The issue here is that when you bid 1♥, you promised 5+ CLUBS, so it was setting the contract in your longer suit. The 'correct' bid here is Pass, as ugly as that sounds.

If you have 10-15 HCP and only 0-1 HCP outside your 2 longest suits, then you can easily give extra points. Here, you clearly should give an extra point, giving you enough to open 1♠ (a great suit to boot)! Not to open this hand is losing bridge. FWIW, the Four Aces (1935) would have opened this hand 1♠, and for two years they were the most dominant team, beating Culbertson's team every time.

I can understand the temptation of opening this 2♣, but I don't really see any other bid than 1♣. Our hand is too suit-oriented for 2NT (22-24), and any other bid after 2♣ is asinine. Someone will likely bid after 1♣ (maybe even partner!), and then we can bid and bid some more to show this. If it gets passed out, we are likely in a really good spot, but if not it won't be a disaster.

Well, according to this semi-dated article, the weak only multi 2♦ is actually +EV, but when pared with Tartan Twos (if they actually meant Tartan) was -EV. Han made some valid points here, so I think over my 'Spring' Break I will look at the recent BBs and try to decide. For what it's worth, in a standard system I would play Flannery as outlined by Steve here, more than anything because I detest Weak 2♦. I haven't played with the robots too much lately, and my game is way off today, but I don't understand what went wrong in the bidding. 1.) I'm worried about Hearts, and from the descriptions I thought 3♥ would show that, but also PROMISING ♣ stopped. I had no problems lying about my partial stopper. Gonzalo, at Vul IMPs you break even just making 37% of your games. The South hand has a prime 8 HCP, you have the nice 4-4 fit, and that Heart suit has at least a decent chance of setting up for tricks and discards. It's definitely worth an invite no matter what, but when you are among the best in the world, you just bid it hoping to make, knowing everyone else will be there as well. I don't call it gambling, I look at it as statistics and ability influencing the game.

Honestly, I am surprised by not only the votes for West, but also WHO voted for them. East not only has 12 HCP, but 12 PRIME HCP + SHAPE. Let's make West cuckoo, and give him/her ♠xxxx ♥Kxxx ♦x ♣AQxx . On the same auction (1♦) - X - (P) - ??? , I expect South to have a huge hand, so the King is in the hole, and 6♠ comes home ON 21 HCP!!! Heck, give West any of a bunch of standard minimum takeout doubles, and you have great play or are cold for slam. As is, if East just makes the normal 2♦ cuebid, they SHOULD get to 7♠. The reason I don't blame West is that I would expect something like a pre-emptive sort of hand, maybe a hand with lots of soft values, and definitely denying 2+ Key Cards, for East's 4♠ bid. So, even with that monster of a hand, by my definition you will be off 2 tricks, so no point in West looking for slam. Zel, I have a problem with your example hand. GIB still has a problem of not leading back my suit that I lead, whether directly or later in the hand. I bid 3♠. We have the expected number of controls (7) and HCP (21) . While we have 4-card support (and 3 honors at that), we could easily have matching losers in Diamonds and Clubs unless partner has something. And if partner has anything and makes a move toward slam, I will happily oblige.

Steve, I honestly expect a little better from you. The Mexican 2♦ bid also allows you to stop in 2♠, which has won me a few tops. It also solves the Bridge World Death Hand and gives you a GF raise for cuebidding via 1m - 1M ; 2NT While the Weak 2♦ bid no doubt has its advantages, for some reason I tend to get very bad results using it and playing against it. I blame Lady Luck for that.

By a passed hand, they did only one thing with GIB's defense to NT - they made X as showing both Majors. The problems is the description says 5-5, but it only promises 4-4. I went to a bidding table, where as a passed hand I made every bid from X through 2NT, and GIB responded just as the description said it would. I just wish they would make (1NT) - 2M as promising 5+ instead of just 4+ . At the very least, GIB with ♠Q983 ♥43 ♦942 ♣ A952 should bid 2NT over it, so we can find the 5-4 Club fit instead of the 4-2 Heart fit! Edited after 1eyedjack's post - 2♦ also shows the Majors by a passed hand; the ONLY difference is that they changed X from Penalty to 4-4 Majors.

I think this combines both a flaw and a bug. GIB should not be counting TP when no fit has been established, and I look at it as 3♣ categorically denies 4 hearts, since there is easily room over that to find a possible 4-4 Club fit. I supported the Spades because slam still seemed like a possibility, and I've seen GIB with 6+ in this sequence before. If you have 5♠ - 5♥, you bid Spades-Hearts-Hearts (hearts twice) to show the extra length in the second suit. Spades-Hearts-Spades should show 6-4 at least.

Mike, I agree with you that I would upgrade this to a 18-19 HCP hand and open 1♠, but K&R rates it (with no spots) as 16.9, while DK rates it a good 17. We are allowed to be a max once in awhile. I would open 1♠ no problem, and 2♣ is the easy response. Then, depending on my partner, I could be bidding 2NT, 3NT, 3♣, or even 2♦.
