  1. This is a classic error beginners and many intermediates do and maybe some advanced folks too :P I am trying to convince my just-learned-bridge-friend to plan the play - it ain't easy! ADDED: Just posted this - and as I was kibitzing a friend - the hand just came up! What a coincidence! They found 6♠ though :( ( your partner was mrdodgy! )
  2. I have a feeling this has been discussed before. That some prefer 1♣-1♦-P-1♥ is 4+ and 1♣/♦-1♥-P-1♠ should be 5+. I think W bid just fine. Not so sure about the E 4♥-bid. However, as Mike said, I also like the 2♣ constructive diamond raise. Advancer got room to search for a potential 3NT, but I he knows you probably belong in a diamond contract.
  3. I like this structure. I have a feeling it is also (gaining) popular(-ity) among certain circles in Norway. Do you have a good write-up with example hands on this - or a link? Does it have a name?
  4. For me this sequence is also the same as 1NT-(X)-2D. Thus, we have a "runaway"-system -> something interesting.
  5. I would open 1♥, however 5♥ is tempting - 11 tricks, denying AK in hearts asking partner to bid one level up for each of them. I'd say this is better than opening 6♥, but I am also lying with actual hand. Switch clubs and diamonds in responder's hand - and any pre-empt is really destructive. But - then again - I don't know...
  6. I disagree, 3♦ should show 6-4. South's third bid is a matter of style, either 2♥ or 2♠. 2♠ should show 3 card support here, no? But as long as responder only has shown 4, I would not show my AJ support just yet. What should 2♥ mean? Is it GF? As opener failed to take a stronger action on his second bid, is this only a strong-showing bid asking for stopper or should responder show 5 card spades? I would also bid 2♥ as maximum, forcing partner to describe his hand. I would support responder to 3♠ if he rebids 2♠, and probably pass 3♣/♦ - happily knowing I have shown a strong 5-4 hand. A side question: is 2NT from responder "lebensohl" forcing a 3♣ rebid?
  7. I bid out of turn in my last tourney too - I had to make myself a routine of always saying who the declarer was. However, this was more due to little sleep and - uhm - yeah - you know :) ( see avatar ). I learned to play bridge online a few years ago. I found it hard to getting used to bidding boxes and actually holding cards. Now it's the opposite. I am much more concentrated holding real cards. I would suggest people get out of their favorite seat, away from the computer, and enjoy themselves socially at the club rather than only online. :) This is actually a problem where I live - a lot of good players don't bother coming to the club. They get their "fix" elsewhere.
  8. Maybe not a big deal, but this happened yesterday playing defence. Dummy had 10xxx. Me sitting before dummy, held Axx. Declarer had KQx, or that was what I played her for. A hard 3NT which required 3 tricks in the suit. I ducked first card, declarer winning the K, second time, declarer played a new card towards hand putting up the Q - I jumped up and returned a spade. It so happened that partner had Jxx and the setting tricks :) I know declarer can make a bathcoup ducking the K with KQ and AJ in hand or either in dummy. But what about the defence? Reversed Bath coup? Just a thought.... ps: i know, irrelevant, wrong forum etc...
  9. The bidding went: 2♣-2♦-4NT-5♣!-5NT!!-6♣-ap Am I entitled to blame partner for his 5♣? or even the 6♣? He held: 10xxx xxx Qxx xxx My hand: AKx AKx AKx AK10x - the 10 is new Our structure with multi is this: ( 2NT minors ) 2♣-2♦-2NT 20-21(22) 2♦-2♥-2NT 22-23(24) 2♣-2♦-3NT 24-25(26) 2♦-2♥-3NT 26-27(28) 2♣-2♦-4NT 28-29 i guess... Thus - I do blame myself a bit here... with the 5 LTC.
  10. AKx AKx AKx AKxx I actually had this hand today - 28hp, 5 LTC, now what... how do you evaluate such a flat hand? I opened 2♣-2♦- now what? I have some trouble de-evaluate balanced hands. Yesterday at the club, partner opened 1♠ with a bare minimum (AKQJ xxx xxx Jxx), I held 22hp with same distro... I had no chance to stop... Only a couple using 8-12hp NT managed to stop in 4♠. The rest was in 6 or 7 with 11 - a ruff and K offside... These balanced killer hands have given me some trouble lately.... Any tips?
  11. 2♦ is also my choice. 1♥-1♠-2♦-2♥ followed by 3♠ does not really exist in my world. This because 3♠ would be splinter with hearts. But as long as 2♦ is non-forcing, the 3♠ bid can not exist because it would force to game (4♥). Also, as long as responder only promise 4 spades, I would not jump with 3 card support. So - I'd bid 2♠ if responder had corrected to 2♥, happily knowing I have described my hand perfectly. I am not sure if SA(YC) allows jump-shift with 4, but I like it to be 5-5 and GF. You do not have GF values, so... 3♦ would be wrong. But - then again - I don't know
  12. If you have some bid showing the majors, and partner actually got a limit-raise or better, what do you do? 2nt invit+ with a major? If so - any structure? And if you tend to get in with light values - your response structure should show this right? Any thoughts?
  13. Unfortunately it was :( 7,4% - shared bottom http://online.bridgebase.com/myhands/hands...0350703-1139253
  14. Yes - it is wrong. I take this as a compliment :)
  15. Should one always show support with 4c at first chance, and if possible show sidesuit if 3c support with intention of supporting partner? This is a main question on this one I think... At least this board went the wrong way for me and my partner. I was North, p was south. [hv=d=e&v=e&n=sk8hak8xxdqxxc9xx&w=saxhxdkj9xxcaq10xx&e=sqxxhjxxd10xxck8xx&s=sj109765hq1096daxcj]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding: - W -- N -- E -- S - ----------------------- ----------------P - P 1C - 1H - P - 1S! 2D - P* - 3C - 3H .P - .P. - 4C - ap ! = comments please * = denies 3 card (playing suppX) : added: clearly wrong - suppress this What should have been done on this one? Comments please one bidding and a better approach.
  16. Given the fact that you are sharing this thought-process of yours, I take it as you were not actually considering bidding in the described, intentionally destructive way you outlined with the goal of sabotaging the game!
  17. Why the Q of spades? Looks like he wants a diamond return. Thus, I'd return ♦7 or 9 expecting partner to ruff. He is not likely to loose a natural trumph winner here given he has already shown 6hp - may have a club honnor. So signaling a club return with a small diamond, may be fatale. But heck - I don't know :)
  18. Just a question - what would 1♠-2♣-2♠-3♦ be? You say 1♠-2♦ could have longer clubs. He is obviously making a slam-try with his 3♥ followed by 4♣. But I am not sure if I want to bid 6 of any minor. South non-4♥-cuebid suggests 2 small hearts - so maybe 0256/1255 - void-xx-AKxxx-KQxxxx and slam is not cold, but I don't know. I think I'll pass - srp.
  19. Normally 1m-1H-2S is strong jump shift, GF 5-4 (18)19-21 or so. But is this really recessary? I play 11-19hp and as long as 1S is F1, I see no reason to jump: 1m-1H-1S promising unbalanced hand, limited upto a 2C strong opening. Now, 1m-1H-2S is preserved as a splinter jump GI+ showing and denying certain handtypes, and is no longer a "dual"-type bid which shows either a strong reverse or a splinter - the type which nobody approved :) What is played among experts? I know of several in Norway that uses sjs/splinter dual, but what is streamline?
  20. I do not like 1NT. I rather pass. When partner sees my strong second action, he should understand I have clubs.
  21. As a side note, it has been discussed a conventional meaning for 2NT: http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=17731&hl=
  22. This bidding sequence came up tonight (simple enough): 1NT-2NT* The alert was: bad doubleton He held: xx Ax AJ8xx A10xx Openers responses: 3NT if no slam interest 3C asks - 3D hearts - 3H spades Guess the criteria is slam interest with the minors or looking for 6NT holding 2245 or alike... somebody care to comment? Is this widely used? It should be said that 1NT-2♠ is also used as minor suit investigation - I see some redundancy..
  23. I had to find this thread again today - not to rub it into someone's face, but to get the arguments. I can see that my own perspective have changed the last year - hopefully for the better! Played with an expert today - bidding went 1♦-X-1♠-X! which I meant as penalty. He jumped to 4♥XX-2, and gave me a mouthful. Ah well, maybe he was right - maybe I was right. Anyway, the backlog of threads, and the daily interest of this forum is just superb!
  24. You hold: ♠ K4 ♥ AQJ63 ♦ AK43 ♣ AJ Bidding goes: 2♣ - 2NT - responder has 7-10 balanced. How do you continue? Option 1 - bid naturally 3♥ - 3♠! = slam invite 3c support, not necessarily ♠-cue Option 2 - conventional 3♣ - - 3♦ 5c unknown minor -- 3♥ asks - 3♥ 3-2-4-4 - 3♠ 2-3-4-4 - 3NT 3-3-3-4/3-3-4-3 I think I chose the wrong line - I did not like my option after: 2♣-2NT-3♣-3♠ How do I invite with hearts now? I feel this is one of them situation where one really needs to plan ahead and expect the "worst type of answer" from partner - in respect to rebid-options. Should I bid hearts and rather make a quantitative bid if partner denies heart support? 2♣-2NT-3♥-3NT-4NT Is 4 of a minor cue or natural after 3NT? Need some help here.... when to know which option to choose?
