it can be a two way street, to avoid playing 4-3 major fit when we have a 5-4 possibly or 4-4 but next bid would def be mild slam try

and how many times have you had just that and it goes down? <_< for me I find the most consistent annoying bid that GIB makes is a jump to 5♥ or 5♠ I have yet to figure out what it really wants. On above hand you have 9 tricks, generally I would play raise to 3♥ would show and A or K somewhere so really a raise to 4 of game is ok, unless you have a suit you need help in that would give you a reasonable play for six. I would assume north with say A and KQ combination or something along those lines could drive to slam, so we need ruffs or 3 tricks from north to make slam. but I agree, lets program the 5 bid to actually mean something not some nebulous call that says partner I am going to hang you for cue bidding

now my understanding of GIB is new suits are forcing for one round, unless only majors are non forcing....this auction is one that seems to come up with novices unless you are playing it as non forcing. I have since i first started playing in 70's always thought it was 100% forcing

one of those do or dont hands i see nothing wrong with 3NT to start with if going for a reverse fix playing 3♣ heck if north just bids 3NT to start with good chance GIB will lead a ♣ or if it does what it normally does it will lead from Qxx♥

and against good opps it just paves the way for their declarer play better to wait and balance if necessary

I would think it would show a better hand like maybe 14+ hcp not GIB points mildly slam invitational I would assume

GIB did this several weeks ago when playing with me, and i was one of only several that understood what it meant, quite a few people passed 5NT. Now when playing a range like 20-21( mine was 2NT) i could only imagine that to bid 7NT you must have some unbid long suit 5-6 bagger.

yes I understand but like I posted on a earlier post thread header I had similar auction was passed hand then on 5-5 hand bid 4NT and GIB passed. granted I took a unilateral call by bidding 4NT I crapped in my pants when GIB passed. since what you and I have posted earlier this is pretty standard on what most people play over high level pre empts in fact doesnt the old convention card have a spot marked for what doubles mean over 4♥ and 4♠ and what is take out for over 4♠. seems sort of weird that this would be left out of the GIB database.

I hope they (BBO)makes it a little easier to find the matches if they do it again next year. and get D20 to promote it a little more, since the district left the western conference and starting putting out the trumpet I dont think people are as aware of what is going on.

[hv=myhand=M-15059828-1334553973]400|300|[/hv] at my table I doubled they made 5 another person tried the 4NT take out approach which worked 4NT-6 against their vuln game. so how do you get GIB to bid over 4♠ with a two suiter? granted this isnt the greatest two suiter but somewhere there has to be a system for GIB to play. I always thought x=generally penalties 4NT=take out it seems there is no way at this time to play takeout over these types of pre empts.

I always thought classic shape was 4441? no reason not include (43)51 most players would do that, but I guess not GIB especially on a weak hand.

I am curious, if there is no capelletti call will GIB bid 4♠ still or invite with 3♠ call. Seems like GIB upgrades his hand if there has been some sort of call by the opps.

having played in this event 5 or 6 times D20 has always been Portland centered, when it is held somewhere else people in Portland complain about travel. No one else from rest of district 20 wants to travel to Portland.....part of reason Reno is no longer in this District and probably why someday northern california wont be either. hope online play works out

it was interesting that in the NY Times yesterday they never brought up anything about this hand having an appeal. they only reported that Meckstroth broke ranks played ♥Q, Moss didnt take safety play and went down. Made it sound like Meckstroth was genius for his approach when he broke system and played Q from KQ.

i would think it would be pretty hard to put the brakes on at 4♦ if North ended up taking all those bids to bring up that situation.

sort of like board 119 in the finals on vugraph you have 20 hcp tied up in 2 suits where you can only take 7 tricks they were even unluckier they could only take 6 tricks
