3/14 is a holiday in our house, but it's got nothing to do with Pi, fortunately :)

ok, been meaning to do this for ages and finally got around to it today. - copied symbols font ahead of time - using CrossOver Office 4.2 (not sure which version of wine that shipped with, tbh) - let cxoffice do the install, and then had to create my own shortcut: "/home/scoob/cxoffice/bin/wine" --workdir "C://bbo" --check --bottle dotwine --cx-app "C:////bbo////NetBridgeVu.exe" - edited bbover.ini seems to be running just fine, first try 2.6.17-11-generic, ubuntu-edgy will likely try running it straight from newest wine and see if there's any diff.

nine clubs after partners preempt
scoob replied to plaur's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
i am inclined to bid each of their majors at least once this auction; i'll start with 3♠, then 4♥, pulling doubles of either and compete as high as 6♣/♦ -
any plans of expressing this statistic as a ratio or % and being made public?
-
fred, i think i may be in love with you :P

i played at a local club for the first time a few weeks back. there were about 15 or so tables, and my pickup partner and i came in dead last (i really shouldn't play 2/1, but that's a diff. story) and we were still awarded 1.xx masterpoints, being that we finished 3rd in the C bracket. :)

Happy Birthday Richard
scoob replied to the hog's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
please, richard - i told you i don't like to be called cute. now hand me that box with the candles in it, would you? -
maybe it's time for this to change. if you want to leave between hands you should have to have permission from others at the table - if you leave (signout of bbo) without permission you're automatically banned from re-joining bbo for a short term (hours?) (i know this will never happen and i'm sure i could come up with several pages of logistical problems arising from it - but it's nice to dream)
-
irrefutably. sadly, not much. the method i use myself (as i'm sure others do) is to keep track of opponents who have provided a positive experience - when starting a table, i always invite from that list before i (resignedly) open the table up to the public.
-
i'm inclined to make a negative double as it may discourage them from playing in a major fit (i'd love to defend NT here) at the risk of playing a 7card major our way at the 2 level - one i'm willing to take with even a pickup partner.
-
in response to the OP, some TDs start their tournament with kibs allowed and then after a few rounds disallow them specifically to see which players, if any, are suddenly no longer interested in playing the tournament. i'll let you draw your own inferences as to what this type of response indicates.

1. any card may be a false card 2. if your partner psyches a certain bid (or bids) often enough that you consider that it may be a psyche when he bids it, that's alertable. if your partner tends to psyche alot, but with no real pattern, that should be pre-alerted to your opponents. any psyche that fools you as much as it does the opponents is not alertable. 3. a cc is a reference, and only a summary at that. an alert draws attention to a specific bid. when you say 'alert' the opponents are more than welcome to then eyeball your convention card and/or ask you for an explanation - or neither. 4. this is a decision made by the governing body (acbl, in this particular case) that is not specifically against the Laws. 5. again, the governing body has -some- latitude on these things - to know why, you'd have to ask the governing body themselves, or refer to their website/documentation, for an explanation.
-
I'm sorry too, because alerting is a requirement of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge, and crucial to a fair competitive environment. Your attitude also encourages the worst possible outcome, namely that others will start saying "if they don't have to alert, then why should I?"no, my attitude encourages a pro-active approach - if people aren't alerting, don't play with them - which i'll note is identical to the approach you yourself claim to follow later on in your post. however, having said that i will grant that i wasn't cognisant of the fact that this post was in the TD section of the forum and directly relating to a situation where my (and yours) method of avoiding this nonsense isn't applicable. my comments are only in context in the main bridge club.
-
i'm sorry, but i have little sympathy for anyone complaining that bids were not alerted on bbo. you are playing on an international site. caveat emptor. when people sit at your table, or you at theirs it is YOUR responsibility to ask what system they are playing. if the system is unfamiliar to you ensure that they know this and are willing/able to alert their bids. if they are not, play somewhere else. and yes, i know that in theory they're supposed to tell you their system and give alerts without you having to ask - but guess what: there is no governing body to spank them when they don't, so not everyone is going to do it.
-
please. rhetoric like this does nothing to advance the discussion. frances was pointing out how system #2 (as defined in the OP) would be a logistical nightmare if it were applied globally. this is plainly obvious in the context of the entire thread.
-
i'm sorry, but this sounds like a blatant misuse of fred & uday's already limited time. if someone requests a redeal for no reason that you can fathom, just ask - it surely cannot happen often enough to warrant a software change.

GCC Legality Question
scoob replied to Echognome's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think you're ok... except under GCC you are not allowed to have an opening bid promise an unknown second suit. my reg p & i ran into this the first year we played our ♦ system, where we wanted our 2♥/♠ bids to be natural + a minor. we were forced to change it to natural + an outside singleton or void. now, more often than not that contains a minor suit, but not always. -
sounds like you both had the "flash" option enabled to me.

i got a nickels says this thread is only inches away from some censorship of it's own. lol

your best bet is to email matt directly - i believe the email links on the gib website are still current.
