You most certainly can add constraints to bridgebrowser, but you will not necessarily get 1000's of hands that meet those constraints. So a good simulator still has uses. But Bridgebrowser does put you in the relm of real world hands and has a functional windows interface. this was the main reason i started looking for a simulator to accompany my copy of BrBr. also, i've been able to constrain much more complicated hands via dealer than i can with BrBr - but that could easily just be that i don't know how to untap BrBr's full power. i intend to pick the author's brain thoroughly next week when i see him

i should have mentioned that i do in fact own a copy of BrBr already, and it's been endlessly useful to me. now that i've gotten henk's dealer working for me, i've all my needs covered :P

ok i finally got dealer working under windows (thanks cygwin!) this is my input file: n_hcp = (hcp(north) >= 13 && hcp(north) <= 18) n_maj = (hearts(north) >= 5 || spades(north) >= 5) s_dbl = (spades(north) == 2 && not hascard(north,AS) && not hascard(north,KS)) h_dbl = (hearts(north) == 2 && not hascard(north,AH) && not hascard(north,KH)) d_dbl = (diamonds(north) == 2 && not hascard(north,AD) && not hascard(north,KD)) c_dbl = (clubs(north) == 2 && not hascard(north,AC) && not hascard(north,KC)) n_ud = h_dbl || s_dbl || c_dbl || d_dbl n_sv = (shape(north, any 0xxx + any 1xxx)) n_ubl = n_ud || n_sv condition n_hcp && n_maj && n_ubl generate 1000000 action average "Opener" (hcp(north)), average "Responder" (hcp(south)), frequency (n_ud,0,1) netting results like this: which seems to be inline with what mrsock came up with...

hi mary, when you are configuring the table, you can click on the "Opponent's bidding" button and choose to always have them open something from a list of bids, or control their bids yourself manually for each hand. you can also choose to constrain the hands that you and/or your partner are dealt hope this helps!

thanks! hmm, that's an even rarer occurence than i had imagined. which is good! i have tried to use dealer but was unable to get it working correcty on my windows machine. i found an online interface to an older version that i've been using a little bit, but it's limited to 5000 deals i believe, and i'm not even sure how you get % results with it i'd be interested to see the input coding you used if you happen to have it handy :)

1) can someone run the following simulation for me? - 13-18hcp - 5 card major - 5332 / 5422 / 6322 shapes a ) how often will this hand come up? b ) out of those hands, how often will one (or both) of the doubletons contain neither an ace OR king? 2) can anyone recommend good simul software that can be purchased online? thanks in advance!

any chance we'll be able to use the symbol codes in the claim box sometime down the road? :D

i was afraid you'd say that about 2♦, but in retrospect the weak 2 majors are somewhat unnecessary because of the way majors are opened, so i think i'm ok. as for the 19+ major, i need to work out how often a 19+ major is gonna come up that isn't balanced and not good enough for a 2♣ and uncap the 2M opens accordingly i guess thanks!
-
I think I would be more inclined to bid 4♥ directly unless I knew for certain that 3♥ was forcing (which I don't). To me the cue bid belies the length of your ♥ suit and tends to indicate ♣ support.

I need input on this set of opening bids, particularly: 1) are there any hands that this set makes difficult/impossible to bid? 2) are there any bids here that are not GCC acceptable? 3) I'm undecided on where to stick 19-21 balanced hands - either as a 2N rebid after one of the minor opens, or as part of the 2♣ multi... ideas? I ask for your help because I am worried I'm overlooking something very simple that will screw me later, and because the GCC convention chart has always perplexed me (am I the only one that finds it vague?) Thanks! 1♣ [13+, better minor] OR [13-15, balanced (1N rebid)] 1♦ [13+, better minor] OR [16-18, balanced (1N rebid)] 1M [8-12, 4+ carder] 1N [10-12, balanced] 2♣ [9+ tricks in either major] 2♦ [weak 2 in either major] OR [22+, balanced (2N rebid)] 2M [13-18, 5+ carder, unbalanced] 2N [6-11, 5/5 or better minors]

good read, thank you :)

let's say someone put a gun to your head and forced you to play your 2NT opening to show a 4441 hand. what point range would you assign to the open? any other stipulations about the hand's value that you would require? thanks

1024x1280 actually, but Gerardo's right. i have a widescreen monitor with the ability to rotate 90 degrees which makes the monitor tall rather than wide - handy for me as i work with large documents. normal 90 degrees

version 4.2.5 when i switch my window between Maximize & Restore my menu bar moves to the top it goes back if i navigate anywhere that requires a fresh screen, but can be enticed to move back to the top if i toggle Max/Restore again. while it's up there it shimmers. this is occuring on a win2k machine - i have not noticed it before on my xp machine, but i've never bothered to try; i can attempt to recreate it when i get home. **EDIT ok i played a bit more and it turns out this is likely not happening to anyone but me. i use a monitor & screen resolution that are rotated 90degrees - i am unable to recreate this glitch when i spin my monitor & resolution back to normal. looks neat, though

4♣ seems a bit of a stretch to me $0.02

Why not? :( I'd also be curious to see these numbers - curiosity being the only reason. But I'm sure you have better things to do with your time. :(

alternatively, if it's a hand you played on BBO, you can look it up on www.bridgebase.com/myhands and then just copy and paste the link in a message.

since Dan's site seems to be suffering some bandwidth throttling, I've made a mirror available of the WJ2005 document here: http://www.speedofwood.com/temp/WJ2005.zip

What is the best improvement to BBO in the past yr
scoob replied to Deanrover's topic in General BBO Discussion
my favourite feature: it's still free :) it's hard to choose, there being so many additions to the gui that i enjoy, but if pressed i'd call it a tossup between the pre-alert box and right-clicking functioning in general. right-clicking by a nose. -
ok now the fun part: [hv=d=e&v=e&n=sk96432ha3dqcq974&w=sj87h765d98432c32&e=sa5hkq42dkt75cat6&s=sqthjt98daj6ckj85]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] comments in general are welcome, but i'm particularly interested in North's 2♠ and South's Pass at this point - where could we.. (er, i mean they :) ) went wrong

i'll play the J from dummy, but then i'm notoriously bad at playout
