  1. North has game force values . Opener's 3D-jump ( over 1H ) is not GF . 1D - 2C! ( 2/1 GF... not the best ♣ suit by any means, but might deter a ♣ lead ) 2D ( 5+♦) - 2H ( 4 cards ♥) 3D - 3NT
  2. Another system is Bailey Cue-bids which always gets unbid ♠ into the picture and retains 3C as natural : In general: ( 1A ) - 2NT = 2 lowest unbid ( always ) ( 1A ) - 2A = Highest and ONE of the 2 lowest -- Simple Advances are for "pass or correct". -- Advancer "cues" to show a strong unbalanced hand. -- Advancer bids 2NT! to show a strong balanced hand. w/stop(s) in Opener's suit. -- If Advancer bids the "known" suit ( usually Sp), Overcaller bids his "unknown" suit to show a stronger hand. -- If Advancer bids the "unknown" suit, Overcaller cues OR bids 2NT to show agreement and the stronger hand. An example: ( 1D ) - ?? ................ 2NT = 2 lowest unbid, ♥ / ♣ ................ 2D = ♠ and ♥ or ♣
  3. After a limit raise, is a new suit natural or cue-bid for you ? After a constructive ( mixed raise ) , a new suit normally is a long suit game-try -- hence natural. But after a limit raise, a new suit normally is a cue-bid .
  4. Over a weak-2D, Roman-jumps are better. That way the cue-bid ( 3D here ) is a stop-ask just like (2M) - 3M is in Leaping Michaels. So, over ( 2D ): 3H!-jump = ♥/♠ ............................ - 4C ( advance cue for one of the Majors as trump ) 4NT ( 6 Ace RKC ) - 5D ( 1 key ) 6H ( for pass-or-correct ) - pass
  5. Hand 1 Wouldn't 3S-jump be enough? [ no preempt hand over a preempt ]. Forcing to game. This way partner can start cue-bidding if interested.
  6. Hand 3 1 loser hand... must open 2C . Cyber asked: 2S would show a 5+cd suit w/ 2 of top 3 honors. Now Opener can bid 3D: 2C - 2S 3D - 4D 6D
  7. If you use mikeh's system, as put forth again recently, Opener here would definitely have shown at least a 5/5 in the Majors . So, you would have an easy 4H bid . [ His sequence to show 5s/4h would start with a 3C! artificial jump-shift. ] Although 3NT may be the final contract in some of these SJS auctions, it is usually the last place you want to be.
  8. I would never guess my partner held the ♦ A 9 6 4 ..... which means the the DBL was made in front of the 2C hand with K J 10 8 5 3 ( 2 ). Does the Doubler really want a ♦ lead if we win the contract ? Anyway, the Double has succeeded in talking me out of a 2NT rebid, and since I don't think he has a pathetic ♦ holding, I don't relish 2DXX winning for us . Sooo, I think I'd go with a 2H rebid. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Edit: another way of looking at this is that partner's 2D has promised at least an A or K ( or two Q ) . I would never guess the ♦A . The Doubler may only go down 1 redoubled ( 7 Diam tricks and out ) whereas we might have slam.
  9. OK.... let's upgrade Responder with a "useless" ♦K to give him a hand that would jump to 3S over a minimum rebid by Opener: South Q 10 x Q x K x x K 8 x x x I'm really curious what Responder would do over the 3NT! ( showing real ♣ ) with the double-fit .
  10. I 2/1, a 2S raise = 8,9 exact . Responder was going to rebid 2S if Opener showed a minimum rebid . When Opener makes a GF and shows a real ♣ suit, Responder could upgrade with support in both blacks.... but I'm not sure how over 3NT!
  11. How would you handle this one using mikeh's treatment? North A K J 9 x A J 9 x A Q 9 x South Q 10 x Q x x x x K 8 x x x 1S - 1NTF 3C! - 3D! 3NT! - ?? where 3C! = a "multi" GF : - - artificial (either a gf 1-suiter, just a hair under a 2♣opening, or - - real clubs or - - precisely a 4 card heart suit. 3D! = "noise" or "stall" ( essentially asking for more info ) After 3D! , Opener's options are: - - 3♠ (1-suiter), - - 3♥ (precisely 4... because all gf 5 card ♥ would have jumped to 3♥ over 1NT ), - - 3N (4 card clubs) or - - 4♣ (5-5 or better).
  12. @ mikeh : I like it..... including the 3C! multi aspect. [ I know you have mentioned this treatment before... but this time I thoroughly read it ].
  13. 1S - 1NTF! 3C - ?? ......... 3S = minumun response hand, could be as few as 2 card support ......... 4S = 3 card limit raise - - a hand that would have jumped to 3S over 2C/2D rebid
  14. I should say we also play Ogust. That way for 2H - 2S, Opener still has the 4 next Ogust replies as well as the 3S bid to show ♠ H x or x x x .
  15. I think 2S - forcing far outweighs non-forcing ( for all of the reasons given ) .
  16. I can't find anything nice to say about this 2D opening convention with a strong hand.
  17. This SJS GF sequence ( 1M - 1NTF, 3m )shows up at least 4 times a year. Here is one ( 1S - 1NTF, 3C - ? )from January. mikeh mentions " Jeff's Magic Elixir " if 3C! is a multi type hand . My approach, also not standard, is as follows ( post # 7 in the above ) : 1S - 1NTF! 3C - ?? ......... The following 4 bids show ♠ support or not ... and NO interest in ♣: ......... 3D ......... 3H ......... 3S ......... 3NT ......... 4S ......... The next 4 bids would "show" RKC for ♣ w/ 4+support : ......... 4C! = 0 ......... 4D! = 1 ......... 4H! = 2 - ♣ Q .........4NT! = 2 + ♣ Q ... [ Zelandakh showed an "improvement" ( post # 8 ) ] Anyway, Responder would show ONE key card on this hand ( 4D! bid above ), and Opener is in a good position to make an informed decision .
  18. I like above which implies you may have a penalty DBL if the weak-2M is your major. What partner ( West ) has to realize is that the 3C! bid showed ♥. If South had a weak-2S hand he would have passed. Thus, N/S have at least 9 cards in ♥ . That means West now knows you ( East ) have ♠ . So, West has to make some sort of Spade bid: 3S, 4S, or possibly 3H! I think I'd choose 4S.... and East just might make a slam-try . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - What if North had only bid 2H ( p/c ) ... and East DBL - pass to West. Now West does not know if East has ♥ or ♠. In this case West should DBL = have the other Major ( ♠ ) . If East's Major is ♥, he may want to pass or bid NT. If East's Major is ♠ , he has an easier decision .
  19. I had forgotten about the "standard" slam-tries after Stayman.... recently in thread back in February ( reply by phil_20686 ) and again here by another phil(king) post # 9 . So, when Opener shows ♠ ( 3S ) after Stayman, if 4H! is ONLY slam-try, then 4C, or here, 4D would be natural ( 5+, slammish ) and indicate NO ♠ fit -- but have 4 cards ♥ : .. perhaps : 2C - 2D 2NT - 3C 3S - 4D ?? .. 4H! = kickback for ♦ ( can't be 4-4 in the Majors ) .. 4S = ♦ fit, cue-bid ( worried about 2 quick losers in either of the other 2 suits: ♥ or ♣ .. 4NT = no ♦ fit After: 4H! - 4NT ( 1 key ) 6D
  20. Since you, as Responder, are going to "take charge" anyway after belatedly supporting ♥, and ♥ will be the established suit for RKC, your imaginative 2D ( 2/1 GF ) was worth a try .
  21. I can see when Opener has NO 4 card Major that Responder can show a 4M / 5+m as follows : 2NT - 3C ( regular Stayman ) 3D ( no 4 card M ) - 4m - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - But when Opener HAS a 4 card Major : 2NT - 3C 3M - 4m .. does this mean a ) 4oM/5+m or b ) Advance cue agreeing M ??
  22. I you keep doubling, one might confuse you with a Robot . " Once a BOT starts doubling, you can't get it to stop. "
  23. The 2D and then 3S splinter seems obvious. What if your minors were reversed, would the following in your system show a similar hand? with 5+♣, 3♥and stiff ♠ : 1H - 2C! 2D - 3S ?
