How do I upload a LIN file (How to insert a hand diagram)
dboxley replied to jillybean's topic in BBO Support Forum
Here is what my lin file looks like: pn|lenoi,dboxley,marinaelen,madge19|st||md|2S2469TH245TAD3TKC,S3QH8JD2469QC36QA, S7H679QKD57C78TJK,|rh||ah|Board 4|sv|b|mb|p|mb|p|mb|1S|mb|p|mb|1N|mb|2H|mb|p|mb|p|mb|d|mb|p|mb|p|mb|p|pg||pc|SA|pc|S2|pc|S3|pc| S7|pg||pc|SK|pc|S4|pc|SQ|pc|H6|pg||pc|H7|pc|H3|pc|HA|pc|H8|pg||pc|S6|pc|D2|pc|HQ|pc|S5|pg||pc|D7|pc |D8|pc|DK|pc|D6|pg||pc|S9|pc|HJ|pc|HK|pc|S8|pg||pc|D5|pc|DJ|pc|D3|pc|D4|pg||pc|DA|pc|DT|pc|D9|pc|H9|pg||pc| CT|pc|C2|pc|H2|pc|C3|pg||pc|ST|pc|C6|pc|C7|pc|SJ|pg||pc|C4|pc|H4|pc|CQ|pc|C8|pg||pc|H5|pc|DQ|mc|10| This is nothing like your file. I just downloaded the lin file, edited it with notepad and copied it into this post. What am I doing wrong? -
I would never have thought of 1NT but I can see that it is much superior to 2D which partner will normally pass with less than an opener and short diamonds (unless it is forcing which is pretty much unplayable). I still lean toward 2C because there is a possible ruffing value playing in spades.
-
Yes, that would be ideal but if you notice in my post, we didn't have that understanding so that is why it was a problem.
-
As a rule I like to follow Mr. Cohen's advice to raise with support but with your pd's hand I would probably pass. I don't wand to encourage him with this probably worthless hand. I would certainly never bid 1NT.

[hv=pc=n&e=shqj854dkqj743cat]133|100[/hv] Is this hand worth a reverse? This is not a regular partnership and have no agreement about a 3H rebid by opener. Maybe this should be in another forum but I am interested in what the modern expert approach is.
-
I am assuming you mean "correct calls" instead of "winning calls" since the latter implies that you have wires on all the hands. I also assume that your question is rhetorical but I will try to answer it anyway. Actually, when an undiscussed situation arises, that is exactly what you should try to do. That means that you trust your partner to have done the most logical thing. If you do otherwise then you either don't trust your partner (and that is a capital offense) or you don't know what the most logical thing is. In this situation I didn't trust my partner, I thought he/she might have the DK as well as the HA and a club card. I wouldn't have posted the hand had I realized that there would be readers out there who were just waiting to pounce on any phrase that might possibly be questionable.
-
My opinion is that u r correct, but then u may not agree with me...

I think that any time W has the DQ he would automatically duck the second spade to give declarer a guess so it should be automatic to play E for the DQ. I dont think this is a double think situation. He just might take to second spade at BAM to avoid the overtrick. Who knows? It doesn't seem right not to duck in any case, are you sure this is a very good pair?

This has been a very instructive discussion. Now I will fess up. I was south and bid 5S which I now think was a terrible bid. I pictured partner with KQJTxxx? ? ? ? and for some reason thought hearts was the key suit (temporary insanity) so I thought I was asking for a heart control. If I really wanted to make a slam try I should have bid 5C. But the point is I shouldn't want to make a slam try at all, if we miss a slam then I am blameless. I don't like partner's 4S bid but that's no reason tor me to do something ridiculous. Thanks all.
-
Just exactly how do you play a 4S rebid here? I think that is the crux of the matter. As far as responding 2H, how do you forsee the auction proceeding? The one rebid I would not like to hear is 3H. You do realize that if pd has 3 card support you are going to play hearts no matter what the correct contract is. Of course you could always rebid 3NT over 3H (unless you are playing Serious) saying "partner, I know I bid 2H but it was a bad bid". The flip side , of course, is that unless pd has 4 hearts you are going to miss a heart fit, but the only time a 2H response is correct is when partner has exactly 3 hearts AND hearts is the correct strain. I would like to do a simulation...

Of course. You will notice I said 'player', not 'hand'

-
Your partners must be under strict instructions to have very good playing hands to come in W vs R. I personally give my partners a little slack at MP's. But then I don't like playing against your type :)
-
ditto, ditto, ditto
-
Not sure why that would matter. 1NT has several things going for it: avoids rebid problems keeps opps from bidding a major at the one level makes the stronger player declarer :)
-
It's your call after pard overcalls at the 1-level...
dboxley replied to akhare's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
I'm not sure this promises diamond support and since 2D describes my hand I will bid it. -
If 2NT is invitational then 90% N for not just bidding 3NT over 2NT. I personally would have responded 1D but 2NT could work out, especially at matchpoints. If 2NT is forcing then 90% N for not just bidding 3C to set trump, make a slam try, and initiate cue bidding. This is pretty easy when playing up the line so that N knows that S holds at least 4 clubs. (I suppose that 3343 with bad diamonds is a possibility but then S would rebid 3NT).

This has turned into a discussion in semantics, playing professionally and being a bridge professional are obviously two different things. If I misunderstood your post then I apologize.
-
Yes, 1NT denies 4 spades but is that any reason to refuse to describe your hand? The auction thru 3C described opener's hand perfectly (alghough he might have had 4513). Ii never entered my mind that anyone would object to the auction up to that point. (I should have known better :)) We were not playing Lebensohl in that situation so 2NT seemed pretty normal, 3C may have veered the auction away from 3NT and at that point the most likely contracts seemed to be 3NT or 4H. 2NT gave opener a chance to round out his hand which he did. It was at the point where responder was to bid over 3C that the auction became interesting and it was at that point that I wanted the discussion to begin. I should have clarified what I wanted, sorry.

After giving this some thought, I realize that Justin was probably referring to team games where Bob Hamman may not play professionally.
-
Since when does Bob Hamman not play professionally? I remember a hand against him and an obvious client at matchpoints over 25 years ago. I was in a shaky 3C which happened to make, playing with a partner who, like me, was inexperienced. When the hand was over he said in a not very friendly tone "Well, you brought that one in, didn't you?" He then handed me the score slip to sign, he had recorded 3C down one, -50. Of course I pointed out the discrepancy and he corrected it.
