so what is the bid?
eagles123 replied to onoway's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1♥ for me 6/5 shape and the intermediate strength both wrong for 2NT -
Sorry all for not replying to this but pleased to say I've found a partner actually a couple of partners through a club i've started playing at. thanks Eagles

North: ♠QJT62 ♥AJ873 ♦ - ♣AK7 South: ♠K5 ♥T9 ♦T6532 ♣QJ83 slightly kamikaze bidding by north but last board of a long session  north open 1♠ east 2♦ south pass west 3 ♦ north 4♥ east pass south 4♠ pass pass pass lead is the K♦ Whats your plan Eagles123

As evil as Thatcher was celebrating her death is wrong.

I think south to blame surely take it slowly rather than blasting to 5♣

Responding to 1NT with Minor Suit and Game Values
eagles123 replied to eagles123's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
the issue with the bid at the 3 level showing shortage is I play 2NT --> 3♣ and then either pass or correct to ♦ so a 3 ♦ bid would be to play. yes i know 4 way trans probably better but I like leaving 2♠ open as an enquiry. It was unlucky to go down, the other hand had AQxxx ♦ so I think leading the Ace is unlikely, any other lead and 9 tricks are easy. Eagles123 -
Responding to 1NT with Minor Suit and Game Values

Ah I like that a lot and nope you would end in 4♥ if u used 3♣ puppet as P had 5 ♥ with the A + J... 4 hearts makes easily. Eagles123 -
Hi all, this is an area I struggle with, bidding over 1NT with game values and a long minor/shortage elsewhere. I play weak nt 12-14 and example hand: ♠J53 ♥KT9 ♦K ♣KQJT86 with these hands i'll tend to just blast to 3N and i'd say most of the time it works but sometimes, like here it was a disaster - they lead a ♦ and p had 3 small ones so we lost the first 6 tricks 5 ♦ and Ace of ♠ I know how to transfer to the minor etc etc but I'm not sure how to bid on after I have done that... or would a 3♣ bid be asking P to show his controls up the line i.e. when he fails to show ♦ control we can look for safer contract? Thanks, Eagles123

Sorry for raising this old topic again but it is an interesting one. I guess it depends how you define a beginner... I'm definitely a beginner in terms of the rest of the forum but then again I got all the questions right apart from the last one which I didn't think enough about  so am I a true beginner? no, I know most basic conventions, play in a low level club etc etc. However, are most of my questions/queries suited to the novice/beginner section due to the level the other forums are at? yes. That's how I see it :) Eagles123

win with K♣ in south low ♥ to the ace ace♣ throw ♦ then play ♠ hope to lose A♠ K♥ and the original ♦ but I know it's never that easy
-
chasing 5♠ i guess you would win A♣ play low ♥ to jack low ♦ to J low ♥ to queen and so on and eventually throw a club in East on A♦ (relying on both kings being the right side and for nice splits) leaving West ♠KT6 ♥2 ♦- ♣65 East ♠ 95432 ♥ - ♦ - ♣ 2 how you then play that for only 2 losers I have no idea but then again i'm probably on completely the wrong track

2 Opening Lead Problems
eagles123 replied to zasanya's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I lead a club on both -
I'm sure this has been mentioned before but my pet peeve is people on BBO that make a bid and alert it simply as the name of the convention when there are players on the table that clearly won't understand what that convention shows.
-
ok thanks
-
my only issue is that if I put every single thing a 2 opening could be i'd be writing an essay e.g. "weak 2 but sometimes 5 card suit sometimes 7 cards mostly 5-9 but sometimes less if vulnerability and position good etc etc etc"
-
would 2♣ not be raise in spades?
-
It was an ACOL tourny.
-
It's an ACOL table so 4 card suits to open and the bidding goes P - P - 1♣ and you are in 4th seat holding: ♠KT ♥AQJ3 ♦AKQJ5 ♣Q9 My first bid is dbl which I presume is kinda standard with this monster hand, please feel free to say if not :) opps pass and P responds 1♠ what next? at the table I took a punt on 2NT which partner raised to 3 which went one down. Thanks Eagles

So I was playing in a BBO tourny tonight and my hand was: ♠6 ♥KQ983 ♦J762 ♣972 I opened 2 hearts and simply alerted as "weak" after the hand one of the opps said I should have said that it could be a 5 card suit as the standard weak 2 was 6 cards. This was only done via PM there was no official complaint or anything like that and it was very polite but just wondering if simply alerting as weak is acceptable or do I need to give more information? Thanks Eagles

I think for both of them slam looks unlikely but maybe a bit more possible on the 2nd than the 1st.
-
Again probably being daft here but is it not total fluke that 3NT turns out to be a good score?
-
Thanks for this very useful.
-
I am probably wrong it's all about learning :) Thought 2♥ there would just be a balance as apposed to actually a pretty decent hand with 15 points.
-
I agree with others that final pass and 3NT are both crazy bids, but I think 2♥ from South is a huge underbid in balancing seat
