Hi all, MP None Vul. Q985 J93 AJ9 J52 RHO 1st seat opens 1D. LHO bids 1S. Partner bids 2H. RHO bids 2S. Here you play that 2N shows a limit raise of hearts (loosely defined) 3C is natural 3D is undiscussed 3H is just competitive X is undiscussed Do you raise to 3H? or bid 2N? or Pass? or Double? Thanks, Dan

Was this ever Meckwell vs NT?
DJNeill posted a topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi all, Some local players play what they call Meckwell, vs. NT: X = one minor, or some rare freaky types 2C = majors, clubs >= diamonds 2D = majors, diamonds > clubs 2H/S = natural These days Meckwell is X = 1 minor or both majors 2C/D = that and a major 2M = natural from the vast majority of sources I've heard. I am interested to know if Meckwell was originally as these players think, or if it a regional myth or what... Thanks, Dan -
Hi all, Re 1C-(1H)- and the two discussed alternatives to std (X = 4+ spades, 1S = something else; X = something else, 1S = 4+ spades), I have seen Balicki-Zmudzinski extend this to 1C-(1D). 1C-(1D)- X = hearts 1H = spades 1S = both majors (what a negative double would have been). And this allows opener to accept the transfer low with just 3. I have played this style for about a year at the table, including 1C-(X)- XX = diamonds 1D = H 1H = S 1S = NT! 1N = something else. And the ratio between gain by design and gain by sewn confusion among enemy ranks is like 1:20. It just pays to be as close to illegal as possible. Sorry to say. Why do you think Meckwell play upside-down suit preference? It's legal and it's one more ball for the enemy to mentally juggle. Later, Dan

Hi all, If time is no concern, is it better to have a 3/4 Howell for 7.5/8 tables or a ByeStand/Relay? Thanks, Dan

For some reason I found this agonizing...

Hi all, It depends. Sometimes I watch as dummy, but sometimes I go get something to drink. HO HO HO Later, Dan -
Hi H, Start marking people as enemies. Right-click on their name, and put the radio button on 'enemy'. This will mark their name in black, so you can recognize later with whom you'd rather not play. In that same area, you can additionally put a comment about the person ("leaves", "impolite", etc.). Finally, and only if you have time, make sure you log all chat, and if someone ever is completely out of line in comments, simply email abuse at bridgebase dot com (change those words into an email address) with the chat as evidence. It's ok even if you don't have the chat log probably. You will help make BBO a better place for everyone. Thanks, Dan ('djneill')

Hi all, Would the UI have demonstrably suggested support? Other possible reasons to tank are penalty double or a black one-suiter. These may be low probability, but every ruling must address the 'demonstrably suggest' issue explicity. I wish I had a good percentage to go with. Is 80% likely = demonstrably? 95%? Later, Dan

Hi all, Excuse me if this was mentioned before in another post, but it would be good in the tourney description to have automatically the time alotted per board displayed. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, At 1:00 pm EST (19:00 CET) Saturday May 8 will be a Cool Systems tournament. The last one didn't get off the ground. Systems disallowed: sayc, 2/1, acol (unless it is so modified as to make it unrecognizable). Highlight: G will be in the house. Please sign up early (you may find you are not on my custom list). It is posted. Later, Dan

Hi Uday, Yes, that did it. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, I am going to host "Cool Systems" tournaments, hopefully once each weekend. The only allowed systems are those from my webpage To be included in the custom list allowed in the tournaments, chat/email me (daniel_neill_2000 at yahoo dot com) with the name(s) and the system(s) played. You can use another system, as long as it is in the same vein as the systems on my webpage. It should be complex, unusual, or highly aggressive. All countries welcome. Thanks, Dan (djneill)

Hi all, In a conditions of contest text to .lin converter, an open parentheses is deleted. So, "(your text here)" becomes "your text here)" Also, when displaying the @ symbol, a character immediately following appears as a space. So in the .lin, if it is written as "@domain.com" it comes out as "@ omain.com". I tried different letters following it. And the prefix/suffix to make a hyperlink adds http://. There should be a way to allow mailto: as well. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, If you play a 12-14 NT 5-card major natural system, you open a minor with 15-17 balanced. Say you have no special opening (Mexican, or using a specific minor as default) for 18-19 balanced, so that must be tucked in with the natural minor opening. In answering these questions, you may play any treatment you want, and add comments about MP/IMP or vul, if necessary. As South, on the auction: South West North East 1C 1D 1S 2D ? what would you rebid on these hands? (S-H-D-C order) a) Axx Kxxx x KJTxx b) AQx KQx xxx AQxx c) Axxx Qxx xx AKQx d) Kxx Jxx AKJ Axxx e) Qx Axx KQxx AJxx f) x AQJ xxx KQJxxx g) Axx KQJ KJx ATxx h) Ax KQJx KJx ATxx i) x QJxx AKx KQJxx j) x AQx Kx AQJxxxx k) x AKQ Kx AQJxxx l) xxx Axxx KQx AQx Thanks, Dan

Hi all, TD's are volunteers, so the fact that there is a tournament at all is a blessing for players. What right to players have to be rude to a TD? "I deserve this and that in my tournaments. Hrumph!" Yeah and how much do you pay for these tournaments again? There is room for opinion, but after the tournament when the TD is in a receptive mood. Later, Dan

Hi, Each line appears the same way. ♣square♥♠ square♦squaresquare ♣square♥♠ squaresquaresquaresquare The shapes appear fine: the shapes are filled in except for the diamond which is clear in the middle. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, I have MIE 6.0 SP1, and I can see all symbols in posts to the Forum except the diamond, which appears as a rectangle with orange sides and clear middle. I can see it fine in this little post-writing menu (which inserts a ♦). Just not in posts themselves. For any help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Dan

Version 3.5.4 available for testing
DJNeill replied to uday's topic in BBO Announcements and Special Events
Hi all, On the hand annotation, I found that I can annotate every trick except after the last card has been played. That annotation doesn't play back. Also, when I play an annotated hand as a movie (not in the annotation facility), an annotation is displayed throughout all subsequent unannotated tricks, until it is replaced by the next annotation. There is a workaround by entering a blank annotation if no display is desired, I guess. Thanks, Dan -
Hi all, Is there a way to view the latest posts on one page with full message bodies displayed sequentially, even if the posts are in different areas and on different threads? I used to do this in the previous Forum software, by clicking the "most recent 10 posts" For any info anyone can give, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Dan

Bug -- Kibb a team and sucked in to a tourney
DJNeill replied to Jangvik's topic in Suggestions for the Software
Hi, About the repeating opponents/partners: Often you will have same player at your table if the tourney is somewhat small. Also if the tourney is not clocked, because then you will get into a group of similarly-speed players. If you get stuck into a very slow group, or very fast group, you will definitely see them often, even partner them multiple times. Dan -
Hi all, Does anyone have the movies of the match they could email me, or post somewhere? Thanks, Dan
