  1. A local club has their club team match league every year, and I somewhat disagree with the setup. The play is once a month, 28 boards per match. 14 boards then a switch of pairs after coffee. The problem I see is that there are 10 pairs and 5 rounds leading to 2 placement rounds. I have not bothered asking how they plan the matches, but if it is random, a pair could for example skip out on playing the top 2-3 teams from last year while other teams are playing more higher placed teams. I do like the long matches, as it provides a much more accurate result in the end, but not playing 4 teams seems a little strange. Thoughts? Oh..and we managed to win our 1st match 107-30 against a decent team who I consider "club rivals"! :) Made some dumb bids/calls, but all around it was a great session for all 4 of us.
  2. 1N-3N* 5/5 Majors, pick a game 5/5 Majors, mild slam interest x/y Minors, lacking major control (could keep us in/out of a good/bad 3NT contract) the only ones I can think of atm that may be helpful I guess...but rare...
  3. Read somewhere awhile ago about a method for 1N-2S...but curious if you all feel it is worth it. The standard in Sweden is to play 3-way transfers...I have never seen a pair playing 4-way transfers. 1N-2S* ---transfer to clubs, sign-off or slam interest ---invite to 3NT ---can include any hand that would normally just jump to 3NT if you have a better use for 1NT-3NT opener should bid 2NT with a MIN, 3C with a MAX 1N-2N* ---transfer to diamonds, any strength 1N-3C ---clubs, missing honors...invite to 3NT 1N-3D ---whatever you wish It seems better than using 3-way transfers...but the gains don't seem all that large really. Worth it? Gains?... 1N-2C 2H-2N/3N(promises spades now) 3D is available now that we can super-accept diamonds (currently 3D the same as 3C for us) 3NT becomes available...if we wish... Losses?... 1N-2C 2H-2N/3N(opponents now know we have a real spades suit) We cannot use puppet stayman...although it is possible to include an option in 1N-2S*-2N*/3C*-3D*(asking for 5cM) Free double of 2S available to opponents if they have a good spade suit...
  4. I'll BW and take my chances in 5♦ if it happens...Partner shouldn't have 4 hearts so we might survive and I really want to try for it... :-/
  5. I was not very active on the forums while the BBF League was running, and mostly hear that it was hard to coordinate matches. However, with interest from others, I would like to put the idea of a weekly BBF (or friends of) match similar to the JEC matches. A set day/time where we can setup a match to play/watch a friendly 4-man match against other forum posters. If we were to do this there are some things to determine... - Day/Time - # of Boards - Setup players in advance...or 1st come, first serve on BBO before match time - If a lot of interest, but not enough for 2 tables...should we have a system to determine who plays? - Anything else I forgot...usually a lot... :) I would be highly interested in this if we can get a match every week. Are you interested? -Don
  6. Play A dimes, AK hearts, back to south with a low dime, Q of hearts, if ruffed I will win with the J(if a club sluff, I win and cash my A of clubs. Play a dime, ruffed and won by opps. Then they are forced to give me 3 spade tricks for...9 tricks?
  7. Too worried thinking about how I will explain to my teammates how we missed the cold 7NT contract to plan the play...please give me a few moments to wipe away my tears. :P Edit: It's MPs...Okay...just let me find my tissues to wipe away my tears then!
  8. I have been interested in learning how to use them, however, with varied articles online, I am a little confused and have some questions for those who play/have played the system. If I choose to play them, I would most likely be using a 15-17 or 14-16 NT range. The main benefits I would like to gain are to have unbalanced suit openings and to show (17)18-19 at the 1 level. My main concern about this is the 1M openings. I mostly play MPs at clubs here in Sweden with the occasional monthly team match. This would mean putting all balanced 5-card suited hands into 1NT or 1♣. I also have a few other questions that I will put below. [1]Does putting all balanced 5 card ♦♥♠ hands into 1C hurt at any scoring? [2]How much does the unbalanced only openings help? [3]If I do put all 5 card balanced hands into 1♣, how do we find them? [4]Should we reply 1M after partner bids 1♦/1♥ with 2-3 and a 12-14, or only 3 card support? [5]If we do remove all balanced hands, what are good uses of the 2NT rebid by opener in common situations? [6]Good uses of 1♣-1♠, 1♣-1NT, and 1♣-2x I know these are a lot of questions...feel free to answer any you wish. I have read articles online, but they mostly add to my confusion... Thanks, Don
  9. With a possible chance of no entry to play hearts in a NT contract and 7 of them to boot...I think you will be back here tomorrow complaining that GIB passed your 3NT instead of bidding 4♥... Edit: Thinking about it again...3NT might be better off with Tx in ♣...(2/1)
  10. Full teams would be rather difficult...it rarely happens for BBF vs. JEC. Allow singles/pairs and this should work fine.
  11. Why didn't I think of that...it appears I took the finesse rather than the squeeze... :(
  12. I reject any idea of zero tolerance on BBO...
  13. I am kinda interested to play next weekend if anyone is interested in parding me.
  14. I "should" be around to play if needed...count me as a last resort.
  15. Hey... :) There are a few ways to go about this... http://www.bridgehands.com/N/New_Minor_Forcing.htm There are some others, but these are probably the most popular. One other thing..The experts forum is mean't to be a place for experts to post and discuss bridge. If you posted here hoping to get experts to reply, this is pointless as they will just as easily reply to this in the Nov/Int or Int/Adv forums.
  16. We have an IMO, fairly accurate and effective handicap(rating) system here in Sweden...
  17. Mr. George...may we have the full hand. :) I have blasted texas on these hands in the past, and the only good results have been when the opponents belong in a making contract or unlikely game. So I am going to go with transfer/pass.
  18. Comedy gold.. I open 1C sitting east with some decently strong hand. Partner(west) replies 1H, followed by north bidding 2H with some 9-11 HCP hand and AQxxx in hearts. Knowing the two players, this is natural. With Kxx in hearts and the opps red vs. our white, I double. After south takes 15 seconds to find a pass card, my partner goes to 3C. This is when North finds the 3H card, followed by my 2nd double. 5 down for -1400. The true comedy begins when north decides to explain to his partner loudly that her passing my double was an absolutely HORRIBLE bid!
  19. ♠Q ♥AKTx ♦AKTxxx ♣AK Let the fun begin!
  20. Played this hand yesterday. I do not remember the exact layout of the hand for the opponents, but I believe it is correct, or very close. The play is MPs at a local social club. My friend who we were playing against enjoyed the ending almost as much as I did! :) http://tinyurl.com/ce7znwl Thought I would share this one as I thought it was interesting. I have recently been losing a lot of my enthusiasm towards bridge, and this hand reminded me why I enjoy the game so much.
  21. You can use the full disclosure provided by BBO to alert bids automatically. If you are only concerned about alerted opening bids/basic reply bids, then this is pretty quick and easy. FD will automatically alert your bids based on what you put in for the meaning. There is a sub-forum below this one a little ways that is designated for it. :)
  22. [hv=pc=n&s=sJ652h6dAQT3cJT53&n=sA9hAKJ32dKJ742cA&d=w&v=0&b=1&a=p1hp1np3dp4dp4sp6dppp&p=]480|400[/hv] Looking at both hands, do you want to be in 6♦? After the 3♦ bid, do you consider 4♦ better than 5♦, or is it an invite? If it is an invite, how do we show a hand interested in slam with ♦s
