  1. In autshell because it needs the least number of cards from your p to run the suit. In case you dont have the book or it has not occurred to you to look at defence this way
  2. They do it, or play 3/5th ( rules of 10,11,12 ) cos it works best but they also listen to the auction. I suggest you read Goren, better bridge for better players, chapter two. And you will be.
  3. Surly the bidding should go 1c, 1d, 1h, 1s (4th suit) 2s 4s, and now going ven fast arrival a mild try of 5c? 5s pass ass pass but North may just ignore fast arrival and bid 6 why are you all skipping the heart suita.
  4. 6s tina. Cannot answer the other questions as it depends how they bid and who bids it. But the question only arises if pass? Or bid smething other than 6s qhich is exactly why bid 6now.
  5. And fourdad, cos lho will say it shows hearts, now what?
  6. Most likely answer as zelandakh says, east has d fit and is trying to psyche us out. i saw Paul hackett do this years ago with 8 clubs and singles in both majors, he opened 4hts and when x came round he bid 3s then after next x bid his clubs and played ibn 4c x. There is a possibility p has dbld when he should/could have bid 2nts. Bur without a parnership agreement we are all guessing. Hence believe p not opps if in doubt.
  7. Zelandakh, You seem to be insulting phil, y? he is entitled to his view, you say you are an intermediate, 203 hands to your name, if true hardly grounds fo laying the la down, how would you feel if Phil wrote to you like that? Will we meet at the camrose? Let me know, should be fun.
  8. Three spades half a heart stop, no more than three of minor bid and not enough to bid other minor at two level ? More likely p has forgotten the system. Not 4 spades p could bid them.
  9. So to summarise then we have UCBs, asking cue bids, michaels cue bids and strong T/o double cue bids and goodness knows what else but cue bid n its own means a bid in a new suit after suit agreement, implyng suit agreement So a "a cue bid" unqualified is contorl showing first or second round control but to be clear we should always add the qualifirer eg control showing cue bid, however most people put cue bid on their card meanng control showing
  10. Ty cyber pls show us you source of stats please and computer analysis showing it is better.Or are you making a personal judgement.
  11. Also some people would open a club which has its merits with 17 as opposed to say a bigger hand with 19 when 2nt might be more popular. Maybe it depends on whether you are winnng and or vul.
  12. Difficult no point bidding spades p does not have four, 2 hts would ask for a stop but 3nt likely to be very risky, 3c seems safe but again asks for a stop , and shows 5 diamonds.if p bids 3nt over 3c 5d with only four losers, pass if p bids 3d. As acol does not handle 4441 very well some experts are startng to open 2nt on this sort of hand which can work well showing the righr sort of points and is good for finding the 44 fit in one suit esp a minor.
  13. 204 is on the rrecord, by the way in the sequence unopposed 1h 3h 4d what is 4d?
  14. Well not in English (uk) but thanks two nations separated by a common language and not in Acol but who knows does the definition change when it is not an overcall? Certainly it was called a Michaels cue bid but the word Michaels said not control showing but distribution showing hence cue bid needed the word Michaels. tHis auction is quite different. U go your way, mine seems to work quite well
  15. So 3hts is slow approach asking for info as stated not showing a control, and 4hts would be a control bid but not a cue bid so what is a cue bid? Is Michaels a cue bid?
  16. Hi Zeland, 204 hands I think I might help your play if you wish
  17. By cue bid I understand control showing, what do you mean by definition it is a cue bid,. It is an exploratlory bid cos 4hts would be a cue bid. If , say the nxt bid is 4s that would say no slam interest. If the next bid is 4c that would be a cue bid or a suit depending on style, if the next bid was 4d the same. Again slow arrival shows strength. I assme you have a different definition of a cue bid otherwise I disagree. Is a michaels bid a cue bid? Is an old fashioned acol of the same ilk a cue bid?
  18. It is a GF and asking for more info. It is slow arrival and suggests a slam interest, it is not neccessarily a cue bid at this stage. 4h would be a cue bid but p probably wants to know about minos suits and controls or indeed a heart control so bidding a minor would show a control now.
  19. Alok no it wont how is p going t show a four card major, sry wrong wrong.
  20. And if it goes 2d on your left p p you can x agan to force p t bid r cnvert to a penalt x by passing with 5diamnds
  21. You are too strong tot double and being strong you do not need to take up room. The double shows a good hand opening strength plus and either two or three suits. If p bids a suit you have you can raise, use the Ltc for level but see later. If only two suits and p bids the ne you have not got you bid lower f the two you have interms of level first and rank second. Many people play x of a major guarantees the other one. If opps do not bid and p bids at the lowest possible level it shows nothing or virtually nothing so with 8+ p jumps a level or bids at lowest lvel over opps if they bid this shows 8 ish plus length as always counts for points on the ltc basis. Zar points are ideal in this situation. Your instinct to overcall is completely wrong, ovecalls are weak/ defensive/ suggest cmpetition or sacrifice or lead direction X the bidding nts shows a big hand with the ops suit 18? As p can be weak and have few or no entries so beware but it is stronger tha a nt ovecall.
  22. What will get the msg across best? Maybe 4d bur if i dont know p 6c only 4loers assumong p playing acol and club s four cad suit ,if not blame the system.
  23. Already sent this but my txtts vanish. Seems simple pass then x not alternatives
  24. On what hand! seems silly bid with room to explore. I play after a normal raise in a minor 1 to 2/3 bid if another suit asks for a stop with it bid nts.3nt shows flat hand 19pts, less with solid clubs of 6/7 I suppose. May be a bit of a gamble with a hand too strong for an opening 3nt (solid minor no more than a kng outside
