  1. Our younger son is 48; the older one will be 52 this year. So no, there are no children in the house. When they were living here I did keep it in a lock box. The drawer is not locked.
  2. In 1978 my older son was a junior in high school. One night around 11:30 my front doorbell rang. It was three punks, one of whom had a beef with my son because he was dating a girl that HE liked. Their intent was for the three of them to get my son out of the house and do him bodily harm. I opened the door with the .357 in my hand; I didn't point it at anyone, but it was clearly visible. I didn't say one word. I didn't have to. They left and I haven't seen them since. So there you have my reasoned objection.
  3. My younger son belongs to a 30-member hunting club which leases 1,000 acres on the Chattahoochee river up in the northern end of the county where we live. That's where we go shoot. Sometimes we shoot cans and bottles; sometimes we shoot paper targets; sometimes we take shotguns and shoot clay pigeons. Sometimes he goes up there and shoots a wild turkey. We ate one last Thanksgiving; it was tasty. I agree with everyone here that giving a 22 caliber rifle to a 5 year-old, leaving it where it was readily accessible to the child unsupervised and with a live round in the chamber is absurd. Well actually I think that giving any firearm to a 5-year old is absurd. But proposing that the solution to this absurdity is to confiscate all the guns and lock them up at a gun club is analogous to proposing that you use a bulldozer to get the weeds out of your rose garden. And equally absurd in my opinion.
  4. As Sam Goldwyn said.........."Gentlemen, include me out." I have several pistols. And I enjoy shooting them occasionally. I've never killed anything with any of them except some pop bottles and beer cans. And I'll just be damned if I'll surrender them to the gestapo to store for me until I want to go kill some more pop bottles and beer cans. The .357 magnum is in a drawer in my bedside table. Loaded. With hollow point rounds. I intend to keep it there.

  6. That's certainly borne out in .
  7. Several years ago I read about a case in Michigan where a kid was charged with violation of the city's noise pollution ordinance...blasting heavy metal stuff through his car speakers. The judge sentenced him to 3 hours in a room alone listening to Wayne Newton records. Justice was served.

    Huh?

Probably not much since the guy's name was Michael Rennie.
  10. True story. nic deleted (Private): Which colour is which? →nic deleted: clubs and spades are black. diamonds and hearts are red. nic deleted (Private): thanks This guy has a total of 6 logins and rates himself as expert. QED. Sometimes you just gotta laugh and keep on going.
  11. You can always self-publish. I have a friend who did that and the book is available from Amazon.com. I don't think he's sold too many though.
  12. Rubber scoring is not supported on the web version of BBO. Assuming your desktop has a Windows OS you can download the software at http://www.bridgebase.com/intro/installation_guide_for_bbo.php
  13. And apparently neither member of this couple ever made a passing grade in arithmetic. I can't see condemning the credit card companies for the financial illiteracy of a large portion of the American people. The "BUY NOW - PAY LATER" pitch has been around for at least 50 years and consumers have succumbed to it more and more. Look at the furniture retailers. They don't advertise furniture; they advertise the DEAL..."No payments for two years, No interest for three years" etc. Same with the automobile retailers. They do advertise features to some degree, but a lot of it is stuff like, "$0 down, sign and drive, no payments for 6 months." The credit card issuers are no different. "Transfer balances. Only 4.9% for the first 60 days." In other words, "Pay off your Visa with your new Mastercard." And people fall for it. I don't blame it on the credit card companies. I blame it on a lack of education.
  14. Drag and drop is not available on BBO. However, a card will move about 1/8" either vertically or horizontally on mouseover and stay in that position until you click to play it. So you do know which card will be played next when you click the mouse.
  15. In both the Windows version and the web version the card selected moves on mouseover. It's not the same as drag and drop, but it does provide an "are you sure?" before you play the card.
  16. Cribbage is the best two-handed card game ever invented imo.
  17. You can't change it. Just create a new one.
  18. Actually my point was that we may as well already have dropped it because it occurs so seldom it's hardly worth fooling with. But I did find it interesting that Nickell and Freeman thought it worthwhile enough to have it in their partnership agreements. I have no idea what they did if they wanted to preempt 3♠.
  19. A couple of years ago I was watching some high-powered players on BBO. I think it was Nick Nickell and Richard Freeman...not sure, but it was a pair of their caliber. One of them, holding a solid 7-card minor and no outside ace or king opened it 3♠. I thought "how cool!" Responder, with stoppers, can now bid 3NT and the opening lead comes up to his hand instead of through it. I suggested to my regular partner that we play it that way. Two years later we're still waiting for a hand where we can use it.

  21. Yeah. Exactly what is profanitty? Is it similar to vulgaritty or abusiositty?
  22. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious." The same can be said about cheaters on BBO; those determined to cheat will find a way. And playing from the same IP address is not ironclad proof of cheating anyway. There are a number of pairs on BBO who play from the same IP address that are honest players. Fred and Sheri come to mind and there are many others. You can always develop a list of those that you don't want playing in your tournaments for whatever reason and bar them from registering.
  23. The web version has a nice deal generator. From the home page click "Hands and Results", then click "Hand Editor".
