Good question! I was the one who passed. At the time - it felt right - but I am no expert. Yes - you had a good hand Helene :), but I did not see 3S as forcing, regrettably. I held something like: K xx KQxx KQJxxx and - like I said - I felt rather contempt passing 3S (because I thought it was nf). 2H is obviously forcing, but how can 3S be? I thought 3D were the only forcing bid available... I don't know... I suspect a lot of "jeez - did you pass with that hand" comments now... and "3NT/4S wtp" - and yes - I voted "Monkey!" Added: After reading the answers a second time - I may have to agree that 3S may be best played as forcing. But I am not sure on the "memory problem" - new suit always forcing, is what I have been taught - so when rebidding your own suit, this is at best invitational (in this sequence obv. inv). For non-experts, this simple rule is the first guideline in understanding a forcing sequence - I believe. Thus in the given auction - 3S would be GI (because of the F1 2H bid) and NF (because of the rebid in own suit).

sr - I thought OP was both majors....

I would also say this is neither this nor that. With a pick up partner, I would probably say penalty. In my partnership, the most aggressive bid opener's got, when not pulling his arm (read:when forced :P ) - is PASS. Double tends to show a minimum hand suggesting penalty if partner's gotten some values - asking him to double. However, I am thinking that this position should be penalty - how else do you show interest and values in their suit? Also - I like mike777's quote! (sorry - bad at remembering names)

In this setting: 1M-2M is 8-11hp, and 1H-2D is 0-7hp and 1S-2H 0-7hp. I have been looking at some follow ups after these two sequences, and been thinking about a range asking question. Is this plain stupid? 1H-2D * 2S as range asking - 3C 6-7hp - 3D 4-5hp - 3H 0-3hp 1S-2H 3C - 3D 6-7 - 3H 4-5 - 3S 0-3 2NT from opener is (at the moment) to-play - normally 18-19. Does anyone use this?

1♠-2♥ 2♠-3♠ have only one meaning - slam - slam - slam - slam I am not a big fan the methods myself, but partner did not want to play Toronto all seats, and I am not a big fan of 100% forcing NT - so.... is there any alternatives ( what a stupid question! ) ?
-
The methods itself is really not the point. The poll is primarily to get a feel about how you'd bid this hand - as a normal raise, pre-emptive or invitational raise.
-
I hear you - then I suspect your bid would be 2H which is a transfer to 2S - which shows a single raise.
-
You hold S QJxx H x D Qxx C Txxxx which evaluates to something like 5hcp+3singleton=8points. What is your bid? Do you show your single heart? Why or why not? Do you pre-empt in some way? Edited: the dist was 4-1-3-5 - initially 4-1-4-5 :D

"2/1 Without special agreements" - did not see that. No excuse though - I am glad every time I am wrong - it means that I am still not old and stubborn :)
-
Somewhere I picked up a tip - when opener/partner jumps in his opening suit - he has maximum one looser opposite a singleton. A new suit by responder should then be cue and one should bid 4M rather than 3NT.... I believed him! Sure hope it has gotten some merits.... i'm bidding 4♠
-
Well - this is actually the main reason for this post - to get some answers :) We have an outline of a structure - but we have yet to agree fully on it. The outline says that 1m-2m may also be based on a singelton mayor giving the count of 10+. 1m-2m-2NT to show 13-14hp NT hand. and 3m from responder is now NF. 1m-2m-3m to show 11-12hp any and NF 1m-2m-2suit GF This gives some guidance to what 1m-2NT should be - it may be any 2344/3334 without 4c major 11-12hp. The idea that it may be bid when wanting to protect Kx Qxx in a NT-contract sounds reasonable, thus a 1m-2m may be based on a 10+ NT hand wanting opener to declare. Added: also I like Ken's reasoning - my partner tends to open light - he keeps on pushing the limits - so maybe the 2NT should be 12-13hp NT and 1NT 6-11 bad hp?

First - BBO-flash and tv rules. Second - people are generally honest and tend to do the right thing - as in not cheat. But - and this may have been expressed before in other threads, and Fred may have defended his choice in the software - but maybe one ought to give the TD of a tournament the option of banning anonymous kibitzers who are checking the site out? Just a thought.
-
Neither 2D nor 2NT is GF. 2D is RF - the NF sequences are in the OP.
-
2nt would be to strong for 1nt - the 11hp count in 1NT is mainly the 4333 hand with no good rebid. Thus - 2NT is 11-12hp NT. Sorry that was not clear - will add it to OP.
-
Got into a discussion about this hand - so why not a poll :) You hold K10 Kxx Jxxx KJxx We use 15-17NT, 2 over 1 GF unless rebid partner opens 1♦ promising 4+card suit and 11-19hp (12-14/18-19 nt). We use inverted minor where 1♦-2♦-3♦ and 1♦-2♦-2NT-3♦ is NF, (edited) and 1x - 1NT NF = 6-10 (even 11 with 3334)hp. Your response please - and comments
-
1) What do people play over 2NT for minors 6-11hp - response structure? Need suggestions - link or full structure. 2) What do you play as defence against it? Same as for 1x - (2NT)?

Intermediate pre-emp after 3/4seat
firmit replied to firmit's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)

Partner is dealer and passes. RHO opens 1minor. What is maximum for 2M now? All red /MP :CHO - RHO - YOU - LHO pass - 1[cl] - 2[sp]!- ? I choose a somewhat intermediate-strong route, bidding 2♠ with KQ10xxx AKx xx xx. I did not expect us having game in this position, but of course, 4♠ makes opposite Axxx xx Qxx Kxxx with ♣A infront. The questions that came up: 1) how should 2♠ vs 3♠ be defined 2) what should the direct action in the next seat be (LHO-seat after the pre-empt)? Is 2nt good-bad here? Or direct bid to play? I know Grøtheim-Tundal used to play intermediate-pre-emptive bids in this position in their Viking Club, defined as something like 11-15hp 6c suit.

This is exactly what I have done! I have fully recovered the first session and would like to put this in the archives - I hope this is of interest! Who do I contact?
-
Normally, I use Multi+Muiderberg. A friend suggested this preemptive bid in 3rd seat: 2♦ as both majors or preemptive in spades - or strong nt of course. One of his arguments, was that with a w2 hearts, opps would normally find their potential spadefit anyways. Never tried it, but there have been times were a major oriented preemptive bid would be nice to have ... Any thoughts or comments?

There you go - jeez. I have one "rescue"-plan. Maybe I will be able to restore it. I'll get back to it later.

Had my first bbo-operator experience yesterday - the Norwegian semi-finals. I had one file with all the 40 hands on it. What I did know, was that I was NOT supposed to close the broadcast between sessions. This resulted in some initial confusion when the next session was about to start. But I managed to restart it, missing only one hand which did not get broadcasted to the masses. But the problem is: all the handrecords from the first half is gone. They are not in the archives, and as far as I can tell - they are not on my local computer. Is this because I closed the broadcast between sessions? Are they lost forever?
-
♠ 98xxx ♥ AK9xxx ♦ - ♣ 97 This hand does not fit in anywhere in my system... at least for an opening bid. Let's say it's first or second seat - any type of scoring. What's your call? Are you afraid you're not gonna get into the auction later?

I made a little post - maybe someone find it useful - for linux users. http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=24883

Most linux users probably have figured this out - but maybe some find this tip useful. Scenario I want to view a .lin file with the BBO-client, installed in wine under linux, when I click a link to a .lin file in Firefox. Create a script which is used as a launcher in Firefox - example openlin.sh #!/bin/bash loc="C:\\Bridge Base Online\\NetBridgeVu.exe" par=`winepath -w "$*"` wine "$loc" "$par" exit 0 Be sure to make it executable chmod +x openlin.sh. Next time you click a .lin file in Firefox, Open With - locate openlin.sh - and check "Do this from now on..".
