  1. I guess it is weird since this thread is supposed to be about Confederate Statues. But Barry brought it up.
  2. Thereby changing the course of history. Love her or hate her, I think everyone would have to agree it was a really, really poor choice of words. It won the election for Trump.
  3. I know I said I wouldn't be back here, but I just couldn't resist posting these observations by Walter Williams...a black man. http://dailysignal.com/2017/09/06/black-leaders-focus-lifting-people-poverty-not-purging-statues/ So after reading this would you judge Walter Williams to be 1. Overtly racist (as you have judged me) 2. Just another Uncle Tom (as most of you probably judge Clarence Thomas) or 3. As having a valid point ?
  4. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here. I have read these forums for many years and the only truly sane posts I have read have come from Ken Berg...a retired mathematics professor at the University of Maryland whom I've never met (but would like to). With that said, let me elaborate a little on my original thoughts in this thread. The point I was trying to make is that no matter how many marches are organized, no matter how much hell is raised, no matter how many memorials are demanded to be taken down, the "plight" of many African-Americans will not be alleviated until someone (BLM, Antifa, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, whomever) makes an effort to address the underlying problem...lack of education, unwanted pregnancy, unemployment, etc. My comments about "bad" white folks was intended for the KKK, Nazis, Skinheads, whatever they wish to call themselves. They are no better than (and probably worse than) BLM, Antifa, etc....nothing more than rabble rousers. I hope this clarifies my position which...like yours...is nothing more than musings on an internet forum. With all that said I bid you all a fond farewell. I won't be back here.
  5. LOL. I wondered how long it would take for someone to drag out the "r" word....the standard retort of leftists to those who don't share their worldview. I will retreat now, properly shamed, into my basket with all the other deplorables.
  6. I am well aware of all that. I lived through it; I was born in 1938. Marvin Griffin was not my favorite governor. The Georgia flag was changed again in 2003.
  7. I understand all that. But my original question remains: How will the lives of black Americans be improved by tearing down Confederate monuments...or any other monument for that matter? I've read that The Reverend Al Sharpton considers the Jefferson Memorial "an insult to my family". If we take them all down will blacks instantaneously be free to stop murdering each other in Chicago? Will they be free to stop making babies they can't support? Will they be free to have households that include both a mother and a father? Will they be free to graduate from high school or trade school and find a decent job? Or will they just be free to start another hysterical "movement" and raise hell about that? And please note.......I am not condemning just blacks here. There are plenty of whites with the same shortcomings. I don't have much use for them either.
  8. And protesting to tear down a statue of Robert E. Lee will accomplish that goal? Somehow the logic escapes me.
  9. And that will make everybody feel all better and the lives of all Americans will be greatly improved.....correct?
  10. My wife (of 57 years) grew up in Crawfordville, Georgia...the home of Alexander H. Stephens. His homeplace, Liberty Hall, is preserved there as a museum; there is also a Confederate museum next door; I have been through both many times; there is a state park there named for him...A. H. Stephens state park. At the end of the war between the states Stephens came back to Georgia and was elected Governor. He died in office shortly after his inauguration and was buried in Oakland cemetery in Atlanta. His remains were later exhumed and re-buried in the front yard of Liberty Hall and a statue erected there. Should this statue be taken down and the museum shuttered, would my wife's life be diminished? I doubt it. She will always have happy memories of growing up in a small town in middle Georgia where black folks worked for (and were well-paid) by her folks and were actually considered a part of the family. Should the statue be taken down and the museum shuttered, would the kooks who are fomenting all this hysteria lives be enriched? I doubt it unless there is some vicarious delight in knowing that you have stirred up a bunch of crap. If Antifa, BLM, Democratic Socialists of America, etc. etc. are actually concerned about the average American...either black or white...they need to offer solutions for better health insurance, lower taxes, more jobs, etc...things that actually matter to the average American. Re-fighting a war that ended over 152 years ago is both futile and foolish.
  11. "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor." And "It depends on what the meaning of the word is is. If the...if he...if is means is and never has been, that is not - that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement." come to mind.
  12. There are 6,904 posts in this thread. I have read all 6,904, Ken's post above being probably the most sensible. The bottom line is: 1. Donald J. Trump is the President of the United States until 2020 (maybe beyond). 2. He is not going to resign. 3. He is not going to be impeached. 4. Hillary Clinton is not going to be the POTUS 5. Yes, the Repubs are liars 6. So are the Dems Perhaps you should start working on something else....maybe the crazy little fat kid in North Korea.
  13. Yeah, man. I know what you be sayin'. Hey!
  14. Well darn! I guess that means they cancelled the parade and the fireworks?
  15. Since Mark Twain got in here how about..... "Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself."
  16. On a more serious note.... "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain, and most fools do." Benjamin Franklin
  17. From Desiderata "Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. . . . . . . With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."
  18. “I spent half my money on gambling, alcohol and wild women. The other half I wasted.” ― W.C. Fields
  19. With Generalissimo Obama as the commanding officer on the ground?
  20. Obviously the solution we need is obesity control legislation. Never fear. It will happen. Michael Bloomberg is already working on it in NYC. :)
  21. a. Frankly I don't see the NRA as a "bad guy". As I mentioned in a post above they promote gun education and gun safety. Yet the main stream media paints them as the culprit every time there is a mass shooting just because of their support of the 2nd amendment. I think every person on earth with a soul was heartsick upon hearing about the Newtown massacre; I know I was. However, I have serious doubts that Adam Lanza was an NRA member. I am equally doubtful about James Holmes, Seung-Hui Cho, Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold, the three guys who just shot up a parade in New Orleans, etc. etc. b. I could support background checks even though it appears to me to be nothing more than feel-good legislation. Would a background check have stopped Lanza? Doubtful since the weapons were bought by his mother who apparently was just as sane (or insane) as the Kentucky parents who prompted this thread. Licensing to ensure knowledge of legal responsibilities of gun ownership sounds like a good idea if we can accept the fact that only responsible people who already know their legal responsibilities will buy a license; the friendly neighborhood drug dealer will probably be a cold prospect. c. I agree. d. My 21 year-old granddaughter is working her way through vet school. She lives in a semi-remote area alone. She has a Ruger .380 pistol and a Remington 223 rifle (she likes to hunt too). Will she ever need them? I hope not. But she knows how to use them and I'm glad she has them. We all wish for a reasonable solution to the senseless mass killings. But I don't think it's reasonable to lay 100% of the blame at the feet of the NRA and the gun manufacturers.
  22. The disagreement, as far as I was concerned, was not over my son's date. The disagreement was over three punks showing up at my front door in the middle of the night with intent to harm one of my children.
  23. I have never been a member of the NRA, so don't really have an axe to grind there. But I have looked at their website. They PROMOTE gun education and safety. See for yourself here or here. So exactly what does "overcome the NRA" mean?
  24. It was a Porsche Panamera Turbo....0-60 in 3.9 seconds, demonstrated top speed 189MPH, completely street legal and no, I didn't get it up to 189 but I did goose it a few times. My point is this: If the government can say, "You don't really need a pistol, so we'll keep it for you at a gun range somewhere" they can just as easily say, "Well you don't really need a 520HP sedan, so we'll keep it for you at a race track somewhere." I just have a problem with that.
  25. No one needs to have an automobile with 500+ horsepower and a demonstrated top speed approaching 200MPH either, but I recently got to drive one; it was fun. Following your line of reasoning all such automobiles should be garaged at race tracks where their owners can come out and drive them occasionally.
