What would be that double, takeout? Openent bid two colors, partner can have only diamonds, but why not to bid them? Or some 6-4 shape? I don't think that only different spade strength is right for double. But penalty is also strange, but with 5-4 and nice hearts, maybe. What is your opinion on double? Well, 2♠ I take as roughly 15-17, 6 cards, about 7 optimistic tricks 3♠ 18+, 6 cards, about 8 optimistic tricks (that are not opened 4♦). But I just guess here, any have better idea?

Thanks all for replies, My idea for not raising to 2♠ (yes, I was the passive south): The probability for partner weak opening is very low, he has standard openning (otherwise 2♣ would be huge underbid). 2♠ are not any nice bid from me, balanced, if unsupported by opennents the club doubleton lies before LHO club doubleton (overruffs danger) and I don't have any other value in hand, except ♦A. IMHO one ace, bad fit and bad distribution is leading to pass after 2♣. The raise from 2♠ to 3♠ was even worser, I have 4 hearts, LHO 5 hearts partner and RHO 2 heart, overruf risk. The clubs were unsupported, there is risk in 5422 with overrufs, still bad fit and just one ace. Pass. There is a lot of posts about p - p - 1♠ - 2♣ - 2♠. Are you not afraid of bad game? I think that best rebid is 3♠ after 2♥, but I'm involved :lol:. This is also the reason of this thread. But from the posts it seams that 2♠ should be said, next time I will.

The second double is necessary to show 4♥ cards, isn't? Otherwise I would show strong hand on clubs (with 4♣ bid). So. imho the second double is mandatory, the pass is wrong (I have made a lot of these what_to_do passes, they are always wrong :P )

If I take Lawrence's I Fought the Law counting: Partner has (maximum) 4 cards in minors that is SST: 13-4 =9 My spade void is makes 9+3 = 12. With 19-21 working points, we can make 6♥. I have 9 WP, can partner have 10-12 WP? I think yes. And if he gets that I'm void in spade he can evaluate his hand quite precisely. And partner can have only 3 minor cards... I had not tried 6♥ only because of some law, but it always helps when any reasonable law says it's not completly wrong.

I like 6♥ bid (unless partner takes it as natural), the meaning is obvious: I want play 6♠ or 7♠ and I have heart void, what is your opinion?

We have no agreement for this bidding. The closest meaning is probably penalty oriented double (but not strictly penalty). IMHO, I think that there is no difference for South bidding against t/o or penalty double (Actually North - with high probability - cannot have hand that defeats 3♠ when South has fit and both five cards in minor).

Just one further question: What if you know that this double is penalty. Do you pass or bid 4♥?

They had not made any psych bid. LHO has ♠A10xxxx (six of them). The bidding was at our table: 2♠ - 3♥ - pass - 3♠ pass - 4♣ - pass - 4♠ pass - 5♥ - all 5♥-4 = -400, luckily they didn't double. After the board I wasn't sure what to do with this type of hands. The majority of you, believes opp the spades and tries pass or 3NT. I think it is good idea. A cuebid. And if you later bid 5S, that's a cuebid. I suppose by 6S partner would get the message. Saying this is natural is making meanings for bids up to fit your hand (and your spades are not nearly good enough for this even if it was natural, why do you want to play in spades after they've bid a weak 2?). Cause they psyched :P

You played 2♥ or 3♥ and the result was 170? If so, it has 50% * 75% = 38% and even this is lucky (you are missing the ♥A instead of ♠A...)

1) The hand is definitely worth limit raise (even if it would be slightly weaker) 2) No, the limit raise should be passed. Nothing worth interrest, except already told issues: 5 hearts and 12 HCP. If this would be enough for partner to bid game, he would bid it.

You don't have SuitPlay at the table. I would suggest always trying to do suit combinations yourself. IMHO: If the question is in forum, the right answer (=SuitPlay) should be prefered to what you can think out at table.

SuitPlay says: Q or small, it is the same. Q gains with K or A by LHO, small to ten wins with K or A by RKO.
