What does this double mean?
TylerE replied to smerriman's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I think it is more likely that partner has some hearts here than over, say, a 2nd seat 4[♥. Something like Qxxx isn't out of the question. Maybe even QJxx. -

Why give up a chance at +110 when you can go -500 vs air, right? -

I'd expect him to open 1♦. If partner starts passing opening hands I don't have much sympathy when he complains of trying to catch up later. -

This is a terrible hand to pull with. It's enough that you have a decent chance to set if partner can provide even 1 trick, and it's lightyears away from making 11. -

I don't know what it is. I pass. It's either going to win or it'll teach partner to never try to pull that ***** again. -
Players without conventions on profile
TylerE replied to DrDirt's topic in Suggestions for the Software
If I was going to do that, I'd need about 10x the space allowed in the box. It's pointless. -
Some of us like not automatically going for -200 just because we have a 10 card fit.
-
Yeah, you can't do that. Swiss teams support exactly 2 teams.
-
Team Matches are not tournaments. Anybody can create them.

It doesn't actually alert the meanings it shows on mouseover. I loaded the hand into a teaching table with advanced robots and the auction exactly duplicated.

Preferred Meaning for Jump Shift Response
TylerE replied to awm's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
I'm basically a fan of Soloway style jumps - always a rock, either really good suit, good suit with support, or balanced. Not so much because of the rare hands where you get to bid it, but more for how it limits all your other hands... now 1♦-1♥ caps out at about 16 or so. If 1♦ is limited (E.g. preceision-esque), I like 2-way reverse flannery... 2♥ is normal (<Inv) rev flan, 2♠ is GF rev. flan, and 1♦-1♠-banana-2♥ is exactly invitational. -
What it says and what it means are... not the same thing. GIB does make penalty doubles, and any doubles you make that the CC says are penalty will get pulled to some hopeless spot 99% of the time.
-
GIB does not make or leave in penalty doubles. The sooner you accept this fact, the happier you'll be.
-
If you're concerned about such things, why are you still playing limit raises? Seems most pairs that are concerned about such things have switching to something like a 2♣ forcing, quasi-natural, or a 2NT relay. Immediate jump to 3M wastes a lot of bidding space.
-
I would probably squint a bit and treat is as a strong 5-5 red hand and start with 2NT, because I really really don't care about partners spades. Other than that, I would rather bid 2♦ than X, just because these 5440 hands never play quite as well as they look, and I just know partner is going to go nuts bidding spades. I'd rather be +200 in 2♦ then -200 in 4♠.

Suggest systems that GIB should play Discuss GIB strategies
TylerE replied to Bermy's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
If they could merely get it to play what it CLAIMS to play that would be a huge step up. -
When I've played 4 suit transfers, which is usual, the only sequence I've ever alerted is exactly 1N-2♣-2♦-2NT. I have never had any issue or complaint about this from either opponents or TDs.
-
This sort of thing is just on my last nerve... My pass of 5♦ - X was described as showing exactly "2nd round control in ♦ - King or Singleton". So in what universe is GIB bidding 7!C holding ♦xx? Another $1.25 down the drain. Dunno why I still bother.
-
Pass, because any bid I make CHO GIB will take as swhowing 30+ HCP.

Openers rebid with 7m3M when responder shows the major
TylerE replied to bravejason's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Not standard, but I like a jump to 3N to show this kind of hand. Only if this 7 carder is good though, something like AKJxxxx at a minimum. Basically, with any kind of working fit we have 9 tricks - probably. -
80% N 20% Luck. I'd duplicate S's actions.
-
2 with a little bit of 4. A cuebid might not be normally alertable, but given that 2NT was "Jacoboy" (Insert rant here about the name not being an alert...) From the alert procedures, section 4: "Most cuebids are not Alertable. However, any cuebid which conveys a very unusual or unexpected meaning still requires an Alert." Since world+dog plays 1M-2N-3x as shortness, I would consider 3x being a cuebid to by very unusual AND unexpected. Alternatively, what was the ACTUAL agreement for 2N? I suspect it something like "strong forcing raise"m in which case alerting it as Jacoby is flat out wrong. So EW have catch-22'd there way into an MI ruling.

1 NT strength with 5551
TylerE replied to ttti's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Play anything but 5551. You are completely ruining your 1♣ auctions (which even promising 3 are on shaky ground to start with) so you occasionally show 5♦ you don't even want to play in. -
7♣. Partner would have doubled if the ♠ lead was right, right? I expect the S hand was probably something like, say... ♠ - ♥ AKJT ♦ AQJxx ♣ KQJx
