  1. What's happen if we lose a trick in heart ?
  2. My question was if better choising between Vienna coup and Vienna coup for excellence had been discussed in any book ( and under which conditions ) for a better result.
  3. Sorry, has just showed 7 points then may have Queen yet.
  4. In the hands of West and East are 23 points remaining 17 : with opponents silent we may coinsider that points are divided 8 - 9 or 7 - 10 and North has just showed 10 points then the Lady is in South.

(s) Q (h) Q J (d) - © A Since a squeeze is the only hope, a momentary thought might be to duck the second trick, in hope of setting up a simple squeeze on West. But a Spade or Heart discard leaves no threat in that suit, and a third Club lead will excise the Club threat. No simple squeeze. The best chance is that West ma hold all the invisible high cards [like is for triple squeeze :when you have three honors -high cards - let's think about it]. If so, the triple squeeze is established right now, and an easier one could hardly be conceived. Just run all the trumps, and West will buckle. The original hand have menace in Spade and Heart type A x/K 10 x and was Case I: One threat opposite the squeeze card. 6. The situation of the spades of West 9 7 3 is equivalent at J 7 3 with West discarding spade 3.
  7. Squeeze ending of compound guard squeeze : North (sp) 9 7(idle card) (he) A 7 (di) - (cl) J ; South (sp) - (he) K 9 4 (di) 4(next to last free winner) 3 (last free winner) (cl) - ; West (sp) Q (he) Q J (di) - (cl) ?Q x(idle card) ; East (sp) A (he) 10 x x (di) - (cl) ?Q . When South leads diamond 4 West discards idle card and East if discards heart make good 9 in South after A and K then East if discards spade takes 9 in favoureble position controlled by West , club J double treath without comucation , twin entry menace in heart : when South leads diamond 3 starts a double guard squeeze ; if East discards club takes club J in favoureble position controlled by West , spade 9 double treath without comucation , twin entry menace in heart : when South leads diamond 3 starts a double guard squeeze. [ In parenthesis (sp)=spade (and so on..) ].
  8. Obviously the heart are 2-3 and not diamond (trump) with such as Q J in W and 10 in E.
  9. The 9 of spade is both controlled, the diamond could be 2-3 and club J is in inderminate position so i think to a compound guard squeeze (run diamond for almost two or three rounds, club A and K pitching heart, ruff spade then diamond until 4 [next-to-last free winner]).(Lovera)
  10. It seems that a clarification is required: how i have said on my post n.13 i have choise line 1) trying to solve the contract with an automatic single squeeze heart/spade ; the consideration on opening lead take me thinking that King of spade were in South and then to play for 4-3-2-4 with Q 10 x in heart and A x in diamond . On this absumption i lose then 2 clubs ,1 diamond (if Ace when lead into 3th round for return in other color) and 1 spade. The squeeze position (being automatic ) althougt is with the same cards in North. The consideration about Vienna coup are on tecnique of squeeze and its use . Let' think that if in diamond we have A85 and Ace when played on third round returning heart we can squeeze North only on positional ending of 4 cards (that orients as lie cards ) because we cannot play Ace of spade not having a comunacation for West to play last club as squeeze card. Squeeze ending (with 4 cards) : in West 8 7 in spade, J in heart and last club as sq. card in East A Q or also A 6 in spade , K 9 in heart against K J in spade and Q 10 in heart in North.( I am disponible for ulterior explanation) , bye .
  11. But, looking better, the heart attack is not a problem: infact we need to return in West's hand after to have cashed spade Ace (Vienna coup ) to avoid blockage squeezing South hand (that is not necessary if North) being spade 8 equivalent to Queen against spade 4 - 2. If diamond Ace get off early we may return in West either diamond or, if necessary , in heart (little to Ace). Squeeze ending : W © sq. card (d) - (h) (A) J (s) 8 N (not influent) E (s) - (h) K 9 5 (3) S © - (d) - (h) Q 10 x (s) K.
  12. I think to play and unblocking clubs : in this case we loose 2 club, 1 diamonds and 1 spade, stopping every returns to get at 10th trick to squeeze South in S - H for a simple with a twin entry menace (i'm non sure this is against and defence [herts]). I choise line 1).
  13. The situation in spade must be thinked like a duble threat (with honors divided between opp like Q in E and J in W) . So standing thinps we have two double threats and one oriented favoureble (in the upper hand ) in diamond . Then in clubs we have an threat called alternate ( club 3 in N and club 5 in S) : this is infact a compound squeeze with alternate threat.(Lovera)
  14. 79."Elementary squeeze played as a compound squeeze". In elementary squeeze[simple] play it may happen that only a simple squeeze is present, but with no way to tell whether East or West is to be pulverized. The, granted proper conditions, Declarer solve the problem "by playing the hand as a double squeeze (prgr 24). Needless to say, a similar situation may arise at our present level, and in fact is very common. That is : your holdings in one of the ambigous suits - perhaps in both of those suits - is such that only one defender can stop the suit, but with no way to locate the stopper. Then, granted the requisite conditions, you merely "play the hand as a compound squeeze". The difficult part of compound squeeze play lies in weighing the evidence when the crux is reached. Here,West's discard mean little, because help might easily have held two Spades and five Hearts. The deciding factor is East's discard, T6. If West can still stop Hearts, then East has thrown a Heart from a holding of five Spades and three Hearts, which sounds unlikely. So Declarer cash the Hearts, return in Clubs and leads the Diamond.(From Love text pagg. 197 and 198).
  15. We already seen is this: N (s) A Q (h) 9 (d) - © - S (s) 2 (h) - (d) 8 © 7 W (s) ?? (h) J (d) - © - E (s) ?? (h) - (d) J © - [where is this the King?] The c 7 squeeze simultaneasly both opp (balanced scheme) forcing them to discard a spade. After we play the Ace without impassing (the other position is with three cards in the same way with A 2/K J 3 against ???). Romanet call this position ("to whom don't like to risk all on an impasse" compressione per cardiopatici - squeeze for cardiopatics that i have defined once freely translating heartache squeeze [click on my nickname "Lovera" then on my profile click on "Find my content " then choise "Nice grand .." to have an example of hand].
  16. THE ALTERNATIVE COMPRESSIONS. When you have a single affrancable suit and is expected to then double squeeze , sometimes it happens that none of the three remaining colors to be able to provide a double threat, either by excess assets: AKQx / xx or AKxx / Qx want because the threat is of value too high to be able to act on both opponents: AQ / x or AKJ / xx or AJx/ Kx. We have already seen that in this second case, however, should consider the bottom card of the fork as if it were a double threat to preference uncertainty of the impasse. The same technique can also be used in the first case, looking for a pattern resembling one of double squeeze (...) The probability of success of these compressions alternatives are significant in each case significantly higher than those of a simple impasse, to which, therefore should be preferred.(From "Le squeeze au Bridge" by Bertrand Romanet Chapter VI Variation on theme of double squeeze pagg. 234 and 236). Thank you, bye.
  17. So as suits diamonds and hearts are only an opp may have the controll (4-3 shape). Romanet call this type of squeeze "alternative" (moving like double squeeze but instead of double threat we have a threat controlled an opp ) We have on this stage two alternative threats. The squeezes possibilities are H-D, H-C, D-C if we squeeze West but only the first and the second if let's squeeze East.
  18. Classical aspects are like evergreen. Samuel Stayman is the author of 1 NT Stayman very usefull and known convention like 4 NT by Easley Blackwood : both these ones have had in time many variants. The architetture of the system is based on natural bidding with highly compatibility for inserting of convenctions to define better bidding (as you like). Infact, for information about force for slam i have used 4 clubs Avarelli (Walter Avarelli component of the Italian Blue Team) whilest the system uses 4 clubs Gerber and also Asking Bid by Ely Culbertson (in the system cue bids).Already at the time the book was published the author suggest to "whom want use Gerber or Blackwood convention to consider how 5th controll of first round the King of the trump agree". Nowaday we'd use RKCB. (I apologize if there is any imprecision in the precedent translate, i hope to be clair the concept however; about bidding a suit compact 5th is equivalent to 6th likeA K Q x x x x x ).
  19. Interesting hand: the choise seems between Vienna coup for excelence (trasfering control diamond thread playing Queen against King in East for a positional squeeze on West or also automatic having diamond 9) or to isolate Queen (playing little for Ace in South). It seems like a two-way impasse: we have all the tricks in the color but we may yet mistake. Certain the conservative behaviour of West could make thinking he had anything to defend ( the King ) and to orient our choise correctly ( i played for line 3 with a little doubt ) . I have tried to find in books ulterior explanation but i have found only tecnical part ( on transfering manouvre ). It may be usefull to know when to get it or when don't get it. Don' t get me wrong.(Lovera)
  20. 8) (s) K 7 (h) A J 5 4 (d) K Q 8 6 3 © A 10 Declare 1 diamond and not1 NT - With distribution 5-4-2-2 there are more advantage for play with trump that could be lose opening 1 NT. The declaration of 2 heart (after any normal reponse) is a rever in contigous suits..Not is any proibition to open 1 NT with a hand 5-4-2-2, but in general color declaration will take you to better resultance (pag. 108 Chapter VII Opening declaration of 1 NT). In your hand there is a doubleton and not is covered a suit then is better to open 1 diamond. To declare NT all suit must be covered otherwise opp develope tricks that you can't stop.
  21. ... When opener must bid after a response force is not specified, you can have a hand that can be classified in terms of strength, in one of the following three categories: 1) minimum [13-16 points]; 2) inviting [17-19 points]; 3) forced to run [20 points or more]. The hand "minimal" is that have the requirements for an opening statement or little more. Its radius is of 13-16 points. The hand "inviting" is that will be able to produce the manche if responder has 9-10 points. A hand "forcing to run" is that having 20 or more points and that needs of 6 points to produce a contract for closure (pages 59 and 60 of the book indicated). In Stayman systeme your hand is valuted 19 points (16 Milton Work + 1Goren + 2 points the 5th card in compact suit ) and needs (in that system) of a jump declaration to show force like 1 H - 3 H. Stayman, Kaplan Sheinwold, Roth Stone are system that use 5th major but i don't know if are difference of bidding, i like (and suggest) Stayman and in that system is so. Bye.
  22. What means is correct because ? I play Stayman and those are the indications: such for 1 NT are requested : an hand balanced among 4-3-3-3 or 4-4-3-2 or 5-3-3-2 (5th only diamond or clubs) otherwise i can't open 1 NT force 16-18;i wonder myself because this system is good and very known (but , honestly, not recent [copyright 1955] The complete Stayman systeme of contract bidding i have the third edition with preface of Mario Franco.
  23. In Stayman system that i play is not possible to open 1 NT with a 5th major; expecially with a suit like this one - compact or half compact - is correct to declare 1 heart for 3 heart is second round. In Stayman system also is not possible declare on two level without having at least 12 points. Then the declaration may be 1H p 1NT (spade not declarable) p 3H p 4C p 5C.
