One method I've picked up is : 1C-1D 1H-1S! = GF, may be artificial Now,let's say Opener has 4 cards ♠and he continues with 2S : 2S - ?? ......3S = 4 cards ♠ but ANY other bid denies 4 cards ♠: ......2NT/3C/3D = denies 4 cards ♠ The real utility of this method is when Opener does NOT have 4 cards ♠: 1C - 1D 1H - 1S! 2C - 3C = now Responder can show his real intention of ♣ support at a relatively low-level. If 2S!-jump were the artificial GF, Responder might have to show ♣ support at the 4-level: 1C - 1D 1H - 2S! 3C - 4C

Bluecalm..... I don't understand the above sequence . Give me an example ? [ eg. What if Opener responds a Major to Stayman and Responder only has the other Major, wouldn't Responder also bid 3NT ? ]
-
I have a feeling that the direct 4C! is Gerber and 4D! is Texas .
-
If 3S! shows BOTH minors, I'm sure you have sequences where Responder has only ONE long minor, slammish. The 2006 ACBL bulletin solved that problem in this way: After 2NT - 3S! = relay to 3NT 3NT - ?? then: ........ Pass = to play ( Needed since direct 3N is major 44 ) ........ 4C = slam try in clubs ........ 4D = slam try in diam ........ 4H = h splinter, both minors ........ 4S = s splinter, both minors ........ 4N = invitational to 6N ( both minors , no shortness?? 4/4, 4/5 or 5/4 ) ........ 5N = forcing to 6N, invitational to 7N Thus, p - 2C 2D! ( waiting, but positive ) ..... - 2NT ( 22-24 ) 3S! ..... - 3NT ( forced ) 4S! ( minors, ♠-shortness ) ..... - 4NT ( 6 Ace RKC ) 5S ( 2 + 1Q ) ..... - 7D

As one poster put it, South thought he might need a ♣-ruff ( ... doesn't know about the Jack ) .
-
I don't remember the bidding exactly, but they only made cuebids and no RKC. [ As Justin has said, it is hard to bid a grand w/o RKC ] .

Bocchi ( North ) [hv=pc=n&s=sa987hakqdat98ckq&n=stht6dkq652caj654&d=w&v=n&b=12&a=ppp2np3sp4dp4hp5hp5sp7dppp]266|200[/hv] Shown is their bidding . [ Maybe you can explain it for me. Where did North show the ♣A ? Edit: and the ♦ KQ for that matter ? ] . So, how would us mere mortals bid it ? [ The other table stopped in 6D ... making +1 ] .

Just another slam auction
TWO4BRIDGE replied to sailoranch's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Are we opening all "tens" now ? South looks more like a 3C open, Vul . I don't know how many systems , including Zel's, can get to a 24 combined hcp slam without identifying shortness . -
Am I the only one who agrees with your partner ? ( my post # 14 )

Someone call 911 ....

If Responder only raised to 3♥, then a DBL ( Responsive ) by Advancer would show the MINORS and deny a ♠ fit: p - (2♥) - DBL - (3♥) DBL Why would it be any different here?
-
Unless 2NT is a GF raise.

Cue or Suit ?
TWO4BRIDGE replied to TWO4BRIDGE's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
That 4C interference bid certainly was annoying. The bidding/deal was shown to an expert who said a Steve Robinson panel of experts had a concensus that it was a SUIT : " A similar hand ( was ) in the distrct 6 or mid-atlantic conference magazine (can't remember which). The question was: ' what was the meaning of the first non-jump bid after a gf suit agreement' , and the consensus was it is a slam try with length rather than a cue bid . " -
1S - ( p ) - 2D! - ( p ) 3D - ( 4C ) - 4H = ?? 2D! was 2/1 GF Is 4H a cue-bid or another place to play ?
-
What does 3♥ mean here ? ( after ♦ suit agreement ) ... Or what should it mean? EDIT: I assume it is a NT probe, but later bidding might peg it as a cue.
-
I like the descriptive 4♦! also ( showing GF values with 4h/6d w/shortness in one of the blacks ) CWNN ( Convention With No Name ).... Only 15 hcp but it's a 5 loser hand with a fit afterall .
-
North - South 1C ..... - 1H 1S ( 4s, longer Cl ) ..... - 2D! ( 4th suit GF ) 2NT ( stop in 4th suit, Diam, no 3h ) ..... - 3C 3H ( cue ) ..... - 3S ( cue ) 4C ( Minorwood, since agreement was on the 3-level ) ..... - 4H ( 2nd step = 1/4 ) 4S ( next step = cQ-ask ) ..... - 5D ( cQ + dK, no sK ) 6C
-
Either -- a self-splinter with long, strong ♥ or -- a stop-ask with long, strong ♥.
-
Not sure I'd do it: 1S - 1NT! 2S - 3H 4H - 4NT 5C ( 0/3 ) - 6H ( assuming ♥Q or enough ♥ length ) ........... - 5D ( ♥Q-ask ) 5NT ( ♥Q but no outside K ) - 6H
-
Hey partner...do you like my clubs?
TWO4BRIDGE replied to RunemPard's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
Haven't seen GGG for awhile [ Gnasher's Gameforce Gadget over a 1H Response ] : 1C - 1H 2S! ( GF, could be artificial ) - 2NT! ( asks clarification ) 4C ( 3C would show long ♣, no 4 cds ♠, no 3cds ♥; but 4C sets trumps, asks for cuebids ) - 4D ( cue, not kickback ) 4S ( can't cue shortness in partner's suit, ♥ ) - 5H 6C -
If East rebids 4C ( instead of 3S ) , and I don't think he should deny the 3 card ♠ support, then East has taken control because 4C would be Minorwood -- sooo, he'll never find out about the ♠ Q.
-
If West has 2 cds ♦, they are covered by East's A K . OP said Opener's 3C bid showed 4+ cds ♣. I would require that too .
-
Only East will know of the 9+ card ♣ fit: 1S - 2C ! 3C - 3S ( 3 cards, ♠ now becomes the agreed suit ) 4C ( this is a cue for ♠) - 4NT ( RKC for ♠ ) 5C ( 0/3 ) - 5D ( ♠Q-ask ) 6C ( ♠Q + ♣K; denies ♦ or ♥ K ) - 7C ( chances are if pard has 5 cds ♣, can ruff/set-up ♠ or .......................................................... if 4 cds ♣, then can ruff ♦ or at worst finesse for ♦Q ) all pass

Sensible route to grand
TWO4BRIDGE replied to sailoranch's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Why can't 4NT be RKC AFTER a ♥ ( and/or ♠ ) cue ? Ben in post #4 shows it as such . -
Sensible route to grand
TWO4BRIDGE replied to sailoranch's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
If that is SOUTH ( Responder ) going 4NT ( RKC for ♣ ) , then North ( Opener ) is the Replier and has 2 key cards + ♣Q = 5S reply... not 5C ( 0/3 ) .
