  1. Hi, Italian Cue bids and Economic cue bids are they the same thing, can someone explain them to me and and any differences there may be between them, with pros and cons. any links would be most helpful Thank you
  2. Hi, I am Wayne, 45 English threw and threw, badly edukated, spilling is not my strong point. I started playing bridge in yahoo for 3 years, then I came to BBO about 9 months ago and realised that in yahoo social lounge I was not playing bridge I was playing some other game that resembles whist. I had to start back from the old proverbial drawing board, I have some horrendous habits to get rid of, but I have been lucky enough to get Paulg (the man is a saint) to mentor me through the 5th chair foundation (the wife wished it was the elcetric chair foundation). Also I have just started a partnership with 1valeria a very nice Italian lady and we are now getting lessons in 2/1 from Bob Mcphee, I have been playing 2/1 for about 3 weeks now (22 june 2004). And numerous sessions watching the likes of Shep Cascade and plenty of others I enjoy kibbing some of the experts, I love the Vu graph and I am amazed at the friendliness of the large majority of people. I am also a grandad, I have a 18 month old granddaughter who is learning bridge with me as she loves sitting on my lap when I play. Bridge is the most interesting thing I do these days and I hope I when I die, I fall off a chair in the middle of a hand ) (a 2!C opener would be nice)
  3. Just a quick idea for a ratings system, based on two ratings. Learner, has not quite mastered the triple flip flop, restrictive choice multiple squeeze Arroagnt so and so who knows everything or just make friends and judge people as you find them, mark them as friend and insert comments, i.e. potential partners or decent opponents, good fun player, etc, anyone you dont like you can mark as an enemy. Anyone that comes up with a site that good probably does not need a rating system. Alternatively design a bridgeplaying site yourself, make it free and see if you can create and administer a rating system Good luck with the later, I kinda like the rating system, but then I dont think I suffer from delusions of grandeur, nor do I have an over inflated opinion of my own abilities, nor am I so elietist that I want to pronounce to all how good or bad I am, play bridge with me cos you enjoy bridge or my company, either is good for me
  4. my ex wife deals most of my hands, so think yourself lucky
  5. try some of freds free bridgemaster deals in the explore section there is a beauty in level 4 I think it is hand 5 that will show you an end play
  6. Hi, I would love to play in a teams match also, I have never really tried them, so if anyone is stuck for a few players consider inviting me, also poss my reg pard may be able to play also ;))
  7. Perhaps you could change the rating system t something like beginner, very little knowledge, but a nice person beginner, very little knowledge and I have haemeroids so I wont sit at the table very long intermediate, I would like to play the game seriously and learn but I make stupid mistakes, BUT I am kind to my children and I like people Advanced, I consider I am reasonable at the game, I make the odd error and I am learning advanced techniques, yet I am not really qualified to teach. Expert, nice person Expert, complete jerk Expert and I only want to play with Experts and above Expert, I like to play socially, when I want a serious game I can log in another ID with serious games only on it Expert, I am not really an expert, I just want to ruin it for other people World Class, i.e nices ones like Rado, Tobice Stanned (to name a few) and last but not least PRIVATE, well not really sure why anyone wants to be that secretive as no one needs to know who you are anyway Ratings for playing ability don't really matter, it is better if we give ratings for manners stability and ability to be nice to people
  8. Perhaps the Death Penalty could be introduced to satisfy your craving for speed rainy hahahahaha
  9. Hi all, I was sitting here wondering what makes a good bridge player. What sort of qualities do you need What sort of qualities do you NOT need You may not have an opinion on what makes a good bridge player, but you may have some opinions about what makes a bad one, I am interested in your answers, so please don't be shy lets hear your opinion.
  10. I recently had this auction and made a pigs ear of it, my partner was new to me, can some of you give me your thoughts please and advice. P - P - 2♠ - 2NT 3♠ - 4♣ - P - 5!C My Partner bid 2nt (this was a strong hand with AKxx spades x hearts KJxx diamonds and AQxx clubs) I cant find the movie doh!!!!!!! I was the one bidding 4 clubs I took the bid of 2nt as michaels hence my bid of 4!C I had a hand with 4 clubs 4 dianonds 4 hearts and 1 spade and a few points by the way and I probably should have shut up (but that was never my strong point) I would like to know A, can 2nt be michaels with out agreement? or with agreement? B, with p's hand, 17 points strong spades should she pass and let me balance (I assume that with openers partner passing that would allow me to balance If openers partner does raise then we would get in a good penalty double after I pass and it is back to my p with nice spades and nice hand? anyway I hope I have explained myself well enogh and if I find the hand I will post it, his is the best my memory can do for now Thanks in anticipation of your answers
  11. Hi, in the last week or so I have left 3 tourneys abruptly, two when I was playing badly and one when I was not (must have been a lucky day) if I recall correctly, I was subbed into two of these and the original partner just upped and left because he did not want to play with anyone but his own p, this in my mind is a bit selfish and that in it self deserves a ban. My point is, I subbed to help out, I have had to reboot as my batteries in my mouse went dead and I did not expect them to lock up on me, the delay light on my mouse lasts a few minutes thats all, I have no issue with a weeks ban even if I dont consider it my own fault. One thing I would like to be able to do is to apologise to the TD and the partner that I leave, this is very difficult when the TD is invisible all the time and you can't chat to the pard you left, I would even be happy to sub again as would a lot of people that I have directed and come back after a brief disconnection, let people back in the tourney to sub if they wish and if the sub is agreeable let the original partner back to play with his original P. This is not as hard as it seems and it is something that will keep regular pairs coming back and some subs won't mind being bounced about, you may end up needing less subs if the original partners can come back. The only issue is educating the subs that they may be in and out a few times, that may not be as unacceptable to helpful people as you think
  12. The problem with teaching a system different from the national norm is that you limit your beginners' choice of partners when they play outside of class. This is what Mike Star said, I have been playing bridge for 4 years 3 in yahoo land and in a social lounge with absolutely no understanding of the game, we played for fun and most of us dont have a clue about the correct way to play. That said in the last year I have been playing here and I now have a mentor and he is great and has done me the world of good (Paulg), the problem I have is I have only ever played on the net, not in real life (well almost), What Mike said is exactly my experience, we play ACOL in the UK as I am sure you are aware. I learnt SAYC, I can't play ACOL and this really restricts my options for joining a club and finding a real life partner, so start basics and teach a system that will be the best for the pupils to take it further in their country.
  13. I doubt you would gain anything here by that as a lot of people tend to exagerate their own abilities, so it will still be hit and miss
  14. Well on a light hearted note. I would like to tell you why you should never trust a Danish Person or allow one to play in your tournaments, as this is going back quite a few months, I had just started to direct the odd tournament and I was trying to be friendly to all, so I started to learn to say hi in various languages, Danish was one of the languages that I had no idea about, SO, I asked a good (EX) Danish friend, how to great people correctly in Danish. "Hejsa Store Patter" I tried it for a few weeks before some one kindly told me what it meant
  15. If you are unsure, I thought you had the right to ask what any bid is, so if that is the case, you have no one to blame but yourselves, for not asking or bidding before you have an answer
  16. Hi Phil, I would be very interested, I try (and that is the operative word) to play standard count and attitude and standard discards, though from what I have read and tried I quite like Lavinthal discards which seem a lot better to me, some recommend play it only against NT (I have no idea why) as it appears to be a sensible approach to trump contracts as well, though I guess there will be debate about that. Anyway what ever you decide to do, I know there will be some willing people at your table in the near future :)) Thanks for your time, we appricate it a lot
  17. when I use control W and make the screen smaller, I get half the green movie button missing from view, I run XP home with athlon xp2000 and Nvida 420 graphics card. if that make a difference
  18. would like to add 8 to that list, in my hand reviews you can keep track of peoples scores, is it not possible to keep track and list disconnections from tourneys, that way we can see repeat offenders and they can be warned before they are barred from all tourneys (just thought)
  19. I thought Fred put up BBO basic and BBO advanced systems for casual partnerships, I may be wrong (it has never happened before, but there is always a first time)
  20. I would like to put my opinion in here. when I first played at BB and tourneys started, I started to run some, just to allow some of the few directors the oportunity to play in them, I am one of the people that would not be able to direct tourneys if any standards are set, as you are quite correct some TD's like myself are not competant to run them, as perhaps they should be run at a club. The observation I am going to make is, this is a free site and whilst some users seem to be getting more and more demanding, I think the software changes that are coming in, whereby you pay to play with a proffesional standard director, are great, this will allow the people who obviously demand more from the directors that run tourneys, the opportunity to participate in the environment that they want. One advantage of tournaments that I see as extremely positive, is the chance to play with a huge selection of people that you may never meet, this in turn can turn into friendships and casual partnerships, I enjoy the tourneys I go in and if I dont get an adjustment , then so be it, I realise what a pain it can be and I accept this. One mistake I do make is making my tournaments to big for me to handle or not getting any help, I never like to ask, so I suppose that is a flaw in my thinking, I would state on my tourneys my level of competence and the fact that no one will get adjustments, BUT, does anyone read the table description (I don't think so) another way of letting people know is to message the lobby before it starts (does everyone have ignore lobby chat turned off???????). So a possible solution to table descriptions (sorry Uday this may be a hard one to do) is to have a pop up box come up when some one registers a team and they have to click a check box to accept the TD's conditions, that way no one can say the did not realise and that also gives you the option not to join a tourney that does not come up to your expectations.

  22. I can run tourneys and I can do adjustments, I have seen what you all have wrote and I still, find it a problem, doing an adjustment is easy, the main issue I have is , when the hand is over, I can never find the board in question to look at it to see if the basis of the claim is correct. If someone can help me learn how to look back at a hand that is finsihed, it will sort out my difficulties. Thanks Wayne
  23. Well, I play with pick up p's most of the time, because I have a spare hour here and there, I dont have time to agree a system with a pick up p and people playing on the net should realise that. tollerance is the key on line. If you are that concerned about playing with someone with a fully explained system and someone that alerts everybid, I hope you are not like me and don't understand them any way, so whether they post them or alert them, would it help you at all?????? I have never played live bridge, but from what I have heard the behaviour and attitude of people is far better on line.
  24. Personally I did not like my name plastered all over the newspapers, but hey it work, I stopped using them :D
