http://tinyurl.com/y93g6op8 Here is another example of the flaw in double dummy use in play. here is defense Clubs is trump and I lead up to AQJT864 Gib flys with King K9 It is remotely possible I have enough clubs that playing for the drop is reasonable and playing small gets a trick Playing K cant help In this case it didnt matter but in the analysis of other hands Gib is flawed An obvious example is the way Gib likes to lead singleton Kings as it safe lead doesnt cost as Gib "knows" you will drop off-side King

not good contract?! lose 2 clubs and K♠ no finesses. The friendly lead allows making 5 as cards lie but 4 is unbeatable. Only danger is someone with 3+♠ gets a club ruff or a diamond ruff. I don't know what odds for that are but I doubt it's close to 50% Also a 4-1 or 5-0 ♠ break could be a problem.
-
The bidding is fine and the responses were all reasonable. You reached a 50% slam which is ok. But you didnt take a play that had a decent chance to make. When you play a club simply play K♣ and it makes. If Ace is behind you then you are down.

Weak Two Openings and Losing Trick Count
steve2005 replied to prando's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Losing Trick Count makes sense when you have a fit. So does make sense when responding. For other choices it can be a tool or a guideline but shouldn't make any decisions solely on loser count. Because weak 2's can be shapely a weak 2 can have a lot less than 8 losers. Also a bad one can easily have 9 losers. -
bid this after RHO opens 2 Clubs
steve2005 replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I don't know how much effort you should put into slam bidding after opps open strong 2♣. It just ain't happening enough to worry about and besides their is no science to freaks like this. Make your bid and take your chances. -
Strong 2 Diamonds open 18-19 and balanced
steve2005 replied to robiche's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
I've seen those neg pos responses. They don't make much sense opposite what is essentially a 1.5NT bid. Transfers make more sense to make use of the fact one hand is limited and you can often place the contract and let big hand play it. I suspect the people using a negative/positive approach may also including other hand type into 2♦. Like a strong ♦ hand for example. -
Suggested spot to play?! Gib wouldn't even bid 2♣ Why would it suggest now to play in 5♣ rather than 5♦? But who knows with Gib?

What’s your opening bid?
steve2005 replied to Dinarius's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
So if 2♣ is big hand2♦ - 2♥ neg 3♦ you have same meaning as 2♣-2♦-3♦ but played from right side Some people do play Benjamin some Revere Benjamin -
Inverted Minors
steve2005 replied to jerdonald's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
For your partner. Do you have an agreement that you are allowed to use your judgement and not show a poor major? Then your fine. If raising a minor 100% denies a 4-card major then you violated your agreement. As to your opponents unless they asked they drew their own conclusions. -
What’s your opening bid?
steve2005 replied to Dinarius's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I don't get it. If 2♣ is the big hand. What is wrong with opening 2♦? If your happen to be playing Benjamin this way you might as well open 2♦ or not play the convention. -
Taking advantage of a 'Law' situation
steve2005 replied to 661_Pete's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
This is just silly. In a football game do people feel sad if someone goes offside and gets a 5 yard penalty. No. Forget it, is just part of the game. -
Gib can bid fairly accurately with normal hands. But lots of situations cause Gib fits some bids that just dont fit Gib's system competition unusual distribution and I don't mean freaks just the normal sort of aberration your system should be able to handle balancing bidding after passing much more...

overcall vs double
steve2005 replied to perk1329's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
You can't always be 4441 the perfect hand for doubling. In fact this shape is relatively rare. 5431 is also a good hand to double on. It is much more flexible than overcalling your 5-card suit. Double will be better whenever your partner bids your 54 card suit. Even when partner bids your 3-card suit this may turn out better if partner has 5+ cards and ,maybe the 4-3 is playable.. Also, if your side doesn't win the auction you may find out partners best suit which may turn out to be a better lead if you dont have a clear ;ead -
why dont we have a simple bidding system for gib
steve2005 replied to thomas c's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
When BBO is pushed it pushes back with stats on how it plays 55% (or something high) against humans.BBO is willing to ignore the obvious mistakes GIB makes that a beginner wouldn't make. Because like others have said GIB isn't a high priority to fix and is hard to fix. -
South conceded doesn't that ends play. West doesnt have to give a line of play unless North disputes the concession <edit> but North has to say how they get a trick.

Preempted...again (and again!)
steve2005 replied to apollo1201's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
More like a perfect hand!He needs AKQ hearts and hearts not to split 4-1 He pretty well needs AK which I think they will have and they need A♣ singleton or K♠ or some holdings with a club void The hearts holding is the tricky one and on this sort of bidding a 4-1 break is more than the standard 16% so may need J too. -
You can see why double isn't even allowed here. A clever partner could make an insufficient bid and not make it sufficient barring partner. They instead substitute double ang get a penalty double that cant be pulled which might otherwise be takeout
-
What I see as limitation of 2/1 GF Cant play on 1NT which is often the hardest contract to defend in MP. Could use 1NT semi-forcing to allow 1N as a contract. For invitational hands need to use 1NT forcing which can involve complicated sequences Often hard to show a hand with extras which makes slam bidding problematic. Serious/non-serious 3NT helps with this With misfit and minimum values after a 2/1 GF no way to put brakes on and stop short of game That said the list for SAYC or Standard American would be much longer!
-
Anyone know what the advanced bot would bid in this sequence?
-
Yes! 3♣ Minor Suit Transfer (Promises 6+ diamonds. Opener must bid 3♦) If responder's next bid is 3 of a new suit, he is promising a singleton or void in that suit, but not necessarily slam interest
-
So why did West not find the entry to east's hand to get ruff in 1st example? I mean besides the obvious answer that GIB can't signal.
-
Gib and lycier never saw the danger. On 3♦ somebody will have a singleton. Must draw trump not finesse

A new way to open weak NT in Acol
steve2005 replied to nekthen's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
That is my thinking but some weak NTers suggest they can get away with less.If opener is 2245 or 2254 or maybe some others, they just take a bad board. -
A new way to open weak NT in Acol
steve2005 replied to nekthen's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
SAYC the 1N rebid is 12-14. To suggest a 6 pt range of 12-17 won't create problems is simply uncredable.
