I would pass the 2H bid. For one thing, if I bid 2S partner may bid again with a good hand, and I really don't want to encourage him in the slightest. 2H is not doubled. I might worry about what I do if they double 2H.

I seem to remember an example from one of the Menagerie books by Mollo. HH suggested that the only fair way to deal with this problem was to treat the played card as a revoke. But sadly, I don't think this has any basis in the laws

Revolting, Revoltinger, Revoltingest
mr1303 replied to humilities's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
OK, first things first 1) A lot of bile has come from my digestive system, but in order from least worst to most worst: a) North (clearly) cannot bid 4C, as this would show a minimum of two aces more than he has. So on his second turn to call he has no choice other than pass b) Whilst North's hand is clearly not great for defence, partner hasn't suggested he bid here. South's double is pure penalty, and he does at least have two aces. So pass is the call I would make c) Whilst North's initial double isn't exactly perfect, I can understand not wanting to lose the spade suit. So double, if not ideal, isn't terrible. I would bid 2C, but can understand a double d) South's double seems to have very little going for it. You have nothing surprising, trumps are likely to split well, and if the opponents bidding is to be trusted, it suggests partner has a minimum double, and therefore likely to be very short in hearts. You're doubling at most for 1 off, and if you wanted to double for take-out, you should've done it the round before (not that I suggest that South should double the round before - it is a take-out double of 2H, not 3H). So I blame South. Incidentally, the director should rule this back to 3H + however many. -
I think you can only invite game if you don't open a lot of 12 counts. Since that REALLY isn't my style, I pass and hope to make +110...
-
It's my style to put 4S on the table with those North hands. Even at unfavourable. Having said that, South really should bid game.
-
If it is unclear as to which suit is trumps, 4NT is not RKBC. If opener wanted to know key cards for diamonds, he would have to bid 4D here first. That being the case, I think that opener is just showing extra values with no strong fit, i.e. quantitative.

For those who say East should pass with wastage opposite a splinter, how would you bid the following? KQxx Akxxx X Qxx Where 7S is a very good contract.

There have been a number of potentially interesting threads that have been locked down recently because a number of forum posters have lost the ability to be polite and civil towards each other. Unfortunately, it doesn't even seem to be the same people who are doing it. I would REALLY like to see a change in mindset from a lot of people on these forums. If someone calls you an idiot, ignore them, or call them an idiot back via PM. Don't ruin interesting threads for the rest of us.

Finish bidding this

We've seen a number of potentially interesting threads locked down because of two or three posters who can't be polite. I don't want this one to be another one. So if mikeh, kenrexford and csgibson can't be civil on here, can you go and be uncivil elsewhere? -

2/17 in slam, 0/17 in grand, all made 13 tricks

P 1S 2NT (max passed hand, 4 trumps, singleton somewhere) 3C (which singleton) 3H (diamonds) 4NT (RKCB) 5H (2, no Q) 6S Easy game. -
I have a number you can call for someone who organises bridge there, if you're still there. I lived there for 6 weeks and was in the same boat as you.
-
4S is a clear call to me. Yes, it could be wrong, but that seems unlikely
-
Redouble is a terrible call. Partner knows what he has. If 4S X is making, then you're already getting a good score, and you have no defence to 5 of a minor. It's now clear cut that partner has psyched. Bidding 5S is at best "unintelligent".
-
I think double is correct, but 2H is an option. Pass is not an option.

Ax A A AK9876543 Thoughts here? If you open 2C it goes 2S X (scattered values) to you.
-
5H X made at our table, when partner led the Q of spades.

Based on a comment from Lamford in a previous thread. N/S play a complicated strong club system. This is the second set of a two session event. Unfortunately, whilst they had a convention card (each) for the first session, somewhere during the lunch break it went missing. East is the equivalent of the Secretary Bird who calls you to the table and demands that NS play a simple systems card. North says that that is ridiculous, since a) a good 3 or 4 pairs haven't had convention cards in this event, and b) he doesn't know how to play the EBU simple system anyway. How do you rule?
-
Very awkward hand. I didn't feel that happy about my choice of doubling over 2C, so I think I'll pass here.
-
I'm old school. If I bid a suit and then they bid my suit naturally, double says that I actually have that suit. Qxxx doesn't count.

I was South, who opened a precision diamond. I thought partner's 4C cue bid was a slam try agreeing diamonds, so decided to cue my ace of hearts. Partner thought I had hearts, so bid a grand in hearts. This went 5 off, as it appears most of our bidding disasters go 5 off. Who was most to blame?

I bid 4D as leaping Michaels as North, but we didn't get there.

The tale of the missing convention cards
mr1303 replied to mr1303's topic in Appeals and Appeals Committees
In the bar afterwards, North (who is a friend of mine) said he was very surprised at the AC's ruling as well. He regretted even calling the director in hindsight. Given that there's no section for a defense to a strong 2C on the EBU convention card, I fail to see what other evidence could be provided. -
There is the possibility of needing to direct the lead against 4S, which could make a significant difference at pairs. Most other pairs won't have the same auction.

The tale of the missing convention cards
mr1303 replied to mr1303's topic in Appeals and Appeals Committees
Neither the director nor the AC asked whether or not 2S was alerted. This was not brought up at any point in the entire discussion. As I was East, I would've staked my mortgage on partner having got this one right by having either spades or both minors, given how annoyed he got when I got the convention wrong the previous day. Since we've been playing together, this has come up about 8 times. The first 6 times we had it right. I have since moved away causing us to be a less frequent partnership, hence causing the two forgets. I was surprised that the AC made no comment at all about producing the convention card with the strong club defense being on there. Since the TD's ruling was based on a lack of evidence to the contrary, us producing some evidence would be key to this appeal.
