  1. I'd have more sympathy for underleading the AK if *I* had a void and needed to get you in to give me a ruff. I think that making a bad lead to hope that partner has a void *and* didn't make a lightner double is too big a parlay.
  2. To suggest a further modification to mikeh's suggestion. I like playing that 2S is one of: 1) invite to 3N 2) weak diamonds 3) both minors weak or strong and 2N is a club transfer. Now over 2S opener can bid 2N to not accept, or bid his preferred minor with a hand that would accept 3N. Responder then clarifies which hand they have by passing or bidding accordingly (3M is a splinter with both minors strong).
  3. 1) Yes. 2) Yes, he is allowed to use his judgement. It would also have been fair for him to have given me a ticket for a blown out light. 3) Not usually. 4) BUT BRIDGE IS A GAME!! Do not conflate these situations. Games have rules and they must (should) be enforced as stated. In baseball, if an ump gets a call wrong this is a big deal. Same in soccer (for anyone who doesn't know baseball). It's not that these things don't happen, but within their abilities to rule correctly, we expect them to. Police have lots of goals, primarily to maintain order and safety. If they can do this by not giving a ticket, they need not give a ticket.
  4. GIB seems to (understandably) have trouble figuring out the 100% probability of giving partner a ruff when he collides the A and K of a side suit. http://tinyurl.com/85b9ppt
  5. It seems pretty clear that a PP should be applied to the North player (especially because he admits knowing that he used UI). As for whether the contract should be modified, I don't see that it should, since it will only help the OS.
  6. But if he asks and is told, "no, we just play it is natural here" then he's now put his partner in a bind against leading clubs later.
  7. According to the appeals report in the daily bulletin, they didn't ask what 2♣ was.
  8. Your spots summed to 64. I recall a recent George Jacobs article in the ACBL Bulletin (although I couldn't find it) where someone had a hand that summed to less than 50.
  9. They even caught my brother once (and he's quite savvy...just was late and he the e-mail was convincing). It looked a lot like an e-mail from his credit card, so he clicked the link and filled out the information. As soon as he was done, he realized what had happened, and called the credit card company.
  10. Yeah, I'm surprised that on board 2 you didn't support double (or just raise hearts if you don't play support doubles). On the first hand, hiding the majors seems wrong. I'd bid 1♠, but I'd think about doubling instead.
  11. Here's what I play with my partners (and I think that it--or something like it--is fairly standard): If they double our transfer: Pass = I have a doubleton of your suit Complete the transfer = I have 3+ of your suit XX = I am interested in playing this redoubled contract. If you have more than a minimum and a small doubleton of this suit, you should probably pass. If they double our stayman bid: Redouble = to play as above Pass = club stopper, partner can now XX to ask you to finish the stayman bid Bid = the natural stayman response, and denies a club stopper One can switch the Pass and Bid meanings.
  12. In this specific case, I try to say anything except "Ace" or "Ace, please" etc. because of the enunciating issue with "eight". I'll say "Big" or "Up" or even just motion vehemently up with my thumb, but I find all of those easier to understand than "Ace".
  13. Is it in the works to provide GIB with the "best hand" knowledge? Even just adding that to the simulations might help its gameplay at the tourneys immensely.
  14. Is 4♥ not alerted in the EBU? I don't know the regulations, but in the ACBL it is alerted (even though most bids over 3NT are not alerted).
  15. Welcome to the forums. At the risk of coming off a bit short, this is probably the most proposed change on these forums. I don't fully understand the programming details as to why this change is hard, but apparently it is.
  16. Except for that time in Cleveland where I thought about psyching a 1NT in 3rd seat, and Val did psyche it at the other table (successfully).
  17. Dear god, why did east pitch hearts?
  18. Do the opponents have the right to know if you play unusual no trump in similar situations? This seems to fall under the category of implicit agreement.
  19. When did han get a boss suit? I've never seen him in any suit, let alone a boss one. And what's with the 80s slang? I'll just bid 2♠.
  20. Somewhere you made a mistake. I can say with no calculations at all that this is occurs every hand. Edit: Rethinking, I understood what you were saying to be "every hand has a suit 3 cards or shorter". What you meant was "Every hand has a tripleton, and may have a shorter suit as well." My mistake.
  21. Sorry. I completely agreed with Barney Frank in that matter. In general he could be harsh, but it was because he is too smart to put up with idiots, and not such a great politician that he could hide his contempt.
  22. If RHO also has only 2 spades, then we'll be ok.
  23. wyman certainly knows about psyching 2NT here. On the first hand in a 9 AM regional pairs event, he got me to a vulnerable 4♥ (when I opened a weak 2) and he had a stiff heart and three points. After shaking the cobwebs out of my brain I realized I just had to hold it to down 5 for a top (they were also vulnerable). Better than a cup of coffee. :) Edit: The opponent hadn't doubled though, so it was much more effective. 4th seat had a 19 count and believed wyman (and me when I showed a maximum pre-empt)
