  1. What Zeland said 3S is DSIP Do Something Intelligent Partner It invariably denies 6-6 in the minors or something like Kxx of hearts.
  2. It isn't. It shows a 3 card limit raise.
  3. Thanks all. I thought partner was thinking of doubling or bidding 4S. I chose 5D which was not a success, as partner held: Xxx K 109xx AQJxx Pass leads to +50, double +100, 4S -50 and 5D -300 (as they double you in 5S when partner corrects).
  4. [hv=pc=n&s=skq9853h62dkjt62c&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=1sd2c(8-9+%20Acol%20style)2h2s4hp(...)p]133|200[/hv] 2C was Acol style, game forcing opposite a strong NT. North is fairly new to the game. What does the hesitation suggest? Scoring is matchpoints, and NS are favourable.
  5. Ah yes, in which case I agree with down 1. My previous statement still applies for why I wouldn't rule down 2.
  6. I would rule 9 tricks. And not think anything of it. To make players discard aces like this is just wrong IMO
  7. Alas the textbooks weren't having a good day either. A top spade was the only lead to let it through. I'll post the full hand when I get home.
  8. [hv=pc=n&s=sak73hqdjt54cqt62&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=4hp(You%20decide%20not%20to%20double)6hppp]133|200[/hv] What do you lead? Any reason not to try a top spade?
  9. In theory pass might well be best. But I'm always far more optimistic at the table.
  10. I'll make a strong jump overcall to 4S. And then await the opening lead. Ah well...
  11. [hv=pc=n&s=s873h64dq9ckt9842&w=s95ht8djt852cqj73&n=sakj4haqj2dak6ca6&e=sqt62hk9753d743c5&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=ppp2cp2dp3np4cp4hp5cp6cppp&p=d3dqd2d6c8cjcac5c6h9ckc3ctcqs4h3djdad4]399|300[/hv] At this point in proceedings, declarer (North) asks about the 9 of hearts discard and is told that it doesn't say anything about hearts. Declarer then discards a heart from the dummy on the 3rd diamond, then plays the A and Q of hearts, not covered. After having a think about it, he decides to ruff, draw trumps and take the spade finesse, to go two off. After the hand, East says that he intended to tell his partner that he had the King of hearts with the heart discard. North calls you to the table and tells you that had he known that, he would've taken the ruffing finesse and made the hand. How do you rule here?
  12. This hand may well play better with partner as declarer. Therefore some sort of delayed Texas, if you play that, would be good. E.g. 1NT 2C 2D 4H - Delayed Texas to 4S 4S All pass is better than 1NT 2C 2D 4S
  13. As I understand it, DPs are not appealable. This seems wrong to me. In the event that several impartial witnesses state that a director was wrong about a situation, there surely should be some way to appeal this.

How do you rule? This is match points incidentally.
  15. I'm going to pass this as well. We all know partner isn't really going to sit for 3D. At least 2S isn't doubled (yet).
  16. This might be a long shot.... I've been offered a job teaching chemistry in a school in Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia. Do they play bridge there?
  17. What The Hog said. I can have a fair 13 count for a forcing 1NT
  18. I lead a trump against a grand unless I have a good reason not to. I don't have a good reason here.
  19. This was a problem our opponents faced. They were a pick up partnership. Yes, bidding 3S was a clear error, but that was what happened at the table.
  20. 54 J73 Q6542 753 You're on lead to the following auction. 1NT 2S 3H P P 3S 4S P 6H P 7H P P X all pass. Partner wasn't looking too happy after 6H after he'd balanced but appears happier now. However, he'll soon be miserable if you lead the wrong suit. What'll it be?
  21. J109xxxx X X AQxx Over their 1NT (15-17), you decide to bid 2S at love all. LHO bids 3H passed back to you. Do you call again? If you ask whether the opps play Lebensohl, they will ask you what Lebensohl is.
  22. I wait. If partner wants to double 2S I'm happy. This is a sound opening with good defensive potential.
  23. You might chance a double. But you'll write -790 into your score card often. Depends on how much of a swinger you are. I like to lead and rack up +100. But then I didn't bid 4H in the first place.
  24. 2H then 3H is a good way to say you have 5-5 and at least game forcing values. Once you've established that, you're going to have to guess at some point. Say it goes 1NT 2H 2S 3H 3S then bidding 5D as Exclusion may work well. The problem is you need to know about the A of clubs, K of hearts and KQ of spades - and it isn't too easy to do that.
