ATB - missed unfav sac
the_clown replied to Jinksy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I think E has a double of 4♥ and then W will bid 4♠. -
100% agree with Phil, passing is not an option for me with this hand NV.

Don't open 4-4-4-1 hands with 12 or 13 points

I would strongly consider opening a 12-14 NT at favourable. -
what'll I do. what'll I do
the_clown replied to kenberg's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
4♥. Maybe we can make slam, but in an unfamiliar partnership I like to keep it simple and avoid huge disasters. -
I would open 3♠ as North, raised to 4. Doesnt look very good on this hand.
-
My hand has no shape, 2 defensive tricks and only 3 spades. Partner couldnt overcall 1♠ white at MP. I cant see how a double could be a good idea, so I just pass and try to win the board in defense.

I would like to play with jfaria pls :) -
Basically what jodepp said. I am surprised that so many posters actually play it as nf.

What is partner's hand?
the_clown replied to Siegmund's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Partner has a competitive hand with 6(5)♥s. With an invitational hand he would have bid a direct 3♥ or doubled for t/o and then bid ♥s. Now I would just compete to 3♥s -
I think Rainer makes a fair point here. It is quite likely that Smirnov had made his mind what to do over 1♠X in the previous round, so he had nothing to think about when 1♠ doubled came back to him.
-
Completely agree with Rainer. Besides if you bid it confidently they may sometimes save.

Avoiding 4-3 fits
the_clown replied to wanoff's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I agree, I play the same methods that you described. I realized that with a good 9 or 10 count I may be stuck for a bid once in a while, but I think knowing whether partner has 4 or 5 card support makes a huge difference on a lot of hands. And if sometimes you were about to miss a game, the opponents may save by competing over 1♠ -
Avoiding 4-3 fits

I would go low and bid only 1♠ as South (2♠ shows 5 for me and cuebidding with the wasted king of hearts is clear overbid). Now North is kinda stuck and may pass or bid 2♥. Over 2♥ - South will just jump to 3NT. -
Spade fit, not good enough to bid 3♠. Normally 3 cards, but I guess you can construct some hands with 4 card support
-
No way I am passing 3rd seat fav with a 6-5 and 2 cards in the majors. 3♣ looks routine to me, but I could understand opening 2♦, even 1m is way better than pass.
-
I would pass. Take the sure 200-300, its most unclear if we can make game. Bidding is ridiculous IMHO.
-
I would have doubled initially, having started with 2♣, I pass now. Partner doesnt have 5♠ so game is unlikely, and I really dont want to encourage partner to bid 4♣s (he will expect a 6 card suit so he might bid anyway)
-
I would try 3♦ hoping to get partner to bid 3N with a ♥ stop.
-
I would lead a diamond hoping not to blow a trick. A ♥ is close second.
-
I dont know any reasonable player who will pass 4♥. As for the lead, I would try a club. It looks like W has Hx in hearts and nice diamond support to justify his jump to game (in ACOL there is no limit raise in 1N right?).
-
I think that 2♥ is fine, a direct 3♥ shows a better hand for me. Of course having bid 2♥ North should make a forward going move when South shows extra values.
-
I would lead a ♥. If partner was desperate for a diamond lead he may have well risked a 2♦ overcall (he is NV). Clearly he will need an excellent 5 card suit or 6 card suit for an overcall. Leading a club is out when partner didnt double 2♣, besides Jxx is a terible holding to lead from. Leading a spade will often cost a trick and even when partner has an honour, we have no entry to cash the spades.
-
3♣ - I see no reason not to show my second suit.
-
Very difficult to get best slam contract
the_clown replied to lycier's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would have rebid 3♣ as North, if partner has only 5♥s they may force us in spades and make the club suit absolutely worthless. -
