At MPs I'm less likely to stretch than at IMPs (especially at these colors). However, I think I'm bidding 3♥ in either situation here. Partner just needs Kxxx, xx, Kxx, xxxx to make game a very nice prospect. Not sure if he'll go with this hand opposite a 3♥ bid, but there are other hands he could have where he will go. In general, I try to take my plusses at MPs (if the game is makeable, but hard to make you get a good score for +170 anyways and +140 is much better than -100) but at IMPs (especially red) the game needs to only be about 40% to make it worth being there.

Revisiting "Bridge Personality", part 1

Sounds interesting. Minor question: which meanings are associated to "1" and which to "5" on all the axes? -
Heart King seems the obvious lead, and I don't see a reason to not go obvious on this hand.

A player should not quit if the game is not yet finished

That's the cleanest version of that joke I've ever heard.

The reason I didn't was because LHO just might have the heart Queen and I'd go down when I should have made an overtrick. Not cashing the queen protects against all that. But you're correct, I should have made the overtrick anyways.

I'm still pissed that I got this wrong....I'm pleased that I was able to forget it until the end of the night. [hv=pc=n&s=sak42haj4dqj84ca5&w=s6h87dkt62cjt7642&n=sj95h93da973ckq93&e=sqt873hkqt652d5c8&d=n&v=e&b=9&a=p2s(5+5+%20S%20and%20other)3nppp&p=d2d3d5d8dqdkdah2s5s8sks6djd6d7c8d4dtd9h5c4c3h6cac5ctcks3]399|300[/hv] The hand was now completely counted out. All I had to do was double hook the heart, leave the clubs alone and if E splits his honors take my ace and endplay him (If West wins a heart he has to exit a heart to avoid a club finesse). Either way, East gets endplayed into giving me an entry to dummy for the club later and a second spade trick. WHY DID I CASH THE QUEEN!! I then didn't even recover and play east for both heart honors, I meekly cashed out....sigh...

Thanks for the responses, I did consider 3NT, but wasn't sure I had enough tricks in hand opposite a passed hand (especially with the stiff club). As you can see 3NT would have been bad, but 4♥ or 5♦ quite good. We won a few IMPs when the other table tried slam, but I still wasn't happy with my bids. Thanks for the suggestions.

This came up a little while ago, and wyman and I disagreed (well, I don't think either of us had a really strong opinion, but we differed on what we thought was happening). The agreement we have for minorwood, is that the trump suit must already be agreed upon before 4m can be a minorwood bid (and we must be in a GF auction). Our auction was: 1D-1S 3N*-4D 3N showed (6)7+ solid diamonds and a hand too good for gambling 3NT. Is 4D minorwood, or asking partner to Q or otherwise investigate slam?

I'm with Fluffy. I think it's a great idea, but I'm not sure any of the events I play qualify as "serious". And those that are close, I play at most once, maybe twice, a year. I do play online a bit, but I don't think that's "serious". In f2f right now I'm experimenting with intermediate 2 bids, but so far haven't found a good game to try them in (they work great in a weak field).

Ok, then I don't have a misplay to report :) There was a hand where the bot misplayed, but only if it knew about this. Thanks for the fast reply.

I was wondering about the "Best hand" tournaments, where South gets the best HCP hand at the table (or "a" best HCP hand). When running simulations, do the bots take this into account?
-
I know the bots don't like penalty doubles

In fact, everyone who doubled 5♣ had it pulled. One person managed to hit 4♣. -

It was an ACBL robot tourney. It happened at least one other time. Here's the traveler: http://www.bridgebase.com/myhands/hands.php?traveller=9657-1321116601-51205548&username=bunnygo -
indeed.

Thanks for all the replies. Lots of good things to think about next time. Here's the hand (sadly 4DX made on the nose...I think pass was the par bid).
-
Yes, in retrospect, I probably should have opened the hand. My (mistaken) thoughts were: 1) I don't want to pre-empt with this hand 2) It seems a bit light to open 3) I have the master suit, I can come in later and be ok I did bid 5 spades (making exactly). 5DX would have been 800 on basically any defense. The hand

Thanks for all the responses. I should have found the spade switch. I was worried that if I led a spade, he'd win the King in hand (or something), pull trump, and pitch diamonds on clubs. Oops. The hand

All white, third seat: KQ9, KQ64, AK532, 3 P-(3S)-??? I passed (I hated it too....) partner reopened with a double, I sat for it, and we set it 2 tricks. Comments? Thoughts? Ridicule?

You are absolutely correct. Opposite a strong NT a 10 pt hand with a 5 card major should transfer to the major and then bid 3NT choice of games, unless their hand is very distributional (say a second 4+ suit or a 6th spade or something similar). This sequence should become automatic for you and your partner playing this system. In this case, you have a very good hand for spades so you should superaccept (some people play that 3D shows a superaccept with xx of diamonds, then partner can bid 3H as a retransfer). Either way, your partnership should be in 4 spades on these cards.

NAY. Completely against my style.

I don't have any suggestion for this problem; I'm not even sure if it's worth fixing, but here's the problem: When in 4th seat with 3 passes to you, the misclick of a pass cannot be undone.
