  1. Hi What is the best way to work on timing of a hand while playing a contract, all to often I play the right suit at the wrong time ( that is not claiming that the other times I get it right either ). how can I improve this aspect of my game
  2. He was getting old and paunchy, and his hair was falling fast, As he sat in the Legion hall telling stories of the past, Of a war that he had fought in, and the deeds that he had done. In his exploits with his buddies, they were heroes, every one. Tho' sometimes to his neighbours his tales became a joke, All his soldier mates they listened, for they knew where of he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away, And the world's a little poorer - for a soldier died today. He'll not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife, For he lived a very ordinary, quite uneventful life. Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way, And the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today. When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in State While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great. Papers tell of their life story from the time that they were young, But the passing of the soldier goes unnoticed and unsung. Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land A man who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man? Or the ordinary fellow who, in times of war and strife Goes off to serve his country and offers up his life? A politician's stipend and the style in which he lives Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives; while the ordinary soldier who offers up his all, Is paid off with a medal, and perhaps a pension, small. It's so easy to forget them for it was long ago that the "Old Bills" of our country went to battle, but we know It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys, Who won for us the freedom that our country now enjoys. Should you find yourself in danger with your enemies at hand, Would you want a politician, with his ever-shifting stand? Or would you prefer a soldier, who has sworn to defend His home his kin and country, and would fight until the end? He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us, we may need his like again, For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldiers' part Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start. If we cannot do him honour while he's here to hear the praise Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say: "Our country is in mourning - for a soldier died today". [Lawrence Vaincourt]
  3. 1major 3 major ( playing bergen is 0-6hcp) so is preemptive 1 Major 3 clubs (playing bergen is descriptive) so it is a judgement call based on fact for the opener to manage (responder having completed thier task unless forced to bid again I have never seen 1 major 1NT 2 of that major played as a game force bid, with 3 card support and 9-11 hcp if you have a good 10 or 11 hcp then it could be worth an invite or if you have the agreement to only splinter with 4 card support, then you can bid 4 of that major with a judgement call, I just dont see it as automatic I play reverse bergen so I am quite interested in this thread
  4. I could never understand why he is such a poetic genius, he does not make sense to me either
  5. I played to quick never bothered to plan as I saw it was easy to make (my usual story) just shows what a fool you can make of yourself, but I thought others can have a chuckle and it may help someone somewhere
  6. Yours truly played this and screwed up big time, can you spot what I did wrong :) apart from not playing in spades [hv=d=s&v=a&n=saqj6532hj3dkj2c7&w=s87hk4dq8653cqt62&e=sk94hqt9dt97cj954&s=stha87652da4cak83]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - - - 1♥ Pass 1♠ Pass 2♥ Pass 3♠ Pass 3NT Pass Pass Pass D3 DJ D7 D4 C7 C4 CA C2 ST S7 SQ S4 SA S9 C3 S8 S2 SK H2 D5 C5 C8 CT S3 CQ S5 C9 CK DA D6 D2 D9 H5 HK H3 H9 C6 S6 CJ H6 HQ HA H4 HJ H7 D8 SJ HT DT H8 DQ DK [/font]
  7. If you are adventrurous, try Spinich how the Nigerians make it with chilli and alsorts of weird stuff in it (possibly find a recipe in google somewhere), it is pretty spectacular, assuming you like the stuff in the first place. I have woeked with loads of Africans and they are quite generous people when it comes to sharing thier food, and there are some dishes they make that would not be out of place in a top resaraunt. mind you I would avoid elephants testicles, they get stuck in your throat and are very chewy
  8. Personal Finance is what I am talking about, the sharp practices they use are a lot of the problems a small side note, I meant to quote the post above this one (fat finger syndrome)
  9. bids I would like opinions on are 4 hearts (p did not like it, I did) 5 spades ( I think he should show full control of clubs) as the 5 spades seemed odd to me feel free to say what you like [hv=d=e&v=e&n=skj9732hj854dj74c&w=st86h92dqtck87532&e=sq54htd9653cat964&s=sahakq763dak82cqj]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - - Pass 2♣ Pass 2♦ Pass 2♥ Pass 3♥ Pass 3♠ Pass 4♣ Pass 4♦ Pass 4♥ Pass 4♠ Pass 5♠ Pass 6♥ Pass Pass Pass
  10. thats is no recommendation, it is experts on finance that thought up all the schemes, so people with no money can get in debt and borrow more than they can afford(and trying to use the excuse that people are the makers of their own misfortune, is a pretty poor excuse, people are gulliable when it comes to finances) this is not a personal attack on Rob btw
  11. 1 spade opener or 4 spade opener or 3 spade opener after a forcing 1NT bid what is your call [hv=d=n&v=n&n=sakj9765hktdk9c98&w=sqt3hq54da62ca743&e=s842ha9863d87cj65&s=shj72dqjt543ckqt2]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - 1♠ Pass 1NT Pass 4♠ Pass Pass Pass
  12. wow, I knew my wife would come in handy one day
  13. I disagree with that Ron, only because some people treat this game as quite a social thing and the limited exposure to club play indicates to me that pshyches are extremely compilcated to understand I understand your view, but I am not talking about expert level players or even advanced players, to overcome a pshyche you need to be very good and not everyone has the time to learn how to play what is on effect a game nor does everyone have the judgement to overcome them, what at the end of the day is a poker bid I maybe should not have mentioned pshyches as I did not want this to become a discussion about pshyches the point is about two sets of laws and rankins etc
  14. Why do the bridge organisations, not have two sets of rules one set for social bridge, an easy to follow set of rules banning pshyches etc for clubs to follow ( to try and encourage people into the game and maintain the social aspect of the game) Pshyches do piss a lot of people off and one set for serious competitions that the competitive player would require ( they can make the rules as complicated as they like then )(intention here, is to keep the ponts awarded seperate, so to differenciate the different type of player(if that is workable)) I do not believe what I percieve to be a majoriy opinion here that masterpoints and rankings are a bad thing to aspire towards, some people consider them an achievement and are proud of them You could have the exsistng master points schemes and then you could have a secondry ranking system based on the competitive play and only ranked by success in tournaments, even if you did well and stopped competitive playing, you could keep the ranking as it is something you had achieved and would be a decent judgement of your ability(that last statment may seem dumb to some of you, bwtf)
  15. Without evil, there is no good you don't really believe that, do you? Take away all the evil in the world, now what do you have, hapiness? boredom? utopia?(this exsists in your dreams) much of the evil in the world is done in the name of God, Greed, Misunderstanding, Fear and Ignornace and a lot has been done by people believing they are doing this for the good of mankind. Bringing in Global Democracy (evil) I think if people want to live alternative ways, they should be allowed to do it, why on earth do they have to do it under a Democratic umbrella Change has its victims, is the price paid for change not an evil act if it is enforced upon them Lets take an example, no more seven deadly sins * 1.1 Lust (Latin, luxuria) * 1.2 Gluttony (Latin, gula) * 1.3 Greed (Latin, avaritia) * 1.4 Sloth (Latin, acedia) * 1.5 Wrath (Latin, ira) * 1.6 Envy (Latin, invidia) * 1.7 Pride (Latin, superbia) it just aint gonna happpen and no one will ever change it, (I am not saying we should not punish people for certain things, even with the death penalty) all of these seven reasons are what creates (what to normal people is) evil, I am not sure if these seven things are what causes ALL the evil in the world But there can and will never be just good in the world so for this reason actually, yes I do believe that without evil there can be no good. Jimmy explain to me by eradicating evil, there will only be good in the world
  16. ok lets say I agree with you, I still think your poll is in bad taste (at best) Without evil, there is no good
  17. Al, can you use smaller words or words with only two sylables so I can understand what the heck you are talking about
  18. I agree 100% with a post by sceptic in the Water Cooler!! first tme for everything
  19. How do we punish Hitler, Stalin etc or maybe they never got punished as it was God's will, maybe we should punish God
  20. Al if you have ever eaten a McDonalds burger, what punishment can we inflict on you as the consumer is as guity as the perpetrator or have you ever taken drugs and helped in aiding and abetting untold social suffering on a global scale
