Balanced Hand Change
msjennifer replied to pecohen's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
It was okay for fan tunes since they could easily find out if/ which suit is singleton. -
What's the worst hand?
msjennifer replied to kenrexford's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
The question asker must be playing opposite a partner who plays "Papa Mamma" bridge and who must have never even heard of any conventions or gadgets.I expect something like A,x,KQxxx,AKQxxx and would have bid 7D in a flash to make the cold contract or to teach him a lesson or two,if he produces a different hand with no chances.Of course, with such a hand 2C opening is obvious but perhaps not "Papa Momma" style. As regards the worst hand ,it could be S-Void,H-x,D-xxxxxx,C-AKQxxx. -
Can this suit be played for 5 tricks?
msjennifer replied to el mister's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Since only the club suit is shown, there can not be a sure shot way but to finesse the 7 next time. The phenomenon of restricted choice goes in its favour. But it depends upon who the LHO is and what is his usual style when defending. In a normal BBO game that's the play.I know only the great giants of bridge but if my LHO is someone like Hamman.or Garozzo(Sillafu),I shall be like the cat in the video as then whatever you play may turn out to be wrong.Anyhow, my answer is Same I.e. Finesse the 7. -
Correct play for 3 tricks
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
This depends upon the earlier bidding and plays to the earlier tricks. they may offer you some clue whether you play a small and finesse the 10 or as Kenberg suggested small towards the jack .Without any clues, I prefer to play small towards the jack. -
A contract of 2D is possible theoretically, A Flannery 2D opening is passed by his partner. An Acol strong 2D is passed. A 2D multi opening is passed by responder. An inverted 1D-2D is passed out.A 2D transfer bid is passed by 1NT opener. A Precision 2D opening is passed .So also if aBlue Club 2D opening is passed out. There may be a few more but in actual practise the opponents will always try to push you to three level.

My dad showed a hand from a big tournament..The genuine expert on lead against a four hearts contract holding A9 of spades led the NINE of spades.Dummy came down with KJ10x of spades.Put into a guess at trick one, nobody could blame declarer for misguessing when he played the 10.But he was not prepared for the worst.RHO won the Queen and returned the suit.LHO won the Ace and duly got a ruff when partner won the Ace of hearts and returned a spade as declared held xxx. This was a real Expert lead.On the other table the contract was made easily when spades were led but the Ace was led and returned the nine.Declarer won the King and played trumps.RHO won the ace and cashed the SQ and retuned a spade but LHO was not able to overruff when declarer ruffed high enough.A real "expert" Player making an"expert "lead.!

On BBO many self rated "expert" are in reality " expert in making comments".A self rated "world class" played with an"expert" and when he went down in a 3NT contract when intermediates would have reached six spade,a cold contact ,he turned out to be a "World class with 'cl' silent".

Overcalling a weak 2 with two long minors
msjennifer replied to Liversidge's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
I am not very sure ,if,Roman two suited overcalls can be used perhaps with some modifications,if at all necessary. -
inspite of the fact that most responders will bid 2D if partner opens 2 C, I would like to insist that it is a bad policy to make it a waiting bid.If one has a positive hand, say 8plus HCP and 2 controls, and a five carder biddable major or minor it is best to bid it immediately.Whereas a 2D bidder has to make two bids to show such a hand(5 card major)It is best to adopt Precision system responses! .If one uses such responses opener immediately, with a fit, will know responder has KQxxx. It now does not matter which King he has, as any will do,7 Spades is not difficult to bid with this information.

And what does he bid if he does not have the fifth spade.?How do you propose to continue the bidding further ?
-
It is sensible to ignore such lengthy posts which convey hardly any meaning at all. Yes,everyone knows there are are 13 tricks in contract bridge. It is absolutely unclear what the OP wishes to convey!

Double and then 2S showing 18 good to 21HCP. Thereafter,Lebensohl.(Partner can have anywhere between 0 to 9 HCP).

Bidding discussion over the table while in the auction
msjennifer replied to Geoff103's topic in General BBO Discussion
Reading all what all have said so far ,I have come to the conclusion that 90p.c.think that all BBO tournaments are just a tea table game.As per laws of duplicate bridge ,conversation of any kind is forbidden once the bidding starts ,with the exception of asking the meanings of alerted bids by the opponents only and not by bids made by the partner.if this is violated then director can be called and after judging the severity of crime he can always give an adjusted score to the innocent pair and penalise the guilty pair appropriately and with a warning.I have serious doubts about when and where these laws are going to be enforced. The players have to describe the system ,gadgets and conventions they use instead of just writing SAYC or Precision or Polish club etc in their profile. If this is made compulsory it will avoid many bitter situations. -
I've been here before
msjennifer replied to Jinksy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I have answered 2 H.This hand although it has 8 losers as played in Hearts is not worth bidding Drury as partner will be expecting a slightly better hand.Opponents are surely going to lead trumps at every opportunity.I know nothing about partners hand which may be a weakish one.If the pair plays SST and LST then bidding will not pose a problem. If partner does show a singleton ( 3D shows that and a six loser hand) then it means he wants 3 cover cards in the remaining suits so sign off in 3 H.Lastly, who knows, partner may have four cards in spades with a 6 loser hand and will show them over 2H and then 4S will be easily reached. If the pair is using Flannery then 2D-P- 4S is too easy or even six in some cases. But I have presumed they don't play Flannery. -
What is 3 Diamonds?
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I have serious doubts that, anywhere except club standard noncompetitive game,Stayman is played as game forcing.Even Beginners now know extended Stayman and other bids.Since Stayman is also used with weak hands, the No trump openers hand described by dickiegera is not at all suitable for a 3D bid.I will expect a hand like KQxx,AQxx,xx,AQx ,for a 3D bid.It is normally, and I repeat normally, the intention of Stayman to make the no trump hand the declarer. In fact, that's why the transfer bids are used. And that is why I beg to differ with The Abbess.I do not like to suppress a 5 card major in favor of a NT unless the suit is weak and there are tenaces in the other suits which require to be protected. -
Me and my regular partner.after the given bidding, use Jump to 4C ( if p has started with 1D and 4D if he has started with 1C) as RKC for spades, and depending upon his answer ,either sign off in 4 Spades or continue further(if all key cards are confirmed) with SPIRAL and stop in six or bid the grand with ease.

What is 3 Diamonds?
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
The 3D bid shows a fit for both majors, maximum hand and no wastage in diamond suit.It asks responder to bid his major suit. There can occur certain responding hands where the responder can toss it back to opener by bidding 4D.After all, if non vul.,the opponent bidding 2 D may be putting a spanner in the works.I shall bid only 3H with the present hand. There are responder hands where with the information given by the 3D bid ,can make it easier to bid even a slam in a major suit. And why not? As regards the statements made by Caitlynne, the less said the better. -
Some People Think I'm Bonkers
msjennifer replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sir,you have given the exact clarification and given a very illustrative hand to all those who play multi 2D ,without knowing the further development, just for the heck of it. -
Some People Think I'm Bonkers
msjennifer replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
HAHa.Well! jogs ,for one ,did bid 2S and expected his partner to pass.I politely suggest that those, who think that 2S is a sign off ,better switch to weak two in majors rather than play multi 2D. -
Some People Think I'm Bonkers
msjennifer replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
2H. Some may bid 2S but partner's bid is going to be 3H,unless his hand is a strong NT .Think twice if one wants to play in 2 H,3H or 3S. Those who bid 2S must keep in mind that it has no relation to the number of cards held in spade suit.In a way the 2S bid shows a dislike for spade but willingness to play in 3 H if that is partners suit. With no desire to play in 3H one just bids 2H and that's the end of it. -

Any way to defeat the interference?
msjennifer replied to hirowla's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
With a 6 loser hand West has an easy straight forward 3S bid.East having 6 losers ,as played in spade, has no worries in bidding 4S.The opponents overcall may create a doubt that suits may not break favorably .So six is not that easy, although LTC suggests a slam 18-(6+6)=6,which holds good in most cases but ,on second thoughts ,perhaps not in this deal. -

Could anyone explain what is over caller's partner supposed to bid holding xxxx,Qxxx,AKxx,x ?.Did some one say 4S and not 3C?.A game is cold unless of course over callers LHO holds all four missing trumps.A 3H bid by overcaller and 4S is automatic.
-
Partners all points must be working points .He forced you to bid 3 S ..Why did he not bid himself? The answer is that he does not know the strength of overcall.Your overcall may be based on lead direction and could be made even missing the HK.My bid is 3 H to show a concentration in Heart suit and a very good overcall. Now whatever he bids is final. In the second sequence, which I refuse to accept ,my answer is Pass since he could have redoubled also and forced me to decide.
