to be honest I have to presume something - I can't just ask my P for any explanation there and then? :)
-
thanks for the answers guys, makes perfect sense about wanting the weaker hand to have the trumps... also I'll be sure to make more topic specific thread titles in the future :) Eagles

Yes It was rude but what can you do but put him/her on block and hope you don't come across them again :) thanks for the answer, as I suspected really :)

Sorry for bombarding the forum with questions, but looking to learn so here goes :) I was playing just now and my p held something like AQJxx KX x AKJxx bidding went he opened 1♠ i responded 1NT he then went 4♣ at which point I presumed gerber and responded 4♥... he quickly left at that point and a somewhat heated discussion ensued with me saying 3♣ would've been sufficient I can't remember what my P had exactly as hand was redealt when he left, but it was around that I think so my question is: is 3♣ - invitational - one round forcing - game forcing and was my P's 4♣ bid valid? Thanks Eagles

ok so after my P's opening 2NT bid (20-22) I held ♠KJTxx ♥Jxx ♦Jx ♣ xxx So my questions here are 1 - Would it be better to try some kind of 5 card stayman to try and establish if partner has a 5 card heart suit or should I just transfer to spades and then bid 3NT game choice (which i did) 2 - if we establish that we have both a 5/3 spade fit and a 5/3 heart fit where is it preferable to play? I.e. is it better for my partner to have the length in trumps or for me to have it? (obviously my partner would be declarer on both) 3 - if the answer to the above is better to play in 5/3 spade fit then how do we get there whilst still finding 5/3 heart fit Cheers Eagles

How to bid this strong misfit?
eagles123 replied to silvr bull's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1♥ - natural 1♠ - natural 3♣ - reverse into clubs 3♠ - insist on spades 4♣ - cue bid clubs 4♦ - cue bid diamonds 4♥ - cue bid hearts 6 ♠ lets have a go :) just a pure guess lol would like to see some proper answers :D -
Makes sense now thanks :)

bit in bold - didn't realise that was forcing, thought it was invitational and could be passed with minimum hand and spade preference? As for do I want to be in game, maybe not if 1NT is totally minimum but I do have a very nice hand with both majors and a void so surely most times game is on?
-
ok, so with ♠KQ4 ♥AQJ983 ♦Q3 ♣A6 Do you think 2♥ was enough from me after an opening weak 2♦ or should I have bid something different?
-
Do you open this?
eagles123 replied to Lord Molyb's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
seems a fairly simple 1♥ opening to me -
ok so last night, the bidding went: 2♦ p 2♥ all pass the 2 diamonds bid was weak... is 2 hearts forcing? I always thought any change of suit response after a pre-empt was forcing but my p passed and was backed up by an "advanced" player on the table when I asked her why... in the end worked perfectly as game wasn't on, but I held 18 points so was a bit disappointed at pass from my p and on another day we would have had a bad score just got lucky I think.

After a weak 1NT opening from my p (12-14 points) I held the following hand: ♠KQT2 ♥Q9876 ♦KJ62 ♣ - I wasn't really sure how to bid it to show the 5/4 shape in hearts and spades... if I do start with 2 diamond - 2 heart transfer then consider my next bid: - 2 spades - is this non forcing if my p has 4 spades and 2 hearts and a minimum hand? I certainly don't want to stop below game with my hand - 3 spades - is this a cue bid in spades rather than showing shape? it probably is a very simple answer that 3 spades is the right re-bid and I was otherthinking it lol :) I considered using stayman to start but then what if P shows no 4 card major then what lol :) In the end i just transfered and then bid 4 hearts... which made easily... but I think possibly more through luck than judgement any advice welcomed :)

I know this has probably already been said but for me the problem with the rating system is simple: there just aren't enough options. Especially in the middle range: from BBO Beginner - Someone who has played bridge for less than one year Advanced - Someone who has been consistently successful in clubs or minor tournaments in my opinion to have only one rating option between those two is ludicrous, there's a huge range of abilities between beginner and advanced and they can only be shown in one rating option... my rant over :)

Yes that's what I've been taught - but as my Partner listed himself as "Advanced" I thought maybe he knew something I didn't. Have to say in 10 boards or so I saw very little evidence of his advanced status, but maybe it just all went over my head
-
I know this is a big long shot but I'm a UK based Acol player looking for a regular junior partner. I consider myself to be a beginner but on BBO standards I'm intermediate. Don't play anything too complicated, just a few basic tricks/conventions but looking to improve and learn more Cheers Eagles123

Why would you want to play no transfers?
eagles123 replied to twinkletob's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Oh sure I can play systems off - I don't have a regular system of definitely playing on/off though as I don't have a regular partner. -
Hi guys, A while ago I held this hand: Qxxxx QJxxxx - Jx something like that, I was in 2nd seat Vul vs Non Vul after a pass, I just passed thinking it wasn't particularly suitable for a weak 2 - what If I bid 2 hearts and my P has an intermediate hand with spades? -. After the hand my partner (pick up partner, never played with him/her before) said I should've opened a weak 2 in hearts... What do people recommend for a bid

I never really learnt a system without transfers that's my main problem with people not playing them :D :D -
I always think it'd be quite useful to have a club that really is for absolute beginners, who are just starting to play. Even in the relaxed club and other areas for beginners there is a kind of expected standard, e.g. has a basic idea of a system, not a complete novice to card play etc etc.

always find it totally crazy this and very frustrating! -
6♦ :)

I'd double, or possibly bid 2S. Too strong for 1S IMO

Was torn by 1NT or 2H, but went for 1NT to show a balanced hand.

Ego satisfaction

LOL I voted for Ace Diamonds to show the King as well but now realise how that might not be the best idea.
