Who should bid Spades?
spotlight7 replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Playing a 1S bid after a 1H overcall as 6+HCP and a 4 card suit is a poor bidding idea. Is the 1H over caller really supposed to now bid 1NT with 8HCP and a 2=5=3=3 shape? Would a 1N rebid by the overcaller now even promise a stopper? My style is to overcall at the one level with @8-17 and some very good players use @6-16ish range. Responding as if over caller has an opening bid is an unsound idea when the lower range is really 8HCP or even less. If partner is a Roth Stone trained player, they overcall at the one level on 14+, however, since this 1H overcall has 8HCP(8!) this rules out a super sound overcall style. Winstonm has a playable solution to the bidding on this hand. -
Limited openings in Strong Club with 4 card Major

Both the Orange and Black versions are Blue Team Club bidding. I believe they do not reverse into majors. They also play a revesre type Flannery with 5S and 4H -

We added Roman 2 bids to the Auken methods to clarify the canapé auctions. 2D/H/S show 5 in the suit bid and 4+ clubs@11-15HCP -
Limited openings in Strong Club with 4 card Major

The Hacket brothers from England played a canapé method. I liked how they handled certain hands. 1 non club-2 of a higher suit-2NT* showed a canapé into clubs. If opener was minimum, he could pass a 3C bid by responder. With extra values, opener would keep bidding after ...2N*-3C With bal. hands, they bid 1 non club-2 of a higher suit-3C* showed a 15+ NT hand They opened 1N with 12-14 so opening 1 non club and rebiding NT was 15+ -

You might want to look into Roman Club. 4 card majors and canapé. The system is somewhat outdated, however, some of the bidding ideas are interesting. I like 1red-1M-1NT shows a minimum and 5+ in the major bid. 1red-1M-2M raise is 15-16 and 5+ trumps. Balanced hands of 12-16 open 1C*. Hands with 4Cs and a longer suit(17+) also open 1C* and rebid 2C*. Rare hands with really strong values open 1C and jump shift after 1C*-1D*(much liked a standard 2C* opener and bids the main suit next) 1N is 17-20 ;) -

I played the forcing club "canapé into minors only" system of Sabine Auken. Google BridgeFILES Click in the right upper side on Search bridgeFILES WEB - SITES Their system is the second one down on the right side of the next screen Auken/von Arnim 1C* is 16+ or 17+ if 1NT is 14-16. 10-12 NT 1st and 2nd seats NV 14-16 other seats and when Vul. 4 card majors "canapé into minors" only. 1D is 2+ only if exactly 3=3=2=5 shape. I modified it later to hopefully solve some problem type hands. -
Romex uses a 1NT rebid with 13-16. They jump to 2N with 17-18. Crowhurst style bidding uses a 1N rebid with 12-16. I am not a fan of wide range NT bids or rebids. :( Playing a Precision Style system, I use 14-16 for 1N. 1C*-1D*-1N shows 17-18 balanced. I use a Kokish style 1C*-1D*-1H* that shows either Hs(if a suit is next bid) or 19-20 if 1NT is rebid. The players opening 11-13 range often use a semi forcing 1M-1NT* where opener bids with 14+ or if they have a shapely hand. Meckwell uses 1D-1N as 7+-11 since they open 10s(and some 9s!)

Poor eyesight sometimes leads to silly questions. Sorry. The structure is much better when I read the extended outline. It looks promising. I like the idea that the Power System used that 1C*-1M-2D* showed a 3 card raise and 1C*-1M-2M raise showed 4 trumps

Play or Bidding?

Bidding is 80% of bridge if I remember correctly. A good contract tends to be much easier to [lay than a overbid hand. -
unusual NT to show unspecified major
spotlight7 replied to zzxjoanw's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Various methods to show two suiters exist. 1C-2C* can show two suits of the same color. Colorful cuebids. Likewise 1D-2D* would show the black suits. Top and Bottom cuebids 1C-2C* show Ds and Ss. 1D-2D* is Hs and clubs here. In Europe, 1C-3C* often show two suits. Since 1C-2N* is the two lowest suits and 1C-2C is majors, 1C-3C is Ss and Ds. -
1D-1M-2M is 11-14 and 3 trumps forcing? I can see forcing when 18-19 Do you use magic or Iphone to bid after that with 11?
-
Fairly normal for Precision players to use 1Red-1Major-2NT* as 6+ Red suit, 3 card support for your major and maximum values.
-
Steve2005 is correct that using the weaker version as 1H-3* and 1S-3N* would reduce Xs for a lead. I played with a lady that claimed to play splinters. Our first auction went 1S-4H* . Trumps broke nicely 5 and 5, however, the 2-1 fit was still well beyond my playing skill. We had a nice session after that first board. I have never cared for 1S-4H as a natural bid. Using 4C* as a two way bid would give the other pair twice as many chances to double for the lead.
-
Void showing bids are 4 level new minor suit bids(and 1S-4H*) 1H-3S*=any splinter now. 1S-3N*=any splinter now. Two tier splinter bids 1H-3S* shows the stronger range splinter. Four of a minor is a lower range splinter. 1S-3N* shows the stronger range splinter. Four of a new suit is a lower range splinter.

And how does the fact that Obama used a plane load of Euros to bribe Iran if your "theory" is correct?
-
I use 2N-3S* to tell about 5-5+ minor hands. Jlall suggests using the bid to show 5-4 minors. You might want to try 2N-3S* as a puppet to 3N. Now you can sign off with 4C if desired. Higher bids can still show various minor suit type hands.

The 1D opening with 11-21 seems quite reasonable since 1C* and rebids with Ds are sometimes problem hands. Precision in the 90s suggested opener using transfers for minor suit rebids. 1C*-1D-1N* showing clubs with ...1N-2C* showing @0-5. 1C*-1D-2C*s showing diamonds also followed the same style ...2C*-2D* shows 5+Hs with @6-7 dummy points NT hands bid 1C*-1D-1H*-1S*(semi forced)-1N to show 17-19. If you like this style, it allows 1C*-1D-2D* to show strong 4441 shapes. I looked at numerous PC generated examples and found that a range of 19+ allowed very accurate bidding. Hands with @16-18, rebid with a 4 card major using Meckwell style bids over 1C-1D-1S-? ...1S-1N*=0-5, ...1S-2C* is 0-2Ss and 6-7HCP, ...1S-2D*s shows 5+Hs @6-7HCP, 1S-2H* is a 3 card spade raise @6-7 dummy points and ...1S-2S is 4 trumps 6-7 dummy points. Opener is not going to pass 1C*-1D-1S-1N since he has an unbalanced hand to rebid 1S
-
The Mecklite bidders use 1N as 14=16 and I like to use that range to reduce problem hands. I also follow the Meckwell style 1C*-1D-1N=17-18. Meckwell open 2N with 19-20, however, I like to be able to play 1N with 19-20 if a partsc.ore is the limit. 1C*-1D-1H*(Kokish style, either 19-20 balanced or Hearts and another suit. A 1N rebid is 19-20 and any suit bid shows the heart 'plus another suit' type hand
-
Meckwell opens with 2+Ds(and also rarely with a singleton king/ace) and they open 1D with hands with a balanced 10-13HCP range.

I played with John Montgomery for several decades including KS, 2/1 and Precision. He showed me an improved method after 2D* that works very well. I like the Precision 2D* opening so much that I sometimes use it while playing other systems. I I have used a 2D* Flannery and a 2H*(Precision 2D* opening) at the same time. Kantar changed to five card majors some year back. Most good Precision players use 2C* as 6+ Cs now. If you like 4 card majors. Sabine Auken uses 4 card majors and canapé in her 1C*=16+HCP system.

AWM 1h-1s-1nt method playing flannery
spotlight7 replied to wank's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
What do you use 1H-2S for? I play(in a Precision framework) 1H-1S-any-2S* as a 6+S invite type hand. 1H-2S as 6+ Ss with less than an invite. If opener is not bidding game, stopping in 2Ss has advantages. -

Perhaps you could play 1H-1S-1N natural and 1H-1S-2C* as the Gazzilli version showing either 6+ H or 5H and 4+ clubs If you do that, you can use 1H-1S-2D* as a 3S raise @11-13 and ...1S-2H* as a 3S raise 14-15. -
Roman Spade? Or did you mean Roman Club? I played Roman Club for about a year in the 1980s. As a Blue Team Club player, I did not find it very hard to learn. It was fun to play. The occasional 3 card major opening led to some unwanted 4-3 contracts so I 'modified' it to have 1M promise 4+. Google REGRESsion if you want complex. It is also the most accurate system I have seen. I bid difficult hands against the owner of the site for about a year. My version of Precision worked well, however, his results were near perfect. I added improved methods to my system. It did not matter, my goal became to try and match his results. I learned a lot that year about bridge. He showed me improved ways to use steps when bidding. For a better known system Ultimate Club is the second best for obtaining great results. It still has the record for 13 wins in a row in the Bridge World magazine bidding contest. They only sold 3,000 copies of the system and I own two copies
