Why is this gf? My partners also hold nothing when I have a good hand.

Pass, Double, or Compete?
jogs replied to xeno123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Only guessing. Passell's double says 4♥ is likely to make and he has two diamond losers. Partner please pass with two diamonds and bid 5♥ if you hold a singleton diamond. Singleton rule. -
That's what I thought. Aren't we always leading a heart? The double should ask for a lead of another suit.

I thought this was tricky
jogs replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Bergen recommended that opener rebid more than 2♠ with 4-card support. Therefore his 2♠ rebid shows 2 or 3 spades. Using Bergen responses to Jacoby any further bid by you would be anti-percentage. -
I totally confused. Why don't you just post the auction up to this point? Also explain each bid which is artificial.
-
I'm in the 4.) camp.

No, I didn't write opening 1♦ denies a 4-card major. After a 1♣ opening, responding 1♦ denies a 4-card major when weak. Those two statements are different. I never read Hardy's last book. I certainly agree there is no obligation to find a 4-4 major fit. Balance of the hand is just one of the important features. The real key is will the 4-4 major fit play better than 3NT? It depends where the honor cards are located. Opposite Fluffy's 4=6=3=0 hand honors in clubs are duplication for a 4-4 spade fit. No club honors means all points are working into the other three suits. It really improves our chances of making 6♠.

From Max Hardy's original book Five Card Majors, Western Style(1974) page 12. Hand c) ♠ AQxx ♥ Kxx ♦ Kxxx ♣ Jx Hardy recommends: 1♦ - 1♥; 1♠. Lycier, think you're confusing this auction with 1♣ - 1♦. Here 1♦ denies a 4-card major when weak. I still rebid strong 4-card majors whenever there is also a 4-card club suit.
-
You're confusing 1 level with 2 level. 1♠ promises 4-card diamonds, nothing more. Some partnerships rebid 1♠ with 4=3=3=3. Responder may be 4-4 in the majors with a hand which can't bid over 1NT. Let's return to my original hand. ♠ KQxx ♥ Kx ♦ QJxx ♣ xxx This was to illustrate that when all points are working it doesn't take much for slam. Improve the hand. ♠ KQxx ♥ Kx ♦ Axxx ♣ xxx Now nearly everyone would open. 1♠ would show where the strength is located and 6♠ is a good contract. Change the hand again. ♠ xxxx ♥ Kx ♦ QJxx ♣ KQx You are not required to rebid 1♠ with every 4-card spade suit. Now 1NT would describe this hand better. We probably belong in 3NT. With weak spades don't suggest a contract in the 4-4 spades.

2♣ is the best bid. We want to know if partner has wasted values in clubs. 3♣ or 2NT by opener means there are wasted club values. We should just show the spade support and allow opener to make moves towards slam. Other rebids by opener means all HCP are working. ♠ KQxx ♥ Kx ♦ QJxx ♣ xxx Isn't this a nearly 50% chance for slam? And opener rates to hold a better hand.
-
If partner holds ♠KQ and ♥K, these hands fit like a glove. Unfortunately bridge is an imperfect information game short of peeking there is no way of knowing the pertinent information.

Am I the only seeing that Fluffy has posted the East hand? Should that hand not be South? [hv=pc=n&s=sa952haq9853dk72c&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=1dp1hp1sp]133|200[/hv]

Both deserve more than 50% of the blame. Still 4♥ may fail. Game must be in 4♥. In 3NT the winning hearts may become stranded.

This 'bid game or pass' style started about 25 years ago. A young unknown Norwegian pair destroyed an elite field with 70% games in a 4 session matchpoint event. All new suits on the 2 and 3 level are slam tries. Invites gives info to two defenders and only one partner. What's one HCP worth? About a 15% greater chance of making game? When defenders know declarers exact HCP they defend more accurately. It is safer to exchange info on slam auctions because defenders usually have close to nothing and the info doesn't help them very much.

Make a hand layout
jogs replied to jerdonald's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
It isn't easy. Assuming it isn't a hand you played online on BBO. Look thru threads on the forums. There may be an easier way than my suggestions. Find a format you desire. Click reply. You may find something like: [hv=pc=n&s=sakt97hqt5da96cj2&n=sq52hak82dq84ca75&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=1cp2sp4sp4np5hp5np6dp6sppp]266|200[/hv] Shows the auction and the North-South hands. sakt97hqt5da96cj2 That's South's hand. a=1cp2sp4sp4np5hp5np6dp6sppp That's the auction. 266|200 use 399|300 A bigger picture for us seniors. -
One hand, two bidding questions
jogs replied to chasetb's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Is 2♦ non-forcing or shutout? If non-forcing passing out 2♦ may be the best spot. -
What were the N-S hands? Undouble was the best call.
-
It's more like which is the least bad among losing actions. Where's the undouble card when we need. Want to defend 3♦, only not doubled.
-
Did LHO pass in tempo? Few intermediate players holding 13+ HCP can pass in tempo. Sounds like a 20/20 +/-2 HCP board. Partners' most likely pattern is 4=4=1=4. That means our partnership pattern is 6=7=5=8. If we declare, we are at least 2 levels higher than where we should be. PASS. Lead a low heart, ♥5. Under lead that ♥A. If opponents have the ♥K, it is more likely to be in LHO's hand than RHO's.

4♣?? What does 4♣ mean?

The national spelling bee is on ESPN every year. One year ESPN had one hour on the scrabble championships. Never seen bridge. Cricket occasionally gets mentioned.
-
The Olympics doesn't care if bridge is a sport or not. Bridge draws few spectators. Videogame tournaments may draw a 20 million TV audience in the USA. Bridge would be lucky to draw a few hundred thousand.
-
Too many hand types. Too few bidding sequences available. Can't be bothered. 3NT down lots. Next board.

Find your way after support double
jogs replied to scarletv's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Wish it were possible to bid 3♣ and announce that it shows an opening hand. -
Clients and 80 year-olds are winning national championships. The World Championships are playing 48 boards a day during the knockout stage. If bridge wants to be a sport they must play 80 boards a day. Olympics will never accept bridge. No money from spectators. Bridge players wont watch bridge. ESPN showed Scrabble once, but never bridge.
