Sectional open pair [hv=pc=n&s=s4haj62djt973cq97&w=sakq85hkq975dq6c5&n=sj93ht4dak54cakjt&e=st762h83d82c86432&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=pp1sppp]399|300|1S+1[/hv] I sat N, I felt not comfortable with that hand after opp open 1♠, either I had to overcall 1NT w/o stopper or I had to X with T4 in♥. My partner also felt his hand was too weak to balance. We ended up in defending 1♠, they made 2 while 5♦ was cold for us.(The result was 19% for us on this hand) Would you bid differently with our hands?

How often do(What's your rule of thumb) you lead unsupported honor when there is no obvious clue(e.g. long side suit on dummy from bidding)? Should we avoid leading doublenton trump when opp is known to have only 8 cards fit(e.g. if T is in dummy trump lead solve the problem for declare)?

Not exactly, they can ruff club also if club is not 5-3 or 4-4

Most hopeless / clueless comment?
frank0 replied to flametree's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
A story I found in other forum. opp1:"Is that game try?" opp2:"No, just invitation." -
What's the whole auctions(or even better whole hands)? Maybe it's not a problem with X/pass/overcall but the problem of later auction.

1♥, X, X For the first hand make sure you have agreement with p on the meaning of double, some people play it for penalty.

Having a hand twice
frank0 replied to mr1303's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Nice comment by ham lol. Let me answer the unimportant question. First I think it's better to make sure whether one of the hand is pre-dealt. Assume not, then the probability of having two exactly the same hand is not as bad as you thought. I'm assuming you mean you hold exactly the same 13 cards twice(but opp can have different cards). Total number of possible hands N=C(52,13)=52!/13!39! Total number of hands you play in your life time=m First we calculate the probability that you haven't played exactly the same hand twice after you've played m hands. m=1,P=1 m=2,P=(N-1)/N m=3,P=(N-1)/N * (N-2)/N ->because your third hand has chance to be the same as your first hand and your second hand ...... after m hands P= N*(N-1)*...(N-m+1)/N^m = N!/(N^m*(N-m)!) apply stirling approximation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling%27s_approximation lnP~-m+(N-m+0.5)*ln(N/(N-m)) The probability that you hold the same hand twice in your life is 1-P Define people who addict in bridge is those who play more than 50 hands/week(2 club games per week is more than that). A person who addict in bridge for 50 years in his/her life has played at least 130000 hands, in that case 1-P~0.013 which means in average 1 out of 77 addicting players have the experience of having same hand twice in their life but they cannot remember it. For those professional players, I estimate m=1000000 and I get 1-P~0.545, about half of them have the experience of having exactly same hand twice in their life!! Back to the top, if you mean the whole hands(in 4 players) is exactly the same. We just need to let N=C(52,13)*C(39,13)*C(26,13)*C(13,13) and I leave it to you. :) -
If you use some 3 level response to 1NT(15-17) to show 5-5 major invitation and 5-5 major game forcing, then what is the meaning of the following sequence? 1NT-2♦-2♥-2♠ 1NT-2♥-2♠-3♥

Big hand without fit
frank0 replied to frank0's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Free and gwnn: I think 3♠ is a good choice also, after that if my partner keep bidding spade, is that showing extra strength(6-card), willing to play 5-2, or just nothing else to say? Mck4711: Thanks for the advise, but I think our agreement is 1♠-3♦ is WJS, 1♠-1NT-2♥-3♦ is invitation 6+ and 2 over 1 100% forcing to 3NT at least. I don't even know we have 4th suit forcing there. Han: 4NT would be made exactly, partner put down ♠xxxxxxx ♥AK9xx ♦Q, lead was ♠K and your RHO has ♥Jxxx :) Unfortuantely I was in 6NT :( EricK: about 1♠-2♦-3♥, I haven't discussed with my partner about it but could you give a little bit more reason on why you don't like to treat it as splinter? -
Your side is red, partner open 1♠ and you have ♠Ax ♥QT ♦AKJTxx ♣Kxx 1♠-2♦-2♥-3♦-3♥-? What's next?

Fit showing jump in competition

[hv=d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1c1sp3d(fit-showing)]133|100[/hv] All of the bridge books about competitive bidding I have define 3♦ as single suit invitation but it seems like a mordern approach is treat this 3♦ as fit showing jump. Could anyone tell me(or tell me where can I find) the detail of this convention? My questions include 1. What's the main purpose/advantage of this bid? 2. What's the rough strength/suit quality/trump qaulity of this bid? 3. Is this on if I jump to 4 level(partner simple overcall 2 level)? Is anything changes if responder enters the auction? -

Even though ♣Kx was on I didn't have entry/trump control to ruff both ♠ and unblock ♣Q before drawing all trumps. 1. Was my analyze on declare play correct? 2. If it's impossible to make 5♥ even double dummy then comment on bidding.

If I played ruffing finesse on C I could have made it but which line is the percentage line? At the first glance it seems diamond break are better in percentage(4-3 is 61%) but there was some disadvantage about this line 1. potential overruff of ♥ when I tried to come back to my hand 2. I cannot cash ♣AK before drawing trump 3. I cannot guard trump 3-0 anymore Any idea?

After that I returned a club so declare's spade loser went away on ♥AK and because of my double declare knew how to play trump. 5♦X make partner:"very bad double p." Frank: "Yes but I prefer SK at first trick." partner:"and I prefer you to lead SQ." Frank: "Yes" Question 1. If I pass 5D is that forcing? 2. Any other comments on defense and bidding are welcome

Defining Doubles - III
frank0 replied to Phil's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Penalty for the reason given by aguahombre. -
You hold ♠KQT9 ♥KJ976 ♦AQ54 ♣void on 4th seat, third seat open 1♠, what's your choice? Describe it if you think the answer depends on vul, MP/IMP, strength of opp, etc. Also describe(if exist) a similiar hand that you'll make different decision.(e.g. if this card becomes that card I'll bid this instead of that.)
-
IMO South should pass even if you play double as penalty and North's hand is not enough for reopen so 3♦ undoubled is just normal result. You cannot expect to have the best result after opp preempt and that's why they preempt. For penalty double you can find conventions here. http://www.bridgeguys.com/Conventions/Defense3LevelPreempt.html The main purpose of those conventions are preserving double as penalty/optional after opp's 3 level open and using other bid to show take-out hands. However those conventions are not popular. It's maybe because of the reason helene_t mentioned.

In my opinion BBO forum is not a good place to find regular partner in your local area. I suggest you searching ACBL website(see below) and finding local bridge clubs in your area. http://www.acbl.org/play/findClub.html You can probably find partnership desk on the website of local bridge club. For example, something like http://www.eastbayunit-502.com/id17.html (this one is the club in my area) If you cannot find it just try to go to club/sectional/regional events and there are usually some people putting their name on partnership desk(i.e. searching partner for upcoming tournament) so you can play with them and perhaps establishing regular partnership. For sectional/regional schedule search http://www.acbl.org/tournament-calendar/regional/ By the way I'm Frank and my bbo id is frank0. I'm also from Taiwan. If you're interesting in playing online I'll be on BBO sometimes. You can contact me by email(cyclopropene@hotmail.com).

Copy from the text Other 2-level bids, and 3-level minor rebids The remaining rebids at the 2-level (over a negative 1♦) are natural and show a strong club with at least 5 cards in the suit bid. Same thing holds for a bid of a minor at the 3-level. It seems like rebid 3♦ by opener is a choice, but with that crappy hand and partner does not promise anything this bid looks awkward to me.
