I agree with david, i dont think passing the opening is very important, im not saying transfers openings are bad, for example it really nice when the opener show his hand and not becoming a declarer in moscito like system, but the price of not being able to pass is nothing you can ignore. FN are great but bocci doubin arent far behind, and you can see they changed their 1c from 100% forcing to not 100% forcing , they now only responde with 3 hcp i think. Personnaly i never liked the forcing openings, and when i thought of system i always tried to avoid them.

In the version of resivised keri given by Ron you transfer to the 5 card first then bid your 4 card at the 3 level. Maybe there have been a change since Ron is given a different answer here. This is what you do with GF. With invite 5+4+ if i understand right, you bid 1nt-2d-2h-2s with 5♠4/5♥ while with 5♥4♠ you should use 1nt-2c-2d-2h. (this isnt writen there but this is how i iterpreted it)

Test your matches play by huge kellsy (hope i got it right, i dont have it with me) It was just after i finished solving 32 bridge master level 5 hands, i was driving home with a freind who is a better player then i, we discussed bridge, we compered books and bridge master problems to real life bridge problems, and i agreed with his claim that those 5 level hands wont come at the table, but i also claimed that most bridge books hands are just the same, and sadly im much better solving problem from books then at the table, he took this book out of his bug and told me it has real life like problems. After reading most i totally agree, and reccomand this for advanced and experts. I really see the different bettween this book and others, to put it in one sentense, the hands in most books are clear, you need to find a line and when you think of it you are 100% sure you got it right, there is usually only one good line, while in real life and in this book, in most hands you arent sure you solved it until you see the solution and the full hand, the information you have isnt 100% clear , you need to make assumptions. Great book (my success ratio solving in this book is not as good as other strong books i read which support my thory that this book has more real life problems)

I bid 3C, id bid 3NT on my next turn. Im the last one who is scared to bid 3nt, but why not show partner my club fit first and that we have alternatives to 3nt.
-
I would open 1S with north hand, but even then not sure we get to the club, after east 2D overcall, if south double we get there but if south instead bid 2h we dont. South 1H is a matter of system, i also play 2nt to be either weak of strong, not intermidiate, a later 3c seems too risky so i would also pass. (It might be this kind of chekening is what distiguege the succesful ones from my kind B) )

Im pretty sure that my line works.

Why is that ? After you won the first trick, you can see you have 4 sure losers: 3 spade losers, 1 club loser, in addition you have probebly 1 heart loser, with some chances to lose 2 hearts, and 1 diamond loser potential, now you can think of plans, the simplest plan would be to finnese the diamond imidiaetly (while you are still in dummy) to get rid of the diamond loser. Anthter plan you should think of is playing the K of club hope they take it , play 2 clubs and discard the diamond Q (or a spade) on the last club. Im not saying those lines rock, especially not the second one, but those are normal lines which have chances to make the contract (as you can see a simple diamond finnese would make 2H for you)
-
Its very hard to judge such a line, you cant magger chances for a faked line, it seems like a good idea that worked very well, there are "honest" lines that have chances to make your contract, i would choose one of them. You should be very pleased with yourself you made 10tricks where others made only 7! I think your line might have succeed vs better players although not as good as here because they made more then 1 mistake. However for future improvent i would suggest you should consntrate more on normal precentage lines.

I usually dont overcall 1♦ with 5 card and 9 hcp but with all those 9s and 8s i think its right to bid 1♦, partner's double is good, passing the 2c is a bad idea, should bid 3D, passing could work sometime when opps are vul at mp to give us 200, but usually it risks too much.

A spade, A club, K diamond, K spade discarding the club, now K club, if east ruff, i overruff, take out the diamonds (J ruff and another) and play A heart and another heart, taking 6 diamonds, 1 club 2 hearts and 2 spades =11 tricks. If east doesnt ruff i am going to end play him in trump , ruffing 1 spade and 2 clubs, and then playing the heart to him.

General Bridge Knowledge
Flame replied to hrothgar's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
standard and common arent the same, for example where i play there is only 1 in 3000 who play 2M to be strong, but i still alert my weak 2 opening while the strong 2M opener will probebly not alert. There is atleast some logic in this, its not a good idea that alerts policy will change all the time and be a subject to trends , instead there is one stadard which rarly change and till it will change an 3rd seat opening should be alert if its not based on that standard, which is what was common in the near past. -
The default as far as i know is a 2 level bid is forcing for one round but a 3 level bid is forcing to game.

How optional is this double?

I agree, yes we share the same philosofy, as long as you are talking about mp only. -

I dont understand how are you going to implememnt the lott here, if think only mean partner should take the double out when he has spade shortness then its not Lott its just normal penalty double, but if partner suppose to know how good is your fit then i dont see how can he know u have 3 diamonds and 4 clubs when you could have 23 of them. and why is partner suppse to know you have 4 spades ? why is it less logical to do this Lott double with 3 spades telling partner to pull out with 2 and leave it with 3 ? I like the concept of Lott but i would call this a penalty double and like other penalty double partner has the right to take them out. I know i might have said exactly what you did, just think its important to call this a penalty double which partner can pull when he think its right according to the lott, and not just a lott double cause partner wont know what that mean. -
The whole point of bidding is to find a fit and then decide how high we should go. Here we have fit in spades. Furthermore, when you bid a suit, you always hope to hear pd's raise. Same to pd. Let's make pd happy and raise him. What is a fit ? (i thought this mean 8 cards)

After reading others i bet im wrong but i would bid 1nt even though my system allow me to bid 2sp with 3 card support. I support with 3 when im unbal or when i think its better partner declear or if i have good resson to think 2sp will be much better then 1nt. Here dont mind declaring with my AQ of club, my spades are weak and diamonds are good which might mean NT would be better then spade, so i bid 1NT.
-
3C like most others, i do think the bidding so far has not done good to my hand, but as it was pretty good 3c in the biggining it turn out to be just good enough for 3c now.
-
No need to blame anyone, bidding 6S doesnt come with insurence, we all knew this could happend some thought the chances are with you some thought they are against you.
-
3c wather we play this forcing or not. (i play forcing)
-
I bet you make more than 3 tricks in spades. But really: who cares how many tricks we take in 1♠? The opponents can make a variety of games and might even be on for slam. I knew you wouldnt stand it ;) This was just a way to show you how much more potential the hand has in club then in spade,(isolating other factors) sure in practice you will only play if you add few hcp to our hands, but the potential different will still be there even if its shrink a little. And yes with some luck you might even take 4 tricks B)
-
I think this is a mistake, im not saying its never right to bid 1s with 4 card when you have 5 card minor(didnt notice it was 6 till after i submited), but this cant be the right hand, the potential of a spade contract in 4-3 fit is very poor, while other contracts in club or nt could be much better. In genenral when i overcall in 4 card suit i want the other suit to contain quick tricks, because i cant count on being able to draw trumps. Imagine partner having this hand Qxx xxxx xxx xxx You will make 8 tricks in club, you will make about 3 tricks in spade
-
I thought this is standard because this is the way i was taught many many years ago. So i guess you just pass with a good 6 card club suit and 8 hcp when partner open and RHO overcall.
-
Thx everyone After a the hand i had a talk with my partner and i agreed with his claim that im trying to be too creative. Oviously i didnt feel good about doubling but i also felt i must do something to show partner i got a good hand, it would be easier for me to pass, and i guess easy is sometimes right.

This is what i had [hv=s=s10h72dq1087ckqj762]133|100|[/hv] Its true that my diamonds are pretty good, but partner can still hold only 3 of them for his 1 diamond opening. The real question is wather my double gurentee spades, or are there other options like a one suiter club suit not strong enough for imidiate 4c or a club diamond hand like i thought i had? (6 clubs and Hxx diamonds seems classic) The hand had a funny ressult, partner passed when we have an easy 6 on any minor. west lead a small heart from Qxx, east had AKJ10xxx took the ace and the K and switched to spade so i claimed 11 tricks and got 9.5 imps because many did 4h on their side.
-
Both of you think i have clubs and diamonds, the different is the spade, so who think Double of 3H must contain 4 cards spade suit ?
