  1. Over 4♠ you had the opportunity cue bid either minor, but you (North) didn't = therefore you don't have A of either minor.
  2. Jack Denies, Ten Implies" is a lead agreement whereby the lead of the jack always denies a higher honor, but the 10 or 9 "implies" two higher (non-touching) honors. This convention is also known as '0 or 2 Higher' leads, or coded 9's and 10's. American expert Larry Cohen, however, is less enthusiastic: "This is very good against weak players as you give your partner a useful piece of information. Meanwhile, a poor declarer won't appreciate the inferences available. On the contrary, against good players, this is a horrible method. It gives way too much of an advantage to a decent declarer.
  3. Information available to dummy is not useful, unlike opening leads with coded Js or Ts or 9s. :) These rules often help the opponents, a better strategy is to use coded 9 and 10 against both suit and notrump contracts and to combine it with second highest from a worthless hold also called Roman Mud. Here Jack denies and ten or nine shows zero or two higher. http://youth.worldbr...e-leads-course/
  4. Forexample: ColoursFirst DESIGN: [LPL: 1♠ overcall is an ideal example!] from Roy Hughes Book 1♣ (1♠): Pass Weak or length in ♠(Trap pass) X Values with or without a stopper = balanced 1NT Transfer to ♣ 5+ hcp Opener accepts if min& xx 2♣ Transfer to ♦ 5+ hcp Opener accepts if min & xx2♦ Transfer to ♥ 5+ hcp Opener accepts if min& xx 2♥ 1=4=4=4 2♠ Minors 2NT ♣ + ♥ 3♣ ♦ + ♥ 3♦ GF ♣ 3♥ GF ♣ + 0-1♠ 1-Usplinter 3♠ AKQxxx+ any suit 3NT Minimum GF with all strength in opp suit "These are just ideas, which must look rather arbitrary. What is needed is to take the entire partnership methods, evaluate where transfer technology is appropriate and then apply it in a consistent way." SYSTEMS on over X and 1♦ Interference.
  5. Roy Hughes (Building a Bidding System, 2005) recommends X as balanced (6+ hcp with or without a stopper) and uses transfers as weak, GI, or GF. I have been trying that design in practice on BBO. For example: ColoursFirst DESIGN: [LPL: 1♠ overcall is an ideal example!] 1♣ (1♠): Pass Weak or length in ♠ (Trap pass) X Values with or without a stopper = balanced 1NT Transfer to ♣ 5+ hcp Opener accepts if min & xx 2♣ Transfer to ♦ 5+ hcp Opener accepts if min & xx 2♦ Transfer to ♥ 5+ hcp Opener accepts if min & xx 2♥ 1=4=4=4 2♠ Minors 2NT ♣ + ♥ 3♣ ♦ + ♥ 3♦ GF ♣ 3♥ GF ♣ + 0-1♠ 1-U splinter 3♠ AKQxxx+ any suit 3NT Minimum GF with all strength in opp suit
  6. I never see anyone else with 5 stars to match my five.
  7. Can you give us a quick summary of the approach? Just became aware of the book this week.
  8. Interesting hand. If you had opened 1♦ (preparing for easy rebid) then you have several options over 4♥ and a double for Takeout might be appealing.
  9. Actually, opening leader also uses Smith if the lead is ambiguous, 4th best from no honor. Maybe after seeing dummy he wishes a switch. The proper line of defense will usually tell you what the opening lead should be except for some special lead situations. How The Experts Win at Bridge, 1997, Burt Hall and Lynn Rose-Hall: 1. Forcing Declarer - Lead partnership's strongest suit Declarer has a 2-suited hand Defense has 4 trumps in one hand 4-3 Trump hand Long trump hand can be forced early 2. Active Defense - Lead partnership's strongest suit Any time tricks can go away Declarer's suits are breaking Vigorous bidding (slam interest) Long running suits 3. Passive Defense - Lead top of sequence or worthless suit [might finesse partner] No evidence of strong side suit for declarer Declarer is very strong, dummy very weak Misfit or bad splits in key suits No real suit to lead against NT Defending 6NT and grand slams 4. Cutting down ruffing power - Lead a trump Mere suit preference taken, trump stack, misfits Dummy denied NT, dummy bid 3 suits You control side suit(s), opponents are sacrificing 5. Creating trump tricks for the defense - Lead FROM or TO shortness Short in any unbid suit, long in opponent's side suit (bid AND raised), weak hand Trump promotion or trump uppercutSpecial Situations Gambling NT - Lead an Ace to find dummy's weakness and partner's signal Notrump Slams - Passive lead Suit grand Slams - A trump Special doubles - Varies with the bidding
  10. Just this week I have passed out two hands in 4th seat with ~11 hcp and 7cds or less in the majors. Played 18 games ( 324 hands) 2/324 = 0.7% One hand was not passed out at any other table. No other hands passed out. Strange that it was me that passed out both of them.
  11. Let me count the players (face-to-face) ..... Fishbein, Zia, Welland, Sabine, Hammond (both), Lawrence, Greco, Hampson, Rodwell (both), Meckstroth (both), Sontag, Helms, Wei-Sanders, Chris Moll, Adam Kaplan, Owen Lien, .... Edited Note: 9/1/21: Fishbein and his partner were NOT playing the Fishbein Convention.
  12. NOT TRUE. The first year of screen usage, 1975, the Blue Team beat the USA team. At the half, the score was USA 138 - Blue Team 65. The USA Team was horrible in the 2nd half and lost 149 - 51. Final Score Blue Team 214 - USA 189. The year of the foot soldiers.
  13. Quote from "Love Story" and it is not true. (Love is not having to say you are sorry?)
  14. I have been practicing the BFUN System with two partners for about a month and like most of the design. QP evaluation is a paradigm shift and takes some practice. Together with known distribution it is powerful for slam bidding and sometimes to pick the best game. However, the drawback is that sometimes the honor location can NOT be determined low enough in the bidding.
  15. TABs have gone out-of-favor by most strong club players. Try one of the these two approaches (there are more complicated possibilities): (a) Acceptance of the transfer is a Beta Ask for A+K control total, A = 2, K=1. Responses: 0-1, 2, 3, 4, etc. Opener only uses this if he has no good suit of his own. 10+ controls required for slam if there is no void or singleton in the hand. (b) Acceptance of the transfer is a QP ask where A=3, K=2, Q=1. Reponses by steps: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 etc. This gives a better indication of responder's strength. This can be followed up with an Ace ask. Sometimes you can figure out the exact honors.
  16. BBO Profile photos were activated / enabled today!
  17. THE POWER DOUBLE is part of The Overcall Structure. I have been using it for ten years. One of my favorite conventions. It is great for Precision advocates when the opponents open the bidding. Use the Power Double with a good 15+ hcp hand and use the 1NT overcall for takeout (promises 3-cds or more in the other 3 suits) when 9-14 hcp and short in the opponent's suit. Cheapest response to the Power Double (opponent passes) is Herbert = 0-5 hcp. Use 1NT to show the negative suit with 6+ hcp. http://www.dressing....owerDouble.html http://www.fernside....ucture.html#TPD
  18. Are you familiar with MoTown Minors? Maybe some different ideas? Adam's comments are worthy of your consideration. :) https://www.bridgeba...__1#entry789808
  19. There is a new design for 5-5 positive responses to a strong ♣ opening. Per Barcelona Strong Club, 2017: 1♣ - 2♥ = any 5-5, 11+ hcp 1♣ - 2♠ = touching 5-5, 8-10 hcp 1♣ - 2NT = non-touching 5-5, 8-10 hcp I have played a few years ago a version credited to Eric Rodwell: 1♣ - 2♠ = GF 5-5, 2NT Asks 3♣ = 5♣ & another 5, 3♦ asks 3♦ = 5-5 ♦ + ♥ 3♥ = 5-5 ♥ & ♠ 3♠ = ♠ & ♦
  20. I have a partner who plays the following with good results: 2♦ = 0-5 hcp 0-1 control 2♥ = 6+ hcp 0-1 control 2♠ = 2 controls 2NT = 3 controls (3Ks) 3♣ = 3 controls A+K 3♦ = 4 controls 3♥ = 5 controls This year we have had each of these responses occur with no problem deciding upon the final contract. Unknown is Richard Pavlick's Scheme: Call ........... Meaning 2 ♦..........0-4 HCP (no ace) or 8+ HCP or A+K 2 ♥ .........5-7 HCP or an ace (no A+K) 2 ♠..........any 5 card suit, 2 of top 3 2 NT........any 5 card suit, A-K-Q 3 suit.......6 cards, 2 of top 3 3 NT.........any 6 card suit, A-K-Q 4 suit.........7 cards, 2 of top 3 4 NT..........any 7 card suit, A-K-Q http://www.rpbridge.net/7g72.htm
  21. Some Precision players use transfers over an opening bid of 2♣ which is 6+♣ and no 4cd M. Terence Reese proposed this in 1981 in his paperback book: Precision Bidding and Precision Play, Cornerstone Library, NY. I used this approach at the 2-level and opener with 2cd support accepts the transfer. If not, he can show a M stopper at the 2-level, bid 2NT with a maximum, or bid 3♣ with a minimum. Several Precision Pairs only use the transfer at the 3-level as a GF.
  22. https://bobbybridge....abroman2005.pdfhttps://bobbybridge....abroman2005.htm https://bobbybridge....abroman2005.pdf 2♣ opener: 6♣ or 4♣ + 5cd M The 2♣ opening is not forcing, though it is rarely passed in an uncontested auction. The 2♦ response promises at least 6 HCP and two cover cards, it is a relay asking opener to further describe his hand. With a long major, opener rebids the major, other rebids show long clubs (2nt=max, 3♣=min, 3x is singleton with running clubs). Responses of 2♥ or 2♠ are natural, not forcing and warn of a possible misfit. With a nearly solid six card major and around 7 sure playing tricks, you may prefer to open and jump in the major. Keep in mind that if you start with 2♣ you can only show the major with a 2 level rebid, there is no jump to show strength, and the 2M rebid is not forcing.
