Well, this is a very popular author for teens, maybe a few will actually look at the game.
-
Just bought a new bridge novel from Amazon, "The Cardturner", by Louis Sachar. It is about a teenage boy who has to accompany his blind grandfather to bridge tournaments and gets caught up in the game. I read about it in today's Daily Bulletin at the NABC.
-
A lot of this is based on hotel bookings. And talking about Regionals and NABC's is talking apples and oranges. I could write a whole paper about the financing and managing of Regionals, but have participated in only one NABC and that was as finance chair of the host committee. (Reno 2010) There are two kinds of Regionals, the ones that are the profit makers for your District, that support your newspaper, GNT, education, etc - and then the small Regionals that the players insist on having, that make little or no money, and are actually carried by the larger ones. If you have never seen an actual financial breakdown of the costs of one of these tournaments you might be surprised at where the money goes.

Why on the brackets page does it show a score for Lynch vs Barrett when the Pettis team defeated the Barrett team yesterday? And in today's bulletin it shows Lynch vs Pettis. Just wondering, I'm tracking a friend on Pettis.

I didn't notice this thread when I started my thread today. The one thing that makes the kindle better as a reader will be apparent the minute you step outside with yor iPad and can't read the screen. You can read the kindle in bright sunlight.

NABC's are scheduled 6-10 years in advance. I have been told that the number of venues available for 10 day commitments is very limited and expensive, hence scheduling in off season. Even the next Boston NABC has been moved to Rhode Island?? On a positive note the 2016 Reno NABC will be moved from the Grand Sierra to the Silver Legacy, which is downtown. Usually the weather doesn't bother me. I arrive at the hotel, play bridge, then exit the hotel a week or so later to go home. lol

Good luck in the rest of the tournament and I hope you don't run into any further unpleasantness....

I have them both, and like them very much but for indoor use I have been using the iPad most of the time. For sitting outside and reading, though, the Kindle is the only one that works. However, the problem with the iPad is that I have all these neat games on it like backgammon, shuffleboard, spite & malice, etc, and then I have to catch up on all the news, and THEN I can turn on the iPad Kindle app and read my book. The iPad is fairly heavy, especially when you put a nice cover on it which is essential because the thing is so slippery, and I have been noticing some pain in my thumbs. Yesterday at bridge club I started getting cramps in my thumbs and could hardly hold the cards. Could this be iPaditis? I may put the iPad away for awhile, just use the Kindle and see if I can hold the cards again.

Good luck to the District 20 Fight C GNT team, which includes Anoush Shirzadegan, who is a junior player, his father Magid, and teammates, all from the Eugene/Corvallis, Oregon area. They have reached the finals!!!

My Favorite team, the SF Giants, my favorite player right now - Buster Posey.

Yay, situation is completely resolved and everyone is happy. There was no revoke, which the nos figured out by themselves, and they apologized profusely to all. The player who did the interrupting apologized to that player, and I told them that I had handled it badly but that my director forum set me straight. And now we all know how to deal with delayed revoke calls.
-
I am not going to accuse anyone of anything, this is a friendly club, but I am going to talk to him about interrupting, because he is also a certified director and should have known better. This issue of delayed revoke reporting has never come up here before, and I could have asked another player in the game who is an ACBL Tournament Director, but at the time it seemed like such a simple thing.......
-
Thanks for the help. Yes, i realized very quickly that I handled the whole matter badly, but I am going to meet with both pairs tomorrow and settle the matter, then have a private meeting with the person who interrupted the other table, and then lied to me.
-
Okay, the round is over, but the game isn't. The next round, which is the last, is winding down and one pair says there was a revoke in the previous round. I was in the process of putting the scores in the computer, so I told them to talk to the other pair and tell me whether they agree, and the trick situation. After a few minutes they come back and tell me there is agreement, the revoke took a trick and they took tricks after, so I assigned a two trick penalty. (this gave the NOS 1st overall in a Unit Game) Now, two days later I am told by the other side that 1) she was interrupted while playing a slam to be questioned about this revoke, and subsequently went down when she should have made the contract, and 2) she did not actually agree - she questioned the actual play and said she would think about it. She came to the conclusion later that she did not revoke and could reconstruct the play. So, I have several issues working here, including my own bad judgement in trusting two flight A players who are my regular partners.

ACBL Club Games: What is the latest point at which a revoke can be brought to the attention of the Director?
-
This reminded me of a hand years ago at the Santa Clara Regional and I wonder if any of you would call the director - I didn't. Out of the box, in first seat, my opponent opened 7nt, which made. He did not have 7nt in his hand, I don't remember the hand, but his partner came down with a lot of stuff. I think he said something like, "it was time for something good to happen". Actually now that I am older and wiser (not) I think he probably heard that something good was going to happen.

I thought I was going to save money on books when I bought my Kindle, but spending all that time shopping at Amazon has led me to good authors I had never heard of, so I am buying lots more books. I really liked the J P Beaumont detective series by Jance. I have the three Dragon Girl books waiting, my husband has read them - our Kindles are on the same account. I have also enjoyed reading some of the classics that are free, like Treasure Island, and all the Wizard of Oz books (15, which I am working my way through).

That is so funny, Chris, because my partner and I drove up to that tournament on Wednesday and decided to play in the evening side game, thinking it would be a nice relaxed evening. First thing, we are Flight A, which I forgot I just moved into, second thing, our first opponents were Hamish and Mike Shuman. My partner had no idea who they were and I didn't clue her in. I will say this, it was a tough round, but they were the nicest pair we played all evening. I just don't see the need for the arrogance, feigned boredom, intimidation, etc, that I see some in wannabee experts that I rarely see in the true champions. (Although I do know it exists) And, I guess that practice did you good because you won the GNT District Final!! Good luck to you and your team in New Orleans.

Great thread, especially the ACBLscore part, thanks

Tourneys vs robots
JoAnneM replied to ruotal's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I'm sure you and your partner are completely honest, but I can see a lot of problems with that. -
We saw the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - beautiful movie, well acted, I usually don't like subtitles but wasn't a problem after a few minutes the story was so good. I can't imagine the U.S. version being better.

w00t! Anything that we can watch online? National Graphic Explorer Channel The Virus Hunters Animation/visual effects. Andy Murdock you may be able to watch on the NatGeo website

A little off topic but my son just got an Emmy nomination for his National Geographic TV animation/graphic work.

Back to the OP, I think this goes back to the world championship several years ago that was lost in a similar situation, and the change of call was not allowed. I use that incident as an example when telling people to wait till it is their turn to play, after I have been called to the table.

My cat would have finished that bottle of beer by now.
