why was it unsucessful, when he could pass? Here's is a quote from the following respected site-- and you can find similar things in books: http://www.bridgehands.com/Conventions/Two...rcing%20Notrump In the section about forcing no trump When partner opens 1S, the responder has a limited number of options which we respond in this sequence: 1. Pass, with less than a good 5 or 6 point hand 2. Raise opener’s Spade suit, with 3+ in opener’s major 3. Bid a new suit at the 2 level or higher. If responder’s bid is at the 2 level, the 2/1 response is game forcing.

there are many who play that way jillybean OTOH, they will always bid forcing no trump with a void or singleton in partner's suit, and opener has a chance to rebid 2 spades if he feels like playing it opposite a void, the pass guarantees a 7-trump fit many good results playing this way in matchpoints

PASS, ALERTED, AS SHOWING 2 + SPADES AT MOST 1 QUICK TRICK, 2 TRUMPS FORCING NO TRUMP, FOLLOWED BY 2 SAPDES MEANS 1,5 QUICK TRICKS, 2 TRUMP THE WAY FORCING NO TRUMP WAS INVENTED.

Online Bridge Classes
babalu1997 replied to babalu1997's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes there is a cluster of players at BBO who now play it. And one who takes it upon thmselves to study it can easily play 2/1 , Full SA and Eastern Scientific. -
Richard Strickland will be starting two online bridge classes to be held at the Lesson Public Club. Both series and the materials are free and all bbo members are welcome. Richard has been teaching for several decades, but has been teaching online for nearly 13 years. To join the lessons, when logging on to BBO, choose: 1. Click to watch or play bridge 2. Choose public clubs 3. Choose Lesson Club 4. Join the teaching table Or you Can also add his screen name to your friends list and join the lesson table as a kibitzer: richardrls I have taken 3 of his lesson series—dsa, revised ks and granny`s kiss. It is good stuff. Class on DSA: Two hours of fresh material on Disciplined Bridge weekly for at least 30 weeks. Classes will be held each Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM Eastern time (instructor arrives 1/2 hour early to answer questions) with class lasting exactly 1.5 hours. A repeat session is held every Tuesday at Noon Eastern time. The class covers all aspects of bridge, including play of the hand, and it focuses on providing Focus, Discipline, and Patience to your bridge game. The course will include the provision of both a 30 page spreadsheet on the bidding involved and a complete, interactive convention card for use in matchpoint tournaments Class on "Granny's Kiss": Two hours of fresh material on the very best IMP bidding system in the world. Classes will be held each Friday at Noon Central time with a repeat session at 6 PM Eastern that same day. Again, the instructor will arrive half hour early to take questions or abuse. This class will give you a really unbeatable Imp bidding system. Trying to use this system for matchpoints would bring dismal failure by your partnership. Please note: this 30 week course is for partnerships, not individual players. The course will include the provision of a both a 30 page spreadsheet on all the bids used in the system and a complete, interactive convention card for use in imp tournaments

Modern 2/1 book?
babalu1997 replied to vuroth's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
The problem is not the existence of materials, materials exist for anything you would like to play. Books written by experts are never a substitute for building experience. The difficulty is finding a partner who will agree to play adefined system. postmortem the pants of games played online consistently. It is very rare to establish regular partnerships online. People tend to play with a cohort of partners but never really set a time to meet and play. If you could find such a partner, get some books (Marshall miles set, for example), and read it together. -
Modern 2/1 book?
babalu1997 replied to vuroth's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Ken says: Lawrence, to my mind, honors the complexity of the game and acknowledges the limitations of any system You find a lot of stuff along th lines of "here is what I recommend but you will get other opinions". ***** Yes, Mike`s books are written that way, the reason why his book on balancing auctions is so good. But he could have done a better job on contersted auctions. Ken also says? My experience with Hardy is from many years ago with his early books, but I saw it much more as "Here is the system, do it" and then he has hands showing that, with these hands the system works great. Some people like that approach, I am not enthusiastic. **** That is so true. However the main advantage of Hardy is that he introduces shifting hand valuation early, and explains splinters as a shape/declaere play advantage like no one. Ever get a pick up partner screaming because **You had 13 points** and did not open? It likely takes 5 years before start balancing distribution and hcp. Ever read on people`s profiles that they have been learning splinters for the past 5 years or so? Hardy solves their problems in three paragraphs. **** As to Paul Thurston, his book is too formulaic, and it is no wonder there was no second volume. i never learned SAYC, I tried these 2/1 books, but ended up reading kaplan-shienwold from 1958/60. No one has made me understand the game better than them. -
the way i play, in preparation for cooperative doubles, they show 1.5 quick tricks. no shape is promised, even support for partner is possible has worked for me

Public survey about system regulation
babalu1997 replied to csdenmark's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Right Are these same folks worried or even interested in regulating wilkosz and ekrens? BBO is not ACBL . hallelujah. and ACBL IS NOT ALL THERE IS TO BRIDGE !!! I could care less what the WCs play in expert team matches. They ain`t playing against me, and should one chance to appear as my opp with a student, i take the zero and move on. Tho i am glad to take the hundred when the student forgets. And to quote SJ Simon, you cannot deprive a palooka of his birthright, i just bid my hand when I have to. -
does anyone have an online reference for a bidding system for goulash games? thanks

One of the reasons for the success of BBO is the lack of ratings. Those who care about lehmans`s can play at okbridge or get some king of assessment software some talk about here. I am a member at okbridge. I mistakenly played ONE, ONE rated imps game there, and , my imps rating is 49.87, below 50, i became a pariah. Players will play with you as long as they get the rating, the first 30 percent that get they leave the table, taking your rating points along with them. Want to try an even more torturous experience? Try the rating system at the swans site. you get rated against the cards dealt to you, and declarer gets the rating so you make a jacoby transfer and partner gets the rating, your partner forgets the transfer and you end up in silly contract. Do you think people are happy with rating there ? No way, they complain of rating raiders who leave game because of bad cards, or ask for redeals evryt time they do not get an opening hand. Experts can have privacy at bbo. Shut off the chat!!! Make table invisible !!! have team matches by invitations only!!! disallow kibbitzers!!! Just leave the ratings alone. Leave bbo as is. -

Have they issued a warrant for you?
-
i wrote my own somehow i think people should write their own especially since the revised and updated ks versions never had the seal of approval of the original authors another problem i have had with the cards is that they do not travel well-- tried saving them to a usb drive and then found hours of work wasted because i could not upload the new information also it is veyr difficult to change one convention because you have to go from sequence to sequence and some odd sequence may be contaminated by and old convention i would like it if the cards were easier to write, ie, if i could see the sequences in table form or even some kind of flow diagram, like on a spread sheet, instead of those hard to navigate layers.

doesn't it almost seem like the directors are poorly chosen, poorly educated on the matters and their "directing" is hardly ever scrutinized? AMEN -
both a guy and a girl sent you a note?
-
I knew someone who wrote a similar note and the guy never answered. So she asked if he got the note. Yes. What did he think? Nice penmanship...
