bridge is not a sport
jogs replied to patroclo's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Why would the Olympics want bridge? Bridge draws few spectators. Most bridge players wouldn't be willing to sit thru a championship match. Non players wouldn't have a clue how to follow the action. -
What do you bid with 3=3=5=2 and about 3 or 4 points?
-
Control bidding is for possible slam auctions. When pard had AKxxxx, Qx is better than xxx. Don't think one has an opportunity to show Qx very often. But one can keep this in mind when deciding whether or not to cue some other control.
-
PASS. Never invite in notrumps. 3NT or pass. Sometimes aggressive opponents balance, then you have a surprise for them.

-
You really need more imagination with your thread titles. Without inverted minors it is nearly impossible to investigate slam without risking bypassing 3NT.
-
I don't think it is close. With a combined 33 HCP we rate to be less than 50/50 for making 12 tricks. And with this hand we rate to have a combined 32 HCP or less.
-
You can have your fun. I prefer plus scores.

The forum prefers this format. I threw out the ♣2. I also changed the North ♠6 to ♠8. There were two ♠6. This format does not allow duplicate cards. [hv=pc=n&s=sajt6hjtdaq964cqj&n=skq8754hakqdk2c98]133|200[/hv] It is easier to count the cards.

This site doesn't support tabs. South North ♠ AJ106 ♠ KQ7654 ♥ J10 ♥ AKQ ♦ AQ964 ♦ K2 ♣ QJ2 ♣ 98 It does seem to support 'code'.

support doubles through ?
jogs replied to movingon's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hope you meant does NOT deny 3 card support due to crappy hand. ♠ xxx ♥ QJx ♦ KQxx ♣ KQx Even with this hand pass may be better than double. This hand is only worth 10 HCP in spades. It is no longer an opening hand. -
support doubles through ?

You can play them as high as you want. From 2 spades on a pass does not deny 3 card support. The double shows 3 card support and extras. It is not as if there were a better use of the double. Even on the two level a pass does not deny 3 card support. 1♦ - pass - 1♠ - 2♥ ? ♠ xxx ♥ QJx ♦ KQxx ♣ KJx Pass might be better than double with this hand. -
Negative Free Bids & Fit jumps
jogs replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
This is the negative freebid article by Karen Walker. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=negative%20free%20bids%20karen%20walker This is a discussion of negative freebids started by Ryan Wessels on Bridge Winners. http://bridgewinners.com/article/view/negative-freebids/ There doesn't seem to be wide concensus on what range constitutes a negative freebid. Seems like any partnership playing the treatment must spend time discussing and agreeing on the details. Do not play negative freebids with a pickup partner. His view on the treatment may vastly differ from yours. Here's my take. Even in contested auctions most partnerships still give finding a major suit game top priority. Negative freebids are better for finding the best strain. If you are willing to accept less precise game bidding for the higher frequency of being in the best strain, then give negative freebids a try. First separate 5 card suits hands from 6 card suits. With a 5 card suit the range should be 6 to 11 HCP. At the bottom of the range(6-8) the suit must be at least KQxxx. With a 6 card suit or longer the range is lowered to 4-9 HCP. At the bottom of this range(4-6) the suit should be QJTxxx or better. Holding a singleton makes NFB more attractive. Karen Walker focuses on the 1m-(1♠)-2♥ auction. 1m-(1♠)-X allows opponents to preempt your side with a 2♠ call. Now you must decide whether the hearts are worth introducing at the 3 level. NFB allows you to introduce the suit on the two level. 1♦-(2♣). There is a family of auctions where opponents overcall at the 2 level. On these auctions there is a very small chance of you ever holding a near opening hand. The NFB is more pragmatic. These NFB hands occur with much higher frequency. In the Bridge Winners' discussion Kit Woolsey says he has found little value in playing 2 of a minor as NF. He only plays 2 of a major as nfb. Fit jump shifts are compatible with NFB. 1♣-(1♦) 1♣-(1♥) 1♦-(1♥) On these auctions one of a major is forcing. Two of a major can be fit jump. There are no NFB auctions from these starts. Remember that non forcing doesn't mean shutout. Opener should usually raise with 4 card support. -
Negative Free Bids & Fit jumps
jogs replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Absolutely not. 1♦ - 1♠ - X ♠ xx ♥ Kxxx ♦ Kxx ♣ xxxx I'm doubling and planning to pass any rebid. The double followed by a rebid in a new suit promises an opening hand. Still with a misfit we may choose to pass under game. -
Negative Free Bids & Fit jumps
jogs replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Non forcing doesn't mean partner must pass. Perhaps it is time to rethink hand strength. Bid up to your level of trumps. The extra trump is worth an extra trick. ♠ xx ♥ Qxxx ♦ AKxx ♣ Kxx As dealer you open 1♦ 1♦ - 1♠ - 2♥ - pass ?? Do not pass. This is not a minimum. Bid 3♥. ♠ xxx ♥ AKxxxx ♦ xx ♣ Qx or ♠ xxx ♥ AKxxx ♦ xx ♣ Axx is sufficient for 4♥ to be a favorite. -
Negative Free Bids & Fit jumps
jogs replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Only two of a major should be used for NFB. All other non-jump bids in contested auctions are better served as forcing. 3/4 of the suit contracts are played in the majors. You are less likely to buy the contract in the minors and you must bid one level higher. -
Actually RHO played you like a fiddle.
-
This is really true? Is there any wide spread agreement as to what that range is? Also I like splinters to show a singleton only, never a void. I like 3♥(9 cards in two suits) with that hand. Fit showing jump shifts both in and out of competition.

Bidding as a Path
jogs replied to kenrexford's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I have never been convinced of the value of relay bids. Wished it were possible to design a study to test its value. -
Yeah, what's the range for 2♥? Opposite a normal vulnerable flanney opening South has a 4♠ call.
-
Encrypted signals goes against the spirit of full disclosure. Also BIT means the signal is off.
-
Pass. There is no reason to believe we have more than 8 cards in any suit. Any four level contract doubled down two will cost more than their part score.
-
That's what I think. 3-1 in the side suits is worth between 1 and 1.5 points better 2-2 in the side suits. It's worth a little more than 1/3 of a trick.
-
6322 pattern is also bad, as is Q10 in a side suit. When vulnerable, being chicken can save many points.
-
I agree 3♥ is better non forcing in contested auctions. But it doesn't matter what I think. Most Americans play ambiguous(or undiscussed) bids in contested auctions are forcing.
