sceptic replied to PedroG's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion

ok, I can see why you do not like 4spades, (that is part of the reason I posted this hand) 2NT is (or has been passed by pick up p's before) and 3!h is also not focing to game, I really disliked bidding a minor sit at the 3 level as I personally think that is more misleading in distribution than my 4 spade bid (but I am happy to be slated to death because of my statement,) so feel free to tell me how it should be bid if you were in my position

acbl life monsters and table manners.
sceptic replied to matmat's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Yes, I think most people that state they are a life master, think it gives them the God given right to be obnoxious. This is not aimed at all of them, but it is a noticable amount I find I think that life master means you have spent a fortune playing in ACBL events and I could list at least 6 here that are players of limited ability and absolutely no manners at all, all are some form of life master ranging from wooden, plastic all the way up to the incredibly talented kryptonite life master -
the river Thames in london used to freeze over in the 1850's now it never does, global warming was going on before the car was invented so blaming that is rather futile in my mind, but I am sure there are some well educated saddos out there that are making a fortune out of the doomsday scenario so it will continue to be debated by thinkers rather then doers to answer Gerbens question does it bring more or less bad weather, it depends how you define bad weather, all weather is good to the world, if you don't like rain the answer is no , if you don't like the heat the answer is no, if you don't like the cold the answer is no, but then that brings the issue, you can't please all the people all of the time

I bid this hand and I consider bidding 3 hearts not 3NT 1/. would that be 100% forcing and what would you do, we were playing 2/1 if that makes any difference here is the hand TY [hv=d=w&v=e&n=s85hj54dkq42ck953&w=sha3dj87653caj764&e=sj97642ht962dtct8&s=sakqt3hkq87da9cq2]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South 1♦ Pass Pass Dbl Pass 1NT Pass 2♠ Pass 2NT Pass 3NT Pass Pass Pass

TD SUGGESTION BLOCKING TD BUTTON
sceptic replied to absalon2's topic in Suggestions for the Software
Ben the only reason it is not going to happen is because Fred says so otherwise anything is possible, so it would be interesting to know why? Unfortunately, most people seem unable to grasp that this function is there, I think a minority of people understand ths function and to be honest, I have used it, but it is not great if no subs are available and also it is extremely difficult to explain to people at your table that you are in the process of getting your own sub and this does not stop opps from calling the TD and this one of many reasons that I agree with the poster that you should be able to disconnect the button when you are a playing TD (I have voiced my opinion before on playing TD's so I wont go on about that) another good reason for having a disable button is when two or 3 calll at the same time all you do is reject them anyway, so what is the difference? if no one can call and they have to use the chat at least you can keep better tabs on the people you have missed in the chat window or you could at least message them saying " busy will be with you shortly" I ran possibly the hardest tourney I have ever ran in the whole time I have been on BBO the other moring and I guarentee that I rejected more than 60% of calls to the TD. -
friendliness reputation system
sceptic replied to extrasolid's topic in Suggestions for the Software
going by the title it is hard to say subjectively what it is you want an answer to, some people here are great in the forums yet rude as hell at the table and probably vice versa, despite what they post, a friend or enemy is only how you perceive them, some people like people I find objectionable and some dislike people I find nice, so really you have to define people as you see fit, (the current player notes is a good system in my mind) I doubt Fred could program anything that works for everyone and I would think it a waste of his time to even try. I have been guilty of table hopping usually when I sit and say hi and get no response, I really can't be bothered with people that do not even have manners enough to say hello, so when I sit at a table and then just leave, maybe some one marks me as rude for table hopping, when in reality, I am marking them down as rude for not speaking with the exception of tourney directors that use enemies lists, I think anyone with a huge enemy list should look at their own behaviour and attitude, maybe they are the problem and not the people on thier enemy lists, I can't see how one persons judgement is valid against anyone, there are too many facors to take into account and who are you (this is not aimed at anyone in particular) to judge someone elses behaviour, have you considered that they leave because of your own behaviour. it's a funny old world -
it is 05:57 amd my eyes are bloodshot and squinty at the moment, later in the day they will become clearer and blue

The issue is not about bridge, I think the issue is about your temper. see a Pschcatrist and get some help, relax it is only a game after all

I think it is about time Rain changed to a more Health concious poster ranking system due to the obesity problem in the Western world, though not limited to it.

I to have been victim of this crime, people have been logging on as sceptic and making bad bids, which of course I never do, hope this gets resolved quickly
-
I dont quite understand how this can not be a game try, surely with (for example you bid 3 clubs, then if you have a double fit and hcp to justify the hand, your partner would bid game or if he does not he would bid 3 of the agreed major? unless it is asking for help in that suit in which case it would still be a game try? I am confused by what you are saying here Fred

Questionable use of undo
sceptic replied to sceptic's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
This is what I said, at the table, I felt I wanted to explain to the others at the table why I was leaving "name deleted by me*******, you do not have a 4!H bid, you asked undo because your pard passed and you did not want that passing out, I do not like that sort of thing, it is unethical good bye -
LHO bid 1 heart pass pass (UNDO) quite quickly after pard had passed, which was granted LHO then bid 4 hearts LHO playing SAYC with a pick up pard no discussion do you think this is ethical with a good 7 card heart suit and more than opening HCP [hv=d=e&v=e&n=st832ht2dq7543ca5&w=s9754hjdt92cj8742&e=skjhakq9763dkckq9&s=saq6h854daj86ct63]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - - 4♥ Pass Pass Pass

my comment is only about the place stinking, the rents are up to the individual Landlord, I was just curious about how you could include that part in the statement Rackam was a very bad english Landlord and Laws were brought in to prevent people like that taking advantage and it was something I stated " you do not come across as that type of person"
-
Tears will only add to the flooding and as for the Landlord, Greed springs to mind, I have met many Landlords and most are motivated by what they can get out of the Tenant, there are exceptions to this, me and a few of my friends usually charge slightly lower than market rent (not maximising the true potential of the property). This is a good stratedgy, as in 10 years as a landlord, I have never had a bad tenant ( about 50 tenants in 10 years), nor have I ever had to evict anyone, I believe if you treat the tenants decently you will be ok, also, if I get a gut feeling about someone, I just say no thanks, this policy has served me well. I find I have to question Phil, what exactly do you undersatnd about the Landlord, that leaves a house smelling after a flood? seems rather Rackmanish of you and you do not come across as that type of person.

Hi Deb, I would disagree with this statement, I find a lot of the people that restrict levels are trying to avoid the beginners, it may even be they are trying to improve and to do that you need to play better players. also, most of the expert community here reject a lot, so may be they would answer honestly, why they reject people from playing at thier tables, this may give an insight into the issue. My personall belief is they want a decent game and having an intermediate or over rated advanced or expert is not thier idea of fun I used to get frustrated when I get rejected continuously somedays, but there must be an awful lot of "Sceptic is an idiot do not play with again" on the players notes (I do not always endear myself to my partners or opponents on some days). I am probably in a minority, where I would like ratings to be more accurate and believe that self rating is better than no rating at all, I consider myself good intermediate, I am sure there are people here that consider me bad intermediate, but the one thing is I am not a beginner and I am no expert so where on earth do you draw up a scale between ? No ratings is in my opinion something that is a non starter, I believe that most people are honest, they rate them selves as slightly better than they really are through, pride in their achievemnt as opposed to any malicious intent. Has anyone considered that you are rejected more because of the Flag you have or the system you play, or maybe the inadequate details on your profile and maybe not just your bridge skill level. I know a lot of people on BBO that reject people from certain countries because in general they do not seem to be the most accurate at putting a skill level on thier profile I know I reject people with private and blank profiles and certain comments on thier profiles get them rejected and I do not feel that they deserve an explanation, some people when rejected become quite abusive, I also advertise for advanced opps some days and still noovice, beginner and intermediate try and sit, so I reject a lot. Simple answer here is NO, either lie about your standard, just upgrade to advanced, I find it is the expert status that is the one that causes greater issue, intermediate and advanced is such a wide range and I believe it overlaps anyway when you start to get better at this game I use another ID, when I am fed up being rejected and I open a table and sit at it and wait for it to fill up, which is usually very soon, I have no probs lying about my ability and quite honestly, I do get a much better standard of game and better partners and opps, I even get invited back to play again with these people. Anyone that believes this exasserbates the problem on BBO, well you are entitled to your opinion, I happen to have played on BBO for years and listened to all sorts of arguements and debates about ratings etc and most of it is b*****x, IMHO There are some nice people that reject anyone under advanced, they want to play similar standard of player (and at the end of the day they have every right to do this) I just wish they would type in a table description We should not take it personally The easiest way to keep our feelings in tact is to open our own table and enter our own table desriptions (it is a pity Fred could not save these so the default to our individual table) and reject who we don't want
