My dream BBO 'LA Bridge CLub' Quote (Emperor of the 2-cent game from Bob Hamman at the Table) It is fxxking good idea to build a rubber bridge club in BBO. But much work is still needed .....   Hope no one accused me of copyright ....

Login the QA server several times but there is always only 1 person (myself) at 8-9pm EST. Just now I see the 2nd player and tried a few hands...... Not good. Maybe someone has mentioned before, 1. The GIB play speed. I have the default value-medium. The initial few tricks GIB is slow but acceptable. The later tricks GIB (both of them, when I defend) is just too quick. I even couldnt see the cards. It is not human at all and offer the player a bad feeling. 2. GIB sucks Maybe true that GIB could be reasonable/good in most hands. But it sucks at the most critical hand!!! I am holding ♠AJxxx ♥AKxxx ♦Kxx Bidding goes 1♠ by me, 2♣ by LHO GIB, 3♣ by GIB partner (limit raise or better), 6♠ by me...... 7NT by GIB partner..... She is holding ♠KQxxx ♥QJx ♦Axx ♣Kx Maybe I could suit GIB style (not sure what style of her, I dont own a GIB myself) and bid 4NT and signoff in 6♠ (take the money at rubber) GIB would not bid 7NT, but it is taking away the fun. True it could happen to my opps. But the money involved (+50/100 points) would not be enough to offset the nonsense. Much work needed.

Bridge Promotion

Sure I dont think you are pin-pointing Chinese. Just want to add that the same situation could happen elsewhere in the world, if their leaders do the same. :)   -

It isnt a problem the public doesnt understand the game if it is shown on TV. If one get Miss America to play bridge on TV, who is watching the cards? Certainly not me. It is just a promotion. The people who are interested would later get into the game, after the TV show. But I too agree too much energy is spent trying to promote bridge. -

The thread does offer us some point of thought and personally I enjoy it. The starter of the thread didnt ask anyone to do anything.... He just take an example. So it is pointless to say below and it ruins a healthy discussion Sorry for the ramblings. Back to the question, personally I dont think that would be ALL bad. Agassi and Mourinho - the Chelsea football club manager are the 'bad boys' in Tennis and Footabll. I would label them as ' colourful characters'. Tennis and Football does benefits from these guys in my opinions. We could not/should not request someone to be 'bad boys'. And no one could try to act like 'bad boys'. It is sort of born gift/talent. ZT is good. Most bridge players are ordinary and would benefit from it. If there were a Agassi or Mourinho in the bridge world, he would not need to break ZT, he could generate enough publicity elsewhere. Any Agassi or Mourinho in the bridge world? Maybe Zia Mahmood is the closest for now ...... :) ;) -
When using a FD conv card, are opps able to see a full card? i.e. when they clcik conv, there is a show NS/EW and a FD CC pops up, they could then click Show offensive bidding/etc to view the CC. Or they could only see the explanation of various bid in the bidding pad? :)

Having thought about this, I can only think of one way, and even that is not foolproof. Cut for partners. You play 4 hands Chicago style against three randomly drawn partners. You may get lucky and drawn a friend whom you can IM/phone/etc with. But chances are that you will not draw a friend most of the time. Of course you would also not allow kibs in any money game. I do like the current money bridge set up though and GIB is certainly as good as a random partner you'd cut for anyway. Agree. I would like to play with human beings (partner/opps) also in the Money Bridge Club. Players take their own risk. Refer chapter 'Emperor of the 2 cents game' of Bob Hamman's 'At the Table', I would be most happy to see the LA Bridge Club back to life in BBO. There is also cutting of partners. :P

How to handle OD/bad debt? Unlike blackjack/poker, you place your bet and the most you lose is your bet already deposited. One does not know how much a bridge hand costs until it's over.... Will a maximum stake be set for each hand? The initial deposit has to be carefully selected and the balance have to be updated instantly :)  How would the BB$ be cashed?

Question.... Will the myhands page show the hands from Money bridge room? Any different colour to easily identify the hands played from Money bridge room? Though one could spot it out with human-GIB vs human-GIB, some colour makes it easy if these hands would be shown. Will the results (in points) be shown somehow? :)

Epoch making ...  I play some money bridge with my friends and our scoring method is called 'Shanghai scoring' (unsure how it comes from and if it is right). It is basically IMP scoring discounted by the extra hcp. If you score +400 (=9 IMP) with a combined hand of 24 hcp. Your actual score is 9-4=5. If you screw a slam (-50 = 2 IMP) with a combind hand of 30 hcp. You lose actual score 10+2 = 12. We swap partners every 8 hands. Still the player getting the cards more often end up the winner though. If there is any consideration to implement other scoring (e.g. Russian scoring mentioned in this thread), kindly give it some thought too.... So interested to see how the BBO money bridge would develop ...... :)

I am sick of many players who mention/complain online cheating here and there. I do not consider seeing own CC in online as cheating. It is difference between online bridge and live bridge, as explained in posts by others. For online cheating in originally forms (ICQ/MSN/etc), it is not as frequent to me. When suffering at bridge, 1. You are simply having a bad day. Or your opps are having a good day. 2. You are not as good as you think. 3. How often you suspect cheating when you are winning. :) ;)

While there are attempts to build standard BBO adv / 2/1 / prec CC, I wonder if it would benefit the general. Most players have their own basic system and may not need a full CC. For pickup partnership, I wonder if one would adhere to the CC firmly. SAYC, and a SAYC CC has been there for long and yet everyone has his/her own SAYC. I would rather suggest more conventions built in FD format e.g. DONT/CAPP/LEB/Checkback/NMF/INVM/etc. There are some already in the Bridge Base Online directory and they fit into the CC prepared nicely. I hope to see more conventions which could be used and fit to ones own CC. Another question - If one would like to employ DONT against Strong NT only, would FD be smart enough to do that? I dont think it is high priority though. :) ;)  PS Just note that dealing with diff range NT opening has been raised before.
-
I like FD in the current form very much. If there were any change in the FD area, please keep in mind that there are many causal players who enjoy easy/friendly games. I seldom object my opps to discuss their methods during bidding. I may do that sometimes, but only to make the game faster/more enjoyable. My FD CC would be far from 'complete/concise' in view of the serious players. I have no intention to make the CC 'complete/concise' to that extent. I would be happy to improve my FD CC over time when I like, but not to do that to fulfill any rules. Personally very serious tournament bridge is not what I am looking for in BBO. I like good/friendly bridge in an easy atmosphere, which BBO is offering. Cheating has never occured as frequent as described in many other threads. If I suspect cheating, I may walk away to another table. I may equally likely be interested to stay at the table to see what happens next ..... ;) :P B)

I have a FD CC and load it when playing. But opps still click on my bids for explanation. Are they seeing the explanation or only my side see the explanation? ;) :P

I am indeed South and 100% with you. You say all what I want to say. North has defence for sure, but where is the 4 tricks required? Is it too much for both ♠ and ♣ working so you get 2♥1♠1♣? Chance of getting 3♥ is too slim? South has at most 1♥ in most cases. Advertisement - Please also share your ideas on my another thread ... A defence problem.

As a good bridge player, one should get used to stay updated while the hand proceeds, no matter how much you disagree with pd play in last trick, or last few tricks...... So for further posts, please answer the 3 questions 1 by 1, no matter your answer to 1st / 2nd questions disagrees with the actual table bidding.....

Both side NV Last board of Playing a IMP match, leading by 2 imp at the moment. Is * a clear 4♠? After S 3♠, is North having a diff call? Should he do something (X or 4♠) rather than pass? Has South done his part after *3♠ (no matter if you think he should bid 4♠ at *), should he bid further after partner PASS? Is it a difficult call?
-
I like FD and agree trial & error is a feasible way of using FD. After some struggling, I now have a FD conv card with my favourite partner. However to make it popular, an idiot guide would probably be useful. :) B)

Appreciate any comments ..... :) B)

You would bid 4♠ at * or at ***? Regardless, suppose the bidding goes as described until *** would you bid 4♠? If you bid 4♠, what makes you do that, when your 1st call is 3♠?
