What to do over opps 3S preempt
msjennifer replied to phoenix214's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
How can one find out what partners hand is? With the hand that you have given 3NT is also cold. One can not assume a particular hand with P. He may be 1444 eg x,Axxx,KQxx,KJxx I which case perhaps only 5 Clubs is the makeable contract,if you make a TOD now,but P will bid 4 H with this hand. Considering all this 3NT is a less damaging bid and who knows P with the hand given by you may bid 4 D..It is all ifs and buts ! -
An expert is supposed to know Lebensohl so Bid 2 NT And convert partners 3 club bid to 3Di. If you suspect his expert level then simply bid an easy passable 3Di.

Don't open 4-4-4-1 hands with 12 or 13 points
msjennifer replied to PhilG007's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
12 HCP,2 Defence tricks and 7 losers .Whats the big point ? Open 1D and over 1S rebid 2Club. Interchange the minor suit holdings and then open 1C and rebid 1NT over partners 1S.If partner bids 1NT over 1C ,then he has 4 cards in clubs and so just sign of in 2 C. If bid with these principles then at least one gets the wanted lead when opponents (LHO)buy the contract. -
Raising the suit of opponent

It could be DAB,DYB(describe your hand further) or the cheapest cue bid.As to what it is will be clear with his next bid. -
IMP, E-W Vul, what do you bid?
msjennifer replied to Wayne_LV's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
With no agreement ,I feel opener wants to show a nonreversing maximimum hand I.e. 17 or so working HCP and asking me if I can offer decent help in heart suit.Since I have it I am not ashamed to bid 4 D now.Although some have suggested a bid of 3C ,I think it will be a more confusing bid not telling partner of excellent values in hearts at all.In Super Precision system opener would have opened this hand of his as1Club (16 plus) and the problem would not exist. In that system, opener NEVER bids the Fourth-suit-forcing artificially. -
2 call or not 2 call
msjennifer replied to ehhh's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1H is out of question.I do not like to open 2 H in second position with honor to three or xxxx in spades. In 3rd seat yes I will open 2H. -
Why not see his/her profile? Surely then one knows if it is simple Blackwood or Roman Key Card Blackwood.I assume that he is prepared to play in some 6/7 contract and he is ready for the 5D or any other response. He knows that opener may have only a doubleton club. One can not have a need to have a specific HCP requirements, unless the opening bid is 1/2 NT in which case i4NT is usually played as quantitative since there is Gerber [for Aces] and other pathways available to bid 4 NT later as simple orRKCB. As regards the second question ,4NT is Quantitative also when partner finding no established fit in any suit has signed of in say 3NT and asks him to bid six if he has the maximum HCP as the range revealed by him earlier.Opener "may"further bid 5 NT to show middle of the range provided there is prior agreement to that effect.Pairs also play 1/2 NT --4 NT as quantitative as I said earlier.

Playing standard system ,without any fancy gadgets, since 2 D shows a limited hand ,there in no safe way to avoid 3NT with a 3244 balanced hand.Just bid 3NT go down and forget the hand. No one can see but partner may produce Kxx in heart.Or in some deal even J xx may suffice.

Must play Flannery for such hands.2D multi or weak in diamonds are useless against good opponents. We bid Flannery (12/16)and a relay of 2NT with 11 plus.Opener bids 3 C with 12/14 and 3D with 15/16.So 2D-2Nt-3D-3NT.With less HCP responder if fitting in either major uses the gadget of LTC and bids the fitting major at appropriate level. With big hands responder first uses 2NT bid to get clarification and then makes forcing bids to bid a small or grand slam.Openers 3H/S over the relay show various hands but all further theory is beyond the question posed here.

e impression that if the major suit holdings are reversed then one should open open 1S.?The answer given does not pertain the questionThe question is clear and does not ask whether one will be able to defend 2S etc.The answer is a little fear oriented. It also gives th

The question asked is"pass or open?".My answer is I shall open 1H. Whether one applies the losing trick count (6 losers) or total points count 12 plus10 = 22 and HCP count,I am convinced that this hand deserves to be opened 1H.

??? after partner doubles a preempt
msjennifer replied to silvr bull's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Without the D-K10xx ,the bid is 3S and even with it the bid is same? 3NT might be cold .And there is no surety that 3S will be passed by partner. The best way was told by one of club level players is" take a pause and bid a slow 3 Spade".Pass may or may not work out well, who knows? -
We also play it as one round forcing whether a passed hand or not.we also don't like to twist and turn the system. In my opinion any system that proves right in 90 percent of unopposed bidding is an excellent bidding system..Any system in the world can not bid all hands perfectly.Garozzos Super Precision system comes very near to the objective.
-
With a regular partner, since all the HCP are in majors I open the given hand 1S in all positions.Reverse the holding in major suits and I open 1H. As per this scheme you get the wanted opening lead and also avoid rebid problems in an approach oriented standard system.
-
Whether playing a standard system or Precision,a 2 C response is forcing and promises one more bid.I shall bid 2 H which is NOT a reverse bid since partner has forced me.If over my 2H partner bids 2S,I will bid 3H showing four spades (2S may be natural or 4 th suit bid).Partner will now know that my hand is 4432 or 4441 and obviously if 4432 then the hand is limited to 14HCP at most since with 15 the opening bid would be 1NT.I do not show five card heart suit when I respond 3 H over 2S as with five hearts I would open 1H and not 1D.Of course !partner CAN have a decent 12HCP although he is a passed hand.
-
A very tough hand indeed.N cannot double because it is always a take out double, usually, showing strength plus a four card honor headed support for hearts or could be a monster with double suited one.It almost never shows this type of hand.As for S ,holding this hand AND knowing fully well that East is preempting ,I can say that he has a very agonising decision to take before passing.15 percent blame for not bidding 4 hearts and the rest 85 percent to the circumstances.
-
3NT by East is a silly ,if not idiotic ,bid on Easts hand.It can come only from a person who wants to play the hand himself..Playing A standard system one must start with 2 Clubs which allows partner to describe his hand to a T.I can not agree with the 3 NT response even when playing Precision, wherein 1S shows not more than 15 HCP.The 3 NT bid must have infuriated West who bid 6 Heart to teach a lesson to East.Of course East could have continued idiotically by bidding 6 NT ,which he later could have said " partner I was trying for a Top".As George Coffin would have said,"Morons like East do exist!".Just by the way ,the correct response playing Wei's Precision system on Easts hand is a forcing bid of just 1 NT.
-
I know that the tale will sound fictitious but here it is! Today I gave the responders hand to my favourite partner also playing Standard and LTc and SST and LST. I opened 1Spade and it may surprise us all HE PASSED.When I asked him to clarify his pass,he said " I have only 4 working HCP,and so I can give you only one trick.I have NINE losers and no fit.I can compete later upto 2 spade. You have not opened 2 Clubs which is the bid with a nine winners hand, nor have you opened 2 NT.1S is hardly allowed to stand so if you indeed have a double suited strong hand you will bid it.I can then decide my action." By the way,he is not cognisant of any internet bridge being too old(81 years) and so please don't have any suspicions in your mind that perhaps he knew the hand.
-
The point is, " Is a jump shift non reverse 100% game forcing opposite a partner with bare 5/6 HCP and no three card spade support or no four card heart support" ?Indeed partner should .on the given hand bid 3 spade and opener should pass it fully believing partner.Even with LTC which is applied when a 8 plus card fit exists gives the same result ,(although there is no such fit ),18 -(6+9)= 3. Even playing LST,opener requires three cover cards for bidding game.Just give partner SQ,HK, and a minor suit queen, instead of club AJ, and it becomes a decent 4 spade contract.

What is 3NT?
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I can't imagine a hand that will justify a 3 NT rebid after a 2/1 response.Perhaps he doesn't want partner to be declarer in 3NT. A hand which has 18/19 HCP will bid 2NT then 4NT over 3NT rebid by partner. In olden times,a 2/1 response was forcing only upto 2 NT or 3 of a suit.Perhaps, in those days it did show 18/19 HCP.Today with a partner playing the old system I will make a reverse bid in the stronger major if I have a club support and a goodish diamond suit.If I do have club support then I count the losers as per LTC and not only the HCP alone,so that we may reach a slam with a suitable hand. -
Would you bid at unfav?
msjennifer replied to andrei's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
A 2NT overcall is not a rational bid on this hand.Normally, this bid at unfavourable vulnerability MUST promise at least TWO defensive tricks and this hand has barely ONE.Without a previous discussion a new partner will ask you "Are you ready for a penalty when you suggest playing at THREE level with this trash?.".However, a simple 1Heart overcall DOES NOT promise anything in defence and helps partner to begin with a Heart lead if LHO lands up as declarer in a 3 NT contract. The simple overcall MAY refrain them from bidding 3NT. -
If playing 2/1 as game forcing,it is dangerous to open this hand in 1st or 2nd seat unless playing Drury or reverse Drury in all seats. However, in 3rd seat after two passes this is a clear cut 1Spade opener.
