  1. An alternative is 2♠ trying to screw up their 3 level vs game judgment.
  2. My understanding is different for the convention with no name. I was told it showed a "weak" 64 and was used primarily to distinguish the auction 1m 1M; 4M as a strong raise to game.
  3. probably depends on if you are playing MP or IMPS. The importance of 1NT in MP overwhelms the need to hold at least 2♠. 2♣ is not an option for me because I bid all minimal opening hands with 4♦ & 5♣ the same as those with 5♦ and 4♣(with approximately equal suit strength). I open 1♦ and rebid 2♣. Consequently in IMPs I would grumpily choose 2♦
  4. 10 tricks is the minimum partner could hold. As Justin has noted the ♥ suit is ugly and we are not going to get sufficient information to resolve it to a point where 7 is odds on. Also I think bidding 6 implies some kind of ♠ control
  5. I prefer 4♣ to 5♣ (only to be considered because the ♦A looks wasted). Nevertheless I would bid 6♣ mainly because I have fairly stringent requirements for 2♣ with a minor suit. Consequently I think partner has 10 tricks and I have 2.
  6. you have some objection to ...4♣ 4♦;4♥...
  7. As I stated in the original post, I was posting this for someone else. I did so because they were unfamiliar with how to make a poll on BBO forums. I don't know what their methods are, or if there is any distinction between 2♦ and 3♦. From what little I was told, I have to assume it was undiscussed. At the point in the poll given, the person in question made a choice of calls that I did not feel was a reasonable choice. I told them I would post the auction, give their hand, and see what bids got what votes and the explanations given for choosing those bids. My choice was 3♣ as well. I will not state what the person in question chose, as I do not wish to bias the poll just yet. There may be a follow-up thread soon. What part of "other" do you not understand? the alternate one?
  8. I've made better overcalls but 2♥ on AJx QJTxx AJx xx is hardly comparable to felinicide. It seems clear to me, even opposite a passed hand. Have you forgotten that we are favorable? The opponents are unlikely to go headhunting at these colors with at most 2 trump honors and 2 aces. And if you don't overcall, good luck pushing them up or finding a nice distributional game (x Kxxx KTxxx xxx, QTx Kxxx x xxxxx). It even has lead-directing and obstructive value. It's not perfect, but I would much rather bid 2♥ than pass here. Overcall 2♥ on ♠AJx ♥QJTxx ♦AJx ♣xx!! GASP!!! Next you will be overcalling 2♥ with ♠K4 ♥JT874 ♦J92 ♣AQ5!!
  9. show a LR cause that's what you got
  10. yeah 4♥ preempts are routinely transfer bids B)
  11. looks like you have to choose between X and 2NT. 2NT is about right on strength but X gets both majors into the picture and you will have to bite the bullet and bid 2♠ over 2♦. You will also have to bite the bullet over 2♥ or 2♠ and raise and you really are just a bit too weak for that. So I will try 2NT
  12. I am a passer too as this looks like the "stop bidding ASAP when you have a misfit"
  13. you shouldn't have to apologize for how you define raises. If available I would have made a constructive raise even with the spade call behind me but I don't have an available call so I have to pass
  14. So then clearly we should go back to spades since partner is more likely 6-5 than 5-6 unless he is Fluffy in which case it's a 100% guess. :) It's tough to resist scratching behind the ears? ;)
  15. Yes 2NT is a wonderful choice. Why would I want to bid something that actually describes my holding (1NT) when I can overbid and simultaneously punish partner for making a probably systemic 3rd seat opening. Now that the rant is off my chest I duck the ♠Q
  16. If I have a bid available that shows a constructive raise I use that otherwise I upgrade to a LR Call
  17. and he doesn't hold xx AQJxxx Ax AJx and make a crappy 2♥ bid
  18. ;) I go even further.... Assuming little discussion I think I can never play 2c after: 1c=1z 1nt=2c you sit down as my partner and have this auction you better get ready to put down the dummy :)
  19. yep 3♣ it is. Get your lead director in for their eventual 5♠
  20. IMO it is better than pass i request to be the opponent of anyone who would bid 2H. If that can't happen, then I request that they note their results over a long period...either actual or on erosion of partnership trust C'mon down!!! :) I use the same handle in all of BBO where given a choice.
  21. your partner only rates to be on lead only vs NT. Consequently which suit would you like to set up for your tricks.
  22. IMO it is better than pass
  23. you bid 6♠ on this one based on the %age of bad hands vs good hands that partner could hold. I think the good outweigh the bad.
  24. Since it is MP a double is also possible so really the choices are X and 2♥ and they are close enough that I don't a problem if partner chose either. I would probably choose X as the most flexible and due to the relative weakness of the ♥ suit.
