i am no engineer, but anyone who has installed plastic fencing know it cracks when exposed to the sun. to keep the thing supple you have to rub all sorts of treatment on it, much worse than whitewashing the picket fence. plastic aint chep, costs a lot in pollution, and i think it even increases some cancers. some plastics become porous after a while, and that is why sodas in plastic bottles go on sale after 90 days or something-- the companies hasve to get rid of it.

a few years ago the bil used to set up a help table for persons to learn how to use the software. i have meta a couple of users at bbo, who have never used the windows client, and are usually older and lack the savvy of younger people, who have trouble navigating, chatting, finding tournaments etc... i was wondering if bbo could set up some orientation session for new users, run by yellows who could broadcast the event as they happen, perhaps a couple times a week. ps. these people have trouble finding the hosts or even realizing the hosts are help volunterrs.,

i buy books, lots of them, and i read them sometimes i dont understand them and put them away,months, or maybe even years later, i return to them and they start to make sense there will be authors who make you understand better, i like mollo, i am non native english speaker, just like him, i understand him better i have had regular partners, and have tried the postmortem thing, they work, for a while but i have good memory, and the books get in the way, partners do not understand, i suddenly discover what was causing a certain kind of loss, partner does not follow, partnership breaks, i ususally find better partners sometimes i realize why some partners stopped playing with me, i was not playing at their level, sometimes they return and now want to play with me, but i never do play with them again. if i have in fact started to play better that they want to play with me, then i need to find a better partner some of my favourite partners are still those from my days of the refugee club, been years and they still have not learned splinters, but they dont call me idiots and neither remove my penalty doubles, i enjoy the game. i am now in study phase, i just study more than i play.

yesterday i was approached by a player from brazil who appeared to be a new user. he told me he had been collecting the names of brazilian players, making his list available and asking if i kept a similar list. in the old version we could select the view to display the players by flag and therefore finding persons from a specific country. the task for seeking persons from a specific country must be quite burdensome, but perhaps necessary for monolingual persons, could we have an option in the find people by country as opposed touser name in the web version?

i have always hidden 4 sapdes that way 1nt in matchpoints scores better than partial in sapdes plus partner can use checkback i do prefer and play 12-14 nt -- just about going feral these days and giving up 15-17 nt

me thinks that is penalty partner hopefully opned with 2 quick tricks, you count yours, you must know why you are doubling if you are going to compete with a partial, you and partner have to agree on something i think hamilton is a well known device.

playing with an apparent better than avergae player, the bidding goes 1diamond by opp- takeout dbl by partner i held [hv=s=sxhkqxdjxxcajtxxx]133|100|[/hv] i responded 3 clubs the guy now bids 3 spades and suddenly i no longer like my hand under standard methods, i thought that 3 sapdes shows a 16+hcp hand with 6 spades, i considered bidding 4 spades, but i passed because i wondered where his 16 hcp might be coming from turned out the guy had about 13 hcp, four spades to ak, and 3 clubs to kq we had a fair chance of making 5 clubs my question is 1) is 3 spades forcing on me? Could it be that after a jump bid 3 spades is a control bid instead? 2) isn't it hoggish of the fella to ask me to bid my suit and then beat his chest over 4 spade trumps? 3) if he was going to bid a 4 card sapdes suit, why not just ovecall it one time? thanks

Someone using the new categories in the web client? :) actually i have been using the web browser because of that if and when i am playing with random partners or regular partners in tournaments, i want to mark some people for various reason, it is much easier than player notes or enmying people . but getting inot a table is still difficult because of the slowness of the refresh button another point about the web browser: ability to retrieve recent tournament results the next day , looking for those in the main site was tedious.

i only use the browser version if i am not in my own computer. the mouse over version for profiles interferes with the bidding and chat sometimes and there are a number of players who insist in not stating their system but rather say "it isin my profile, i don need to alert" calling the director is a drag. the other main reaso i do not switch to flash is that the bridgemaster deals are absent there, if theyr were there, or i were offered other means of accessing them, i think i would switch.

i think they should send fingerprints instead, that way they they touch the computer screen during login and would not be admitted without a match. this would keep convicted criminals out of bbo, and we could turn bad bidders inot convicted criminals in return. the improvement in the level of play would be tremendous

DONT is a better defense to the 15-17 nt but very few play it and among those who do you will find many who do not undertastand the 2d relay after the 2c inteference but here is a quote from mike cappelletii where he states that he designed the convention as a defense to ks`s weak nt, 12-14 range. ks is nolonger popular but the conventions stuck, for those of us who play ks the players at large do get beaten by the capp convention. "When I started playing bridge, the convention Brozel was very popular as a defense to 1NT. At the same time, however, the Kaplan- Sheinwold system was coming into vogue, and the weak 1NT it uses was robbing us blind. We needed a penalty double, but in Brozel, double showed a one-suited hand. So I thought 'Why not make double for penalty, and let 2 show the single-suiter?'" so your partner, who might even be a passed hand, bids a third suit. it might go like this: 1club by opp-p-1sapde- by opp- 2 hearts by partner or 1diamond by opp-p-2clubs by opp-p-3clubs by opp- 3 sapdes by partner the opps then go on to bid higher, and i go out of my way to lead the suit, especially if they are in nt and our saide has a fit usually the suit is crap, and truly i do not want to know if they have that crap headed by a jack it is very common at bbo so i have decided that i will lead what i feel like leading the lead directing double of a wonder suit headed by the queen is just super for partner with whom i play again, i simply warn them, be careful what you overcall, i will lead the suit and ignore all your signals, period. what ticks me off tho is that i dont see parameters for this in any book. an overcall is different from a balancing call, so i will not lead a balancing suit

and reporting here from palooka land i have never seen folks who open 2h with 7 cards get a good result. the ones who bid 3h later in the auction still get beaten.

yes, i do use the refresh button once i refresh, it takes time select a table and look at the profile of available partners -when a table has no permission required, the seats are taken with the speed of light, thorugh others who use the take me to a table feature where a table requires permission, i get seat no longer avalaibale or permission required at least 75% of the time when i play from home, i use the windows version because it is easy to find a place to play in the main bridge club anytime this week, i am away and have to use the browser on someone's computer, it is a nightmare because i have been a member of bbo for several years, i can find marked freinds from the lobby, but when no one is available, it is a nighmare so i just logoff

It is still very difficult for me to find a place to play in the main bridge club I do not çike the take me to a table feature because I would like to at least look at the partner's profile the mouse over takes a while, but i tried for quite a a while and got the message-- you cannot join table, about 85% of the time otherwise i got-- seat no lomger available or permission denied i am sure that many like the take me to a table feature, but that is generally bad bridge with people frequently leaving the table i suspect that others experience what i have experienced so they use take me to a tbale and then whne dont want to play with the partner they leave and try take me to a table again this is annoying for a pair who cannot play one hand with several redeal requests is there a way for automatic refresh evry so many minutes?
