  1. If I was playing with a person and cared, then that would be a massive understatement. However, I felt the hand was worth 9 points with Spades as trump. Also, is it proven that GIB actually bids 2NT in balancing seat with a truly strong balanced hand? Obviously, once I bid 3♠ there was no way. As 2♠ only showed 4, to get the 5th one across I had to bid 3♠. I also was mistakenly under the impression that GIB would have bid 2NT or 3NT if there wasn't a fit, so we "had" a 5-3 fit and I was trying to find the right contract. After all, GIB's 3♣ cuebid showed "at best 1 stop in ♣" so 3NT couldn't have been correct.
  2. I was a tad aggressive with 2♠, but GIB didn't get it's hand across immediately, so I wrongly guessed it had 4♥. 3. I wonder if GIB always shows the Queen with just 1 extra card, or if it's 1 + Jack or 2+ extra cards.
  4. Basic GIB overbid by 2 HCP, and along with my slight overbid, put us into 4NT which on the ♥ lead is only makeable double-dummy. 5. 1.) Does anyone have a good write-up of Multi 2♦, at least a version similar to this? I already have one for weak-only. 2.) Even if partner has the strong hand, I am passing this. And then changing the bid after the game so that it's weak-only and much more pre-emptive/fun!
  6. I agree with this. Partner is showing a great hand, minimum of 9 cards in the minors (probably 6-3 since no 4♦ bid), has no ♥ stop, and probably not 3 spades. Personally, I would also want to make 4♦ Ace-asking for ♦ and 4♥ Ace-asking for ♣, since I think partner's hand is well defined.
  7. Well Hog, unless you have a mini-splinter bid (I assumed you didn't), I think the splinter bid is best. With a 7-card Spade suit (thus promising a 12-card fit) and 3 controls, how isn't this hand worth the GF? Not only that, there is no way we are going to let partner whack it, so show the shortness and then bid on over them bidding.
  8. I would prefer a couple more HCP for 4♣ (splinter), but I think that's best on this hand.
  9. As many, many movies would say: NOOOOO, IT'S A TRAP!
  10. I put some blame on North. That hand is worth 24 points, even at NT (Goren would have upgraded that to 23 for sure). I can't really blame South too much, West was a nutjob and they lucked out in finding a good landing spot.
  11. While I think 6NT is slightly better than 6♠, if WE can play 6♠ I bet it's a better contract than 6NT by partner, to protect those minor suit holdings. While I don't anymore use 3♠ as GF+, setting trump and demanding cuebids (the first one by opener having to promise an Ace), the 2 times it had come up for me in the past it gave me top boards for making slam by right-siding it.
  12. I agree with mikeh almost 100%. 6 controls is basically the top number for 15 HCP, above average for 16 HCP, and average for 17 HCP. Regardless, since 4♣ is so wide-ranging, Opener has to cuebid 4♥ because the hand hasn't lost too much value, and then I expect the slam to be found.
  13. 1♦ - 2♥ (Less than INV, 5+ ♠ & 4+ ♥) 2NT (Asks) - 3♦ (5+ ♥) 4♥
  14. 2% can never be a massive underestimate; I would say 99% because in a few Indy tournaments on BBO I have had a huge hand, X'ed then cuebid their suit, and was passed. I can barely understand if it's Clubs, but can't fathom Diamonds or Hearts (or Spades, but haven't had that happen in an Indy... yet).
  15. It's really close between 1NT and Pass. With anyone other than expert partners, I'll bid 1NT, since they won't ever play me for this point count, and it's only 1 card off. With an expert partner, Pass is the best call. Of course, Raptor 1NT overcall is my preferred choice, but I don't know anyone that would play it.
  16. 4♥ now, though like the others I would have bid a direct 4♥ on the first round. Jacoby then 4♥ should show a slammish hand, and we clearly don't have that. What if partner makes a move with ♠Ax ♥Axx ♦Axxxx ♣Qx, and rightfully so? Likely down in 5, when 4 should be cold.
  17. [hv=sn=chasetb&s=SKTHA4DAKQT7CAK62&wn=Robot&w=S75HK9D865432CT85&nn=Robot&n=SAJ98632H653DJC43&en=Robot&e=SQ4HQJT872D9CQJ97&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=3S%28Preempt%20--%207+%20!S%3B%2010-%20HCP%3B%20!SQ%3B%206+%20total%20points%29P4N%28Blackwood%20%20--%201+%20!S%3B%2026+%20total%20points%29P5D%28One%20or%20four%20key%20cards%20--%207+%20!S%3B%2010-%20HCP%3B%20!SQ%3B%206+%20total%20points%29P5H%28%3F%20queen%20--%201+%20!S%3B%2026+%20total%20points%29P5S%28No%20queen%20-%20S%20trump%20--%207+%20!S%3B%2010-%20HCP%3B%20!SQ%3B%206+%20total%20points%29P6S%28Signoff%20--%201+%20!S%3B%2026+%20total%20points%29PPP&p=D9D7D8DJS8S4SKS5STS7SASQH3H7HAH9DAD6C3H2DKD2C4C9DQD4H5HQDTD5H6C7CAC5SJCJS9HJC6CTS6HTC2C8S2H8H4D3S3CQCKHK]400|300[/hv] EDIT - The hand isn't going in correctly for some reason. Here is the link.
  18. I disagree with most of you! I think 2NT is better than 2♥ as the third best bid -> we have some strength in both, and especially if they attack ♥ we have great stoppers. I also expect 6+ ♥ for 2♥. 2♠ is easily my first choice, and Pass is second. A good rule of thumb here is you should have at least 2 more cards in the second suit than the first in order to pass, or 1 more card if you have 4+ more HCP in that suit. EDIT - I agree that 1NT should only be Semi-Forcing by a Passed Hand.
  19. We show count because that's the agreement. If you wanted suit preference on this hand, then you should have supported the Diamonds. Then, you can show the ♠A, not that I think it's going anywhere. Besides, on this hand, whether standard or UDCA with the Woolsey addition (partner leads top from AK, dummy shows up with Qxx, we use standard signal Trick 1 ONLY), our high Diamond shows both.
  20. The 1♦ bid is fine. However, at least half the time, our ♣Q is worthless, and ♥JT isn't worth squat on offense, so we aren't a King better than a minimum. Not to mention we are VUL -> Pass
  21. I give zeroes to all three bids. If North is planning on bidding a second time (DUH!) then show your suits in the proper order of length, hence Diamonds then Hearts. GIB should NEVER be allowed to pull a 7-level contract. It looked like some robot just wanted to be a hand hog.
  22. Beatrix45 said that North wasn't strong enough to make a direct slam try opposite a limit raise. This is hogwash for two reasons: 1.) While we aren't going to use Jacoby 2NT on this hand, they separate the balanced hands into 3 ranges - minimum (11-14 HCP, 12-15 points) / medium (15-17 HCP, 16-18 points) / maximum (18+ HCP, 19+ points). When you are looking for slam, you do much the same. Minimum hands don't make any noise unless partner insists, medium hands make non-serious slam tries, and maximum hands make serious slam tries. Even a bean counter should count this up as 19+ points. Any hand that has 16-18 points opposite a GF has a mild slam try, 19+ like this hand is SERIOUS about looking for slam, hence SERIOUS 3NT. 2.) Even if South could have had 10-11 HCP, when partner is looking for slam you re-evaluate your hand. If you can remove 3 HCP and 1 control from the hand and still make the same bid, then you are a non-minimum. The fact is, this South has a minimum hand for the 2♣ bid no matter how you look at it. Therefore, South bid it correctly. North didn't even make the right cuebid, assuming that 3♠ was a mild slam try. If you are declarer, you show either 1st or 2nd round controls. By bidding 4♦, North DENIED any Club control, showing something akin to ♣xx(x). Therefore, South 'knows' that they have 2 Club losers, so signs off. 100% blame to North for missing 2 bites of the apple so to speak, and I am surprised that some people (like her) would say otherwise! EDIT - For 12 HCP, 4 controls is the most common; the expected value is 3.72 controls. See Expected Controls in a balanced hand. With 18 HCP, however, 8 controls should be 9%, not 19%
  23. PASS. If partner has a good enough 19 count, (s)he will upgrade. While the tens are nice, we only have one guaranteed entry if partner needs to take any finesses.
  24. The first thought that popped in my mind was the A♣. We can always switch to a Heart if need be.
  25. Wayne, Zel clearly meant that as a joke - he even put in the rolling eyes smiley. I'm very surprised that you didn't know that. To stay on topic, welcome to the forums pgaw. You should give a little more information, like favorite system, time zone, best times to play, etc.
