On BBO, partner and opp are good players. Opps are regular pair and partner and I do not have detail agreement on balancing auction beyond common sense. [hv=pc=n&e=sjt3ha52da965c932&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1cppd2c2d3c4sp]133|200[/hv] What's next bid? How much slam potential does this hand has? If 5♦/5♥ shows 1st round control and 5♠ asks for ♣ control what's your choice(Of course you can choose neither of them)? If you don't agree the meaning I assign on 5♦/♥/♠, what do you think they should be? If you agree, then how do you bid with ♠JTx ♥Kxx ♦KQxx ♣xxx under the same auction? Does this 4♠ shows less or about equal strength than [hv=d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1cppdp1d2c4s]133|100[/hv]?

[hv=pc=n&s=sjt872hk982dct952&w=s953hjt7643d32cj3&n=shdakj98765ckq876&e=sakq64haq5dqt4ca4&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=p2cp2dp3dp3sp4cdpp5dd6cppdppp]399|300[/hv] The actual hand and the actual bidding seq, I sat E, the result was unfortunate. 6♥/♠ are both reasonable sacrifice, 6♣X= is nearly the worst(except for 6♣XX=).

A hand I played a few days ago, IMP pair [hv=pc=n&e=sakq64haq5dqt4ca4&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=p2cp2dp3dp3sp4cp5cp6cppp]133|200[/hv] 2♣ is artificial strong(!!), this is a made up bidding sequence under the assumption that E does not enter the auction. Are you able to stay silence all the way? If you don't think so, when and how do you enter the auction? I'll post the whole hand later.

[hv=pc=n&w=skqhq97dkqt9865c3&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1dd1s]133|200[/hv] your bid?

If that is the case, what's the problem in the following defense? [hv=pc=n&s=sk865hj875dqcak73&w=saq4ht43dk543cj85&n=sj9hkq962da962ct6&e=st732hadjt87cq942&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=p1cp1hp2hp3dp3hp4hppp&p=s3s5sqs9h4hqhah5s2s6sasj]399|300[/hv] The bidding is natural, not sure about why N bid after p decline GT but anyway they are in game. On trick 3 W led a spade, thought p has ♠32 and another trump

You make 3rd best lead from 4-card suit, you get on lead and want to continue this suit, which card should you lead?

nv overcalls in comp
frank0 replied to mike777's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
+1 I think this is the problem that do not noticed by some people habitually overcall light. It's usually not the problem of going for a big penalty but you're giving advancer too much pressure. Partner is likely to have a hand that is unsafe to bid vs. minimum overcall but has game vs. maximum overcall. -
Does 3♠ or 4♥ shows some slam interested hand? Otherwise how can the opener asking for key-card?
-
I led ♣A for the reason billw55 mentioned. My partner brought another opinion, he thought because I had only 1 trump it's less likely leading trump can hurt declare too much and leading the ♣A may solve the guessing problem for declare(e.g. declare missing A and Q).

[hv=pc=n&s=sqj7542h965dj76ca&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=p1d2spp3cppp]133|200[/hv] I sat South, the overcall was questionable but did not get caught. What's the best lead?

Standard Lebensohl

Natural and above 3♦ overcall range -
I think it's the issue of whether N is willing to make a slam try ( the actual bid depends on your method). 22-24HCP is about 4 loser and N get an about 8.5 loser hand so slam is possible if you can find a big fit(like a ♣ fit here). But as usual it's always easier to say after you see both hand. The psychological barrier always make people slightly under-evaluate weak hand vs. partner's strong hand. I would probably also bid 3N if I'm at the table. By the way just noticed the X, what's XX and pass by South mean?

Blame the deal generator.

If that is the case I'm willing to pay higher price to buy GIB.

I've seen people complain the speed of the game just because everybody is taking about 5~7 sec in average in a difficult auction, or taking 15 sec at trick one(some table host even booting me for this reason). I think it will be fun if we can set a table where declare is not allowed to play the first card(but can claim) until 20 or 30 sec after opening lead. It's usually not right to play that fast if you cannot claim at trick one.
-
It can create some ethical problem. If you look uninterested in opp's auction when they are in low level, and ask the meaning of 5NT. It conveys illegal information to partner about which lead you want.

In the actual distribution, he does not. That's based on assumption of E has ♣Q(put ♣J when E return ♣, which does not work in actual distribution). If W has ♣Q you go for squeeze(put small ♣ when E return a ♣).

[hv=pc=n&s=sakqjhjt9dkqjckjt&n=s5432hakqda32ca32&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=2np7nppp]266|200[/hv] A hand from BM2000, lead is ♦4, after you cash all non ♣ winners you find W has 4=2=4=3 or 4=2=3=4, E has 1=5=4=3 or 1=5=3=4, without information on vacant space, who do you play for ♣Q? The answer is W, the explanation is if W has it W's opening lead is restricted to non ♣ so given W lead non♣ it's more likely W has ♣Q. For this hand does anyone know how to calculate(estimate) how much W is favored to have ♣Q? [hv=pc=n&s=sajthajtdkj4ca643&n=sqhqdaqt8632ck752&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1dp3cp4cp4np5dp5np6dp6hp6sp7nppp]266|200[/hv] This is a problem from a quiz book. Lead is ♦5, the author asks you beside finesse two major kings can you find a better line? The answer is if W has two major Ks and ♣ stopper W will be caught by triple squeeze(after all ♦, ♣Kxxx in dummy ♠J♥J♣Ax in your hand, if W discard a K then you cross to your hand with ♣A and cash that J to make the second squeeze), and the author says because W makes passive lead this line is better. I am wondering if anyone can make probability argument on this hand. Why the line seems to require another extra condition(besides 2K you require ♣ stopper locate at right place) can be better, just because W makes a passive lead? If it does better, can you estimate by how much?

I provide my own solution, for those of you who being misled by W's bidding I'm sorry but that's not what I can control. This is the actual distribution [hv=pc=n&s=s98732hk53dq6cj43&w=sqhqt86dakt74cq72&n=sajt64ha742d9cak6&e=sk5hj9dj8532ct985]399|300[/hv] After I won ♥K on second trick I drew trump E won the second trick and return a ♥ to break the entry in ♥ and ♥+♣ squeeze against W(too late to duck now). I think the key is to duck second ♥(no ♥ ruff possible because E must win the trick), after that win whatever return, eliminate ♦, draw trumps. E has no ♥ left now, if E wins second round and return a ♦ then it's over. If E return a ♣, you guess who has ♣Q(put ♣J now if E has it, play small and squeeze W in the end if W has it). The vacant space argument favored E has ♣Q, but HCP argument favored W has ♣Q.

pass, when partner makes a non-forcing bid and it's impossible for you to make a game then stop now. A minority point is partner's 1NT over 1♦ usually implies some ♣.

As title, by off-shape I mean not traditional 4432/4333/5m332, but something like 5M332/5422/6322/5431(singleton honor)/6331(singleton honor) or even wider range of shape. Most likely you decide to open 1NT because you have no proper rebid if you open 1 level suit. My question is, if you allow 1NT includes wide range of shape, do you still consider this opening bid as "limited bid" and let partner decide everything in the rest of bidding? Let's say you play 2/1 15-17 1NT [hv=pc=n&s=sakh32daqtck65432&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1n2hpp]133|200[/hv] You decide to open 1NT because you feel either rebidding 2♣ or 3♣ is improper, now partner decide to defend 2♥, do you allow to pull? [hv=pc=n&s=skj9hqdk65432cak2&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1n2c(Majors)d2hppdp]133|200[/hv] Again you don't want to rebid broken suit at 3 level so you open 1NT, now do you allow to bid after 2♥ or pull the double?
