  1. http://www.whatgamesare.com/determinism.html Chess is a deterministic game. Bridge is a non-deterministic game. No luck in chess.
  2. Precise is a little strong. Adequate for most players. Every valuation system has a high standard deviation of error. Original estimates of value are NOT written in stone. Values are dynamic, not static. As the auction progresses one should constantly revalue the values of the hand. Think in terms of partnership tricks, not points for my hand.
  3. Here's how the relay and bye stand works. Even number of tables. Two rows with an equal number of tables. bye stand table set 4 table 1 set 1 table 4 set 3 table 2 set 2 table 3 set 2 chair for relay boards. bye stand table set x table 1 set 1 table X set x-1 other tables other tables table x/2 set x/2 table (x/2)+1 set x/2 chair for relay boards. Both rows have the same number of tables.
  4. Very few hands fit that description. Usually means opponents are cross ruffing. Don't know about binky points. A 8-card fit plays one trick(on average) better than notrumps when the SST is 4 or less. The 8-card fit one-half a trick better when SST is 5. That assumes the expected tricks is between 7 and 10 1/2.
  5. You need to play a cue bidding style to avoid this 'bad' slam. The drawback is opponents will know to lead hearts against you.
  6. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=chinese%20to%20english That's nice. I was unaware that Google had language to language translations.
  7. What's the standard deviation for those numbers? Isn't it at least 2 or 3?
  8. This should probably be the theory forum instead of the expert forum. It should be threads about with 5=3=3=2, is it ever right to bid 3♠ with this pattern? The auction is 1♠-2♥-2♠-3♥, ?. This is the general question. With a specific question where the hand is given, post it on the intermediate/advance forum.
  9. I should have mentioned that possibly. At the table I don't remember ever knowing that 3NT goes down with 5 of a minor making.
  10. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Hamman From English Bridge, June 2006, p. 19.
  11. Is it possible to stop new members(those with under 100 posts) starting a new thread in the expert forum? A known expert would of course be allowed to start a new thread even when they are a new member.
  12. The hand in the original post was 2-2 in the minors. This South hand is marginally stronger. Opponents green. Sounds like you are not from the USA. Look up deflategate(American football). Opening 2♥ is safe only as long as partner is barred from competing. If your convention card says a weak two is 6-10(or 11), 2♥ is not an option.
  13. I happen to think flannery should be 11-15 when 4531 or 4513 and 12-16 when 4522. The flatter pattern doesn't play as well. But there is no easy way for me to prove it.
  14. I can count only 9 tricks by going up with the ace. 1 spade, 4 hearts, and 4 diamonds. If RHO has the king, there are still only 9 tricks. So what happened? Was the field in 1NT+1 for 120? 110 was a poor result?
  15. 3NT's chances depend on the distribution of the heart suit. 1=2=3=7. Don't like our chances if pd has only one heart. 2=1=3=7. Now we may be able to win 9 tricks before they take 5. Think singleton heart with pd is more likely than doubleton heart.
  16. Undouble. Want to defend 3♥, not 3♥X. We need the undouble bid.
  17. 1♥. Have no idea which bid works best. Just know I wouldn't like to see pass - 1♦ - pass - 1♠ pass - 2♠ Passed hands should stop punishing pd for being aggressive. To go to the 3 level pd should hold 4 card support and a singleton.
  18. Actually the correct lead is a club. Change ♥xx ♦ A to ♥ x ♦ Ax. 6♣ makes with a heart lead. A club beats both combinations.
  19. Open 1♥. LHO wont be showing his 5/5 in the majors.
  20. Wasn't it Belladonna who said against a small slam, if you have a singleton, lead it. Did he lead the ♠7? Should work if pd holds a black ace.
  21. Don't most players open 1♥ with the South hand? The lesson is 'if LHO has 5/5 in the majors, always open 1NT with a 5 card major'.
  22. Thanks, the first method worked. 24. I'm totally confused on which is the address bar.
