  1. Yes, but when forming a sit down partnership that evening, is it the first thing they announce that they play?
  2. I am allowed up to 25 recipients and see the "other recipients" entry line. Thanks! Edit: Just realized I'm in "Full Members"
  3. As people have noted (and phil correctly corrected) this feels like it should be called a criss-cross trump squeeze. All (basic) trump squeezes are necessarily similar in feel to criss-cross squeezes because of the nature of using the last trump as either a possible entry or used to ruff out a winner. Thanks for the hand Justin, very cool; I've never found one at the table myself.
  4. I got upset just reading this.
  5. With that start to the game it'll be hard (but not impossible) for my prediction to come true.
  6. Nope, haven't paid attention to any of that, just been doped up on various drugs...
  7. I had a dream last night it'd be pats 40 giants 14. I hope the dream was a false one.
  8. Every league needs bunny's to bash! I'm in!
  9. This all sounds like a great idea Timo. Most of the suggested details sound like they would be fine (but varying degrees of work for you). Let us know when you actually need volunteers to play.
  10. Here's a columnist (humorously) go through the entire quote. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/02/opinion/collins-mitt-speaks-oh-no.html?hp
  11. The amazing thing is that the full quote is about as far from true conservative values as you get. The point isn't that we need not worry about the poor because there's a safety net. The safety net should be there and be temporary so that the unfortunate can get back to work. I think that's likely to lose him conservative votes. The out of context (or in context) phrase is more likely to lose him liberal votes.
  12. He also said, "I don't care about the very rich."
  13. Don't forget to vote if you haven't done so already. Voting ends Friday, February 3 at midnight.
  14. Thanks all for the comments. This situation had not been explicitly discussed with this partner (we'd played several events together before, but not in over a year) and simply agreed to "standard" for any such situation. We both understood that the double was "do something smart," not "I have diamonds." The issue for me was "what is smart?" It seemed a bit pushy to turn a plus score into a potential minus by risking it on a slam (partner may not be able to cover all my slow losers), and with 3 Aces and zero trump I thought my ODR was not as low as most of the responders seem to, so I passed. Didn't work out... Nice guess ;) That was indeed partner's hand, so pass was not the best option. 6 was cold (on not 5-0 hearts), 7 on finding the queen of clubs. Even after reconsidering that pass was wrong, it was still not clear to me if I was supposed to bid 6C, 5NT, or something else. Thanks for the thoughts.
  15. Team match Red vs. White: AT9, AQJ86, Void, A9854 In second seat you open 1 heart (sorry inquiry), The bidding continues: (P)-1♥-5♦-X (P)-??? Now what?
  16. At MPs, I think this hand should definitely go low. That means passing the double (I don't hate a 2♠ bid, but anything else is insane). At IMPs this hand is clearly worth an invitational pass, your hand has 8 losers, no controls, and no shape above what your first bid promised. It's not that great a hand.
  17. I believe he meant 3♦ by overcaller, not advancer.
  18. XKCD was topical and amusing again! I'd never think aquaman was useful though.
  19. While in general I agree with both, they've been using the former for years now (gah!) and the latter is technically possible. For example, you can give 110% of what you can do safely. Thus (likely) injuring yourself, but getting the job done. This happens a lot in engineering with safety limits etc.
  20. Needless to say the heated discussion resulted in wyman getting stranded on a shutdown highway in NJ with a blown tire that wouldn't come off.
  21. The answers to both questions are penalty. Once a double has been intended as penalty or converted for penalty all future doubles are penalty.
  22. For Thread of the Year: Antrax's Blunder Blog.
  23. And yet dividends and profits from owning McDonald's stock is to be more highly encouraged by the economy than investing in a franchise and actually hiring people and running a store? Quite frankly, I think you need to read hrothgar's response above, and consider what you are actually saying about this. Starting your own business, hiring employees and paying yourself a salary is taxed at the full rate. But pushing money around in the market and getting paid dividends is taxed less. This is not to say there isn't a societal good towards investing in the market, just that I don't think it's "better" than working or other investments of time and/or money. This whole concept that capital gains are to be taxed less is very recent, and I don't think it's particularly a good one. The *really* strange part of this is with hedge fund managers who take 2 and 20 of clients money as salary, but get to claim it's capital gains.
