Question lebenshol 2NT after reverse
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
The lebensohl can be used in many other bidding situations also. However, only fixed partnerships can play all of them.It is a boomerang when playing with an unknown partner. -
Question lebenshol 2NT after reverse
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
A pair playing 2/1 GF or a pair playing 2/1 forcing only upto 2NT or 3 of a suit both can certainly employ lebensohl .In the first case the 1NT by responder can have upto 11/12(bad)HCP with no support. Now if the 2NT rebid can be used to define the range upto 8 HCP and any other direct minor suit 3 bid to show a long suited minor and 9 /11 range as lebensohl bids why not?Same can be applied to second case to show 5/7 HCP with or without only a doubleton support by 2NT( forcing lebensohl) and use other bids, albeit appropriately,to show 8/10 HCP.It is not possible to give details of describing different holdings by appropriate bids using lebensohl in such sequences for want of space. -
To force or not to force
msjennifer replied to CamHenry's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I have already denied a five card spade suit.Agreed ,partner does not have four spades.Certainly, he " can "have three good spades.Considering the bidding so far ,now ,if partnership agreement is 3C by me is extended Stayman GF then does it not mean that 2S by me will be a competitive bid to play in a Moysian fit ?After all 2H may turn out to be cold and pass or double for penalties wifi be ,(1)allowing opponents to play with 25 HCP with us or ,(2)a game swing. If,2S can be treated as competitive nonforcing bid and partner" hopefully" bids 2NT then 3NT might make.I,for one, would surely like to make this slight worthwhile adjustment in a rather "rigid" Stayman as is used by majority today. I also gave a thought of bidding 3D to show 4/5 in S/D ,but the D suit is too weak and likely to be taken as GF. -
A Bidding Question
msjennifer replied to Adam1105's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I fully agree with Kenberg. The negative double by opener is ,with full respect to Cyberyeti, rather old fashioned today and for those, who sadly do not play support double,a pass is natural. Therefore, the problem has now occurred .3H bid will exactly show a three card heart support. How the further bidding goes will decide the next bids. The double fit being there I shall certainly accept any invitation from partner and bid the appropriate game. -
no trump hand evaluation methodology
msjennifer replied to bravejason's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Playing a weak no trump,it is unwise to open a flat 4333 hand with 3Aces as 1NT.Same applies when two suits are wide open.Playing a standard system, and Red vs White ,one International opened 1 NT holding xxx,AKQx,AKJx,xx .All Pass.Going 3 down and minus 300 got the zero it deserved in the match point pairs.True, the opponents were making 3S. Now is it bad luck or unwise opening bid ?All others opened the hand 1 D and opponents played in spade partials..Using a rule of 20 or any other number does not help when opening a hand as 1 NT.A 1NT is passed out if partner holds a flat 6/7 HCP and goes down when a contract of two In a 4/4 suit is on ice if one had opened the hand 1C/D. -
I shall put the problem other way.Suppose NS were silent and West opens 1 NT (15-17). Now what ? I feel at least a few will bid 4H/S may not be directly but indirectly with an invitational 3 H after a transfer to spade.

The hand has 8 losers when played in a major. This hand has passed once already.West has doubled and should have a decent hand at three level .It Is not too much to expect 6 loser hand (HCP don't matter) 8+6 =14 and 18-14=4. So East should bid 4 D.May not work once in a while, but at least there is some logic behind it.

This hand in my opinion deserves a pass.Opponents are vulnerable against not and yet RHO has opened 3H ! If I bid 4D does it describe a good hand ready to play in four diamonds or does it show a desire to sacrifice? My opinion is the first choice. The third reason for bidding 4 diamonds is prevent LHO from biding 3S,3NT.( partner is not going to lead a diamond when you pass. The most likely lead is a spade or rarely a club). What to bid and with what intentions when a minor suit comes into picture is unclear.LHO's life is also not easy .I may consider to bid 5 D if LHO bids a game and partner passes.Double shows a four card spade suit when it is made ,in the second direct seat, at 3 level. My hand does not have a decent three card support for spades and since ,presumably,RHO is short in spades they are going to be stacked with LHO.And after a a double partner bids 4 Club what am I supposed to do.? I feel it is 'safer' to pass right now and decide later presuming the opponents are strong ones.Lastly, I don't mind losing a hand once In a while.! .

Yes.This is the correct way when playing Crowhirst.

panic as responder
msjennifer replied to onoway's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
One Heart.Albeit with a tremor ! -
It is very difficult to imagine partners hand consistent with his bidding.A 1S by him is a non-forcing bid.He did not know my hand until I bid 2D showing a six card suit and no preference for clubs or spades.(by passing or bidding 2C).However,he also knows now that the diamond suit must be a decent two level playable suit. But by bidding 2NT ,I presume that he has xx in diamond and his hand is something like ????,AQ,xx,????? And hence he invited .With such a good Diamond holding I am certainly going to accept his invitation and bid 3NT. However with an unknown partner ,who knows, whatever you bid may turn out wrong and on top someone will be impudent enough to say "Did not I warn you that I don't like diamonds ,however shiny you think they are ,at least in this deal?"

Four Suit Transfer Alert
msjennifer replied to jerdonald's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes.Indeed the rules book now clearly lays down that a 2C Stayman bid need not be alerted as also any bid above 3NT need not be alerted. -

Sorry.I don't like to bet as I never do it.I think I have answered all reasons in my reply. It is not possible to reply in detail as you have not enumerated those dozen reasons.Just wait and watch.

Four Suit Transfer Alert
msjennifer replied to jerdonald's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
2C asks for a major only if it is bid as Stayman .There is no full stop because 2C is " not necessarily" Stayman. Many modernists play it as a relay to find out the range of opener ,whether he holds a minimum or a maximum. There are quite a few who play 2C as Baron(suits up the line). Some old style players play 2C followed by 3C to show a weak long clubs hand. One has ones choice. No one can forcibly say that 2 C is always Stayman.I alert all my unnatural bids over 1NT (2C/D/H/S/NT etc ) since they are all artificial bids and opponents have every right to know the full explanation. -
Double. And why not? Everybody plays Lebensohl these days.If he bids 2NT ( Lebensohl request to please bid 3 Clubs) I Shall bid 3 C as requested and then if he bids 3D (shows a weak hand hand less than 9HCP and sign off in D )then shall continue with 4C.If ,over my requested ,3C he bids 3S which now shows spades and 8/9 plus HCP the again 4C leaving enough space for cue bids as now 4 C is GF.with clubs. Remember, that 2S response by P (( cheapest bid) shows 0 to 8 HCP.and 4plus Spades. If unfortunately no Lebensohl then I don't mind showing the single suited( No guarantee about spades) hand with 3 /4 C depending on his response.I am certainly not going to miss a game/slam if partner shows some life. After all,if partner has a well placed DK and CQ to go with it 5C is on Ice. I feel that the hand is overstrong for a simple overcall of 3C.

A column "How would you rule ?"was/is published practically every month in Bridge World magazine, and is useful for all. Please note that I am in no way canvassing for any literature,

Dummy has to keep mum all the way till the last card is played and the deal is over.Dummy can then call the director and point out any revoke made during the play of the deal.Dummy can not call the director during the course of play. The only exception is if any of the opponents disallows the inherent right of dummy to see a card played by an opponent till dummy's card is face up.Once upon a time this did happen when a rude opponent said "you are dummy so don't speak anything"as I asked his face down card to be shown as dummy's card was still face up.The director then scolded him forthwith and asked him to show me his card played to that trick. Many players do not care or rather are too lazy to go through the "Rules Book of WBF" .Directors Rule Book specially prepared all over should also be read thoroughly if one wishes to be a director in the future and for general knowledge.

ATB - Hopeless 3NT
msjennifer replied to perko90's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Both 2 C overcall (a bit underpowered) and the 3NT bid (which is a far worse bid) need to be blamed for want of understanding of basics of bidding in a competitive auction. -
How to bid this?
msjennifer replied to 661_Pete's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Your suggestion is wrong because 1D - 3 H is a splinter bid showing a singleton or void in heart with Diamonds as agreed suit and slam oriented .What do you bid on Axx,x,KQJxxx,Kxx when P opens 1 D? Or do you suggest a direct 4NT on such a hand.? -
How to bid this?
msjennifer replied to 661_Pete's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
We all know that 3D is a passable bid.If it is so then I can not understand how 3H a rebid in the same suit can be taken as game forcing. What is responder supposed to bid on xxx ,AQJ9876,void,xxx? In this particular hand if a game force is to be made then it should be in a new suit.Actually I don't mind bidding 4C .If partner has xx or xxx in hearts he will bid 4H.I don't mind playing in 5D with a singleton in spades and xx in D.I am certainly going to bid a game on this holding even at the cost of bypassing 3 NT. -
Very strange bidding Stayman on a flat 3433 ,And then bidding 4 hearts with 4 rags in the heart suit.
