Response to a negative double Playing 5-card majors you hold ♠ Q9643 ♥ K3 ♦ AK5 ♣ Q63 You open 1♠. 1♠ - 2♥ - X - p ? What do you rebid? 2♠, 3♣, 3♦ or something else? jogs

You didn't post the auction. You only posted your interpretation of the auction. I want to know if partner has wasted values in diamonds.
-
Please show the entire auction in a readable form. What does partner know about our hand? I'll probably just bid 4♠. Fear being in five down one.
-
I don't XX ever with a misfit. P P 1S dbl p 2H P P(3h?) ? XX warns opponents not to overreach.
-
There are so many hand patterns. There are very few bids. How can you have a system which can show every pattern?
-
Qx should be enough. Partner may be trying to right side the NT with Kxx or Ax. Of course you will probably go down 2 or 3 if he has only xxx.
-
LHO didn't raise hearts. Looks like an unlucky hand for us. Partner's pattern could be 1=2=4=6 ♠ 7 ♥ Q5 ♦ K972 ♣ AKQ652 The limit of this hand could be ten tricks in a minor. In diamonds we would need to find the queen.
-
1♥. If the bidding stays low willing to double next. 1♣ - 1♥ - 2♣ - p p - X
-
Whose bidding is awful? Very few partnerships have mechanisms to punish the N-S bidding. 4♣X down 2 is only worth +300. And the OP opponents failed to double.
-
Assume trumps are 4=1=4=4 around the table. You start with four trumps and they make 4♠. That means partner has nothing. They make 1 spade, 1 heart and 8 minor suit tricks. Your declarer wont play that badly. After a spade to our king he will know trumps don't split 3-2. He will not continue with a spade to the ace on trick 6. He will go to plan B. He will just cash his 8 minor suit winners. If there are problems with communications, he may go down 2. He will not go down a telephone number.
-
Try both ruffs by East or both ruffs by West. Maybe many of the trumps played on separate tricks. South may only make his 3 top spades if trumps are 5-4. If you blindly defend four trumps off the top, E-W makes 2 spades, 1 heart. E-W must then find 7 minor suit tricks to make this hand.
-
I don't see it. Every time I lead a heart from that holding it is Ax on one hand and Qx on the other.
-
If pard has that much, what was opponents bidding on? That leaves them 19 points with only one ace.
-
Pass. Do not want partner to pull to 5♥. Plan to lead ♠A. Hope to find correct continuation after seeing dummy.
-
I think you have overvalued HCPs. HCP is just one of many variables used for finding the best contract. You need to show your side's suit much sooner. Opponents are given a free reign to interfere with your auctions. The theory is it is usually you hand when you open 1♣. Opponents are less interested in finding their best spot than denying you your best contract.
-
The double of 1♣ should promise 7 cards in the majors and at least 3 cards in each major. Therefore they probably have 8 or fewer hearts. We have 7 to 9 spades. Looks like this board has 15 to 17 tricks. Either pard or RHO doesn't have his bid or is at the lower end of the range. Some of you guys are probably loyal to pard. In this vulnerability I tend to believe the vulnerable player is more likely to have his bid. I pass. Plan to lead the ♠6 and hope we beat them.

3♦ by the OP is less of an underbid than his partner competing with 4♦ is an overbid. I would have passed 3♠. Didn't he already show that hand with 2NT?

Weak Jump Shift vs Bergen Raises

You're right. R/S seem to recommend fjs with about a king lighter than Manfield. Although with 6-4 and 5-5 I would make a fjs with all his examples. Manfield used the fjs to set up the singleton rule on the 5 level. -

I have no idea what are the expected tricks with clubs as trumps with either of those hands opposite a 1♠ open. Probably no one else knows either. No system can cater to all hands. The idea is to attempt to maximize our expected score. No system is capable of collecting the best result on every board. While you are concern with finding the ideal spot with possible misfit hands, I'm more interesting in catering to hands that fit. Manfield explains that when playing fit jumps partner will know immediately whether our hands fit. This will assist him in 4 and 5 level decisions on whether to double, bid on or pass. Not easy, the fit jump shows the possibility of 5 tricks in a side suit in addition to the 5 tricks in the trump suit. Most players seem to think a 12-3 hand is always minimum for opening. While this is true at the time of the opening bid, during a slam auction any hand with four controls is better than minimum. 1♠ - 3♣ KQxxx xxx Ax QJx This hand has the ♦A(2 controls), ♠KQ(1 1/2 controls), and the ♣QJ. The ♣QJ is known to be working. That's why it is worth a 3♦ cuebid. KQxxx QJx Ax xxx This hand is not worth cuebidding. The ♥QJ is of unknown value. -

Have you read the Robson/Segal book? Have you read the Ed Manfield articles in TBW in the seventies? The fit jump establishes that our side holds the balance of power. We will declare or double opponents if they declare. -

Non-fitting hands are easy. Just bid less. I like the Robson/Segal term 'contested auctions'. Axxx x xxx AKxxx facing KQxxx xxx Ax QJx Think few partnerships would find slam with this pair of hands. -

Not hardly. Knowing the shortness isn't enough. Change the hands. Axxx x KQJxx Kxx facing KQxxx xxx Ax QJx The QJ is working in the jumper's suit. But is of unknown value in a side suit. A huge underbid. Most players would rebid 4♠, not 3♠. The values don't have to be wasted. Axxx xx xx AKxxx facing KQxxx QJx Ax xxx Change the ♥Q to ♣Q. Axxx xx xx AKxxx facing KQxxx Jxx Ax Qxx There aren't sufficient rounds of bidding for the partnership to exchange all necessary info. All current systems seem more interested in total points than whether the points work together. Bidding systems should make a greater attempt to determine if the partnership hands fit. Fitting hands produce more tricks on fewer high card points. -

Axxx x xxx AKxxx facing KQxxx QJx Ax xxx ----- 1♠ 3♣ - 4♠ all pass Easily would make only ten tricks with spades as trumps. Opener knew immediately hands didn't fit. Axxx xx xx AKxxx facing KQxxx QJx Ax xxx ----- 1♠ 3♣ - 3♦ 3♠ - 4♠ all pass 4♠ will probably fail. Hard to stop short of game. Bidding game on momentum. -

Axxx x xxx AKxxx facing KQxxx xxx Ax QJx 11 opposite 12. Nearly cold for slam. Can only get there by playing fit jumps. Expected tricks is more than just total high card points and total trumps. It helps to have a double fit and a source of tricks. -

I'm convinced fit showing is the most effective way of playing jump shifts. At least for 5-card major openings systems. 1M - 3m. Any 5+m hand with 4+M support worth forcing to game. Axxx x xxx AKxxx. Partner opens 1♠. Bid 3♣. This sequence occurs with relatively high frequency.
