  1. GIB basic [hv=sn=chasetb&s=S87643HAQ982DQCT9&wn=Robot&w=SA9HJ6DAT73CKQJ75&nn=Robot&n=SK2HKTDKJ965CA432&en=Robot&e=SQJT5H7543D842C86&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=P1N%28notrump%20opener.%20Could%20have%205M.%20--%202-5%20!C%3B%202-5%20!D%3B%202-5%20!H%3B%202-5%20!S%3B%2015-17%20HCP%3B%2018-%20total%20points%29PP2D%28Cappelletti%20-%20majors%20--%205+%20!H%3B%205+%20!S%3B%2011%29P3D%284+%20!D%3B%202-%20!H%3B%202-%20!S%3B%2014-20%20total%20points%29P3N%285-6%20!H%3B%205-6%20!S%3B%2011-%20HCP%3B%2011-12%20total%20poi%29P4H%284+%20!D%3B%202%20!H%3B%202-%20!S%3B%2013+%20HCP%3B%2014-20%20total%20points%29PPP&p=H3H9HJHKD6D2DQDACKCAC6C9DKD4CTD3DJD8S3D7HTH4H2H6D9C8HADTHQCQC3H7H8S9C4H5S8SAS2S5CJC2SQS6C7D5SJS7C5SKSTS4]400|300[/hv] I don't think GIB should be bidding 3♦ here on anything less than 6♦ and 14+ HCP (the same goes for 3♣), since a large majority of the time I will be lucky to have 2. I also wonder what 2NT would mean over 2♦ and how well that bid works out.
  2. Technically 5431 hands are 3-suited (though not all directors know this), so as long as the 4-4 Majors are 44(41) or 44(50), and the Flannery is 45(31) or 45(40), then I can guarantee that it is GCC-legal. It's tougher if you try to include 4522 hands, since it seems they worded it in a way that 2♦ as both 3-suiters and 9+ cards in the Majors isn't GCC-legal. And there's no way you can include 44(32) hands into your 2♦ opening, regardless of the above.
  3. 1.) You should NOT have bid. Most people play that (1♣) - 2NT shows ♥ + ♦; a small minority still play it as ♣ + ♦. You had neither of these hands, and so should Pass. 2.) Partner is 100% to blame for 6♠. If you are showing ♥ + ♦, you could still be off A♥ and A♦, so no jumping to any slam. With a pick-up partner, I cannot tell you what to bid, but as North I would have bid 3♠ (forcing) followed by 4♥.
  4. Your hand is ♠Jx ♥KQJxx ♦Ax ♣KJ98. What would you open? If it matters, use Precision as the system and MP scoring, but EVERYONE'S opinion is important to me. I also ask that if you do choose 1♥, that you still browse the 1NT opening, because I have a few questions under it I would like answered. A couple of the bidding options aren't completed, because I'm working on them and adding them to my future system(s). Thanks to everyone who participates!!! Partner is a great player and bidder. You are playing 1NT as 15-17, it can include a 5-card Major and be 5M-4m shape, but it doesn't happen too often. I'll show all 4 hands in 1-3 days, depending on interest garnered. Let's see if we can't get this on top of BBO News! Let's say you opened 1♥. Or maybe because it's MPs, you open 1NT.
  5. I concur that 2♦ as Multi is a Mid-Chart item. I also think the 2M openings are also NOT GCC-legal. You are promising two suits, but only show one of them, and the second suit is 4 or more, not only 4. While that is very picky, read Paul Gipson's comment on his response from Mike Flader at BridgeWinners. If you promised 6+ or 5+ with a minor suit, then it becomes legal. EDIT (After mycroft's post) - I forgot to mention I strongly think that 2M showing 10-15, 5+ and a 4+ card second suit should be GCC-legal.
  6. North, for not having the guts to pass the double. While the South hand is nice, I can't see bidding 3NT on Aces and spaces. If partner can't show me a good hand after X , I don't want to be in game either.
  7. Earl, you have said in two posts that +800 isn't a good score compared to game, which is likely +600/620 unless you are playing some crazy scoring method? I generally agree with you that there aren't hands between a Weak 2 and opening 1M, EXCEPT when it come to 2nd hand pre-empts (especially VUL). Suit quality is a big factor, because you can easily end up in a 6-1 or 6-0 (GASP!) when you had a better fit. Zel, I disagree with you because I bet Robson/Segal would say that this is penalty 100% of the time. Look at page 117 when talking about pre-empts. For those that don't want to download/read Partnership Bidding at Bridge : c) Second-in-hand: 1-3. (my note to the forum posters - on an aggression scale of 1-10) This is not the time to pressure-bid, as we saw in the section "The right time to strike". Take the vulnerability into account a little, but generally keep your pre-empts within a fairly narrow range. Partner will often have a good hand and will need to know what you've got - either in order to bid constructively; or to double the opponents, particularly if they protect ... So I look at the auction as they opened, partner shows his or her hand with a flawed but now worthy Weak 2, and then opener PROTECTS on his or her own. Our X says that we are cracking the whip, no doubt in my mind.
  8. Yes Trindad, just like how he thinks President Obama is God, all Democrats are pure and good, and all Republicans are greedy and evil. That's why the USA is in a mess, the people don't know enough to vote out the idiots in office, and those that would serve the country best won't run or can't afford to run for office. By the way, I don't believe the President should be impeached, because Joe Biden is far worse than Dick Cheney (not that Cheney was worth anything). Then on down the line, John Boehner is next and might be the best, but that's like saying "I'd rather have herpes than AIDS". Patrick Leahy and John Kerry are after Boehner **shudders violently at that horrific thought**
  9. That hand belongs in Bridge Hell, that's awful to bid a very nice slam that goes off.
  10. I use 2NT opening as a good 22-24 and 1♣ - 1♦ - 2NT as 20- bad 22 for slam reasons. I don't like the 1♥ relay when it isn't natural. If I was really worried about that Spade stopper, I would have downgraded my 22 to 21 and tried 1♣ - 1♦ - 2♣. The only time I would be really worried is if I had a semi-solid Club suit like KQJxx or AQJxx. Otherwise, I bid 2NT - 3NT. I would expect the room to be in 3NT and most going down, c'est la vie. P.S. What was your hand, or at least your Club holding?
  11. There are three ways to handle this: 1.) If you double 1♦ and then bid 2♦ or 3 ♦, that it shows a real diamond suit. 2.) Bidding 2♦ directly shows 5+ and an overcalling hand. With a Michaels hand, X and then bid 2♦. 3.) Forget the fact that 1♦ might 'only be 2' and play what you normally do! According to Jan Eric Larsson (creator of the Tangerine Club), only 10% of the time will 1♦ have 2 and only 19% of the time will it be on 3. Therefore, 71% of the time it will be on 4+. In my established partnerships, I play #2 because we have discussed all the possibilities and so shouldn't have any mistakes With any pick-up partner, I play #3. We will be better off than the room because we won't make a mistake worrying about Diamonds.
  12. I bid 'Other', but I HAD TO -> bidding 3NT directly wasn't on the list. I have a gut feeling partner is packing lots of heat in Spades, and that 3NT is better off than 4♥ because our Hearts are too solid.
  13. This hand isn't easy to bid, especially when you use 1♥ as 19+ . We need to confirm the Heart fit, and be able to get some discards by East, so ♣Kx would be enough even if 4432. My auction would start out similar to awm's: 1♣ - 1♦ 1♥ (Nat, mb only 4) - 2♥ (0-5 HCP, usually 4+ , must have shortness if 0-3 HCP) 2♥ denies 4+ Spades in principle (definitely 5+), but I might bid 2♥ with 5432 QJx x Jxxxx . Now I don't know whether to show my shortness in Diamonds or show a huge Heart-Club two-suiter. I think I should want to show the very nice second suit, since I need that King.
  14. I know this is the Bridge World Death Hand, but once I show 6+ ♥ GIB should then re-evaluate and cue-bid us to slam. I misplayed the hand horribly, but I still want to be there. [hv=sn=chasetb&s=SA3HK98654D86CKQ8&wn=Robot&w=SJT752HDJ5CJT6532&nn=Robot&n=SQHAQTDAQ97432CA9&en=Robot&e=SK9864HJ732DKTC74&d=n&v=n&b=21&a=1D%28Minor%20suit%20opening%20--%203+%20!D%3B%2011-21%20HCP%3B%2012-22%20total%20points%29P1H%28One%20over%20one%20--%204+%20!H%3B%206+%20total%20points%29P3D%28Opener%20rebid%20--%206+%20!D%3B%203-%20!H%3B%203-%20!S%3B%2017-20%20total%20points%29P3H%285+%20!H%3B%207+%20HCP%3B%208+%20total%20points%3B%20forcing%29P4H%286+%20!D%3B%202-3%20!H%3B%203-%20!S%3B%2017-20%20total%20points%29PPP&p=CJCAC7C8HQH3H4S2SQSKSAS5S3S7HAS9HTH7H5C2C9C4CQCTHKC6D2H2H6D5D3HJS8H8SJD4D8DJDQDKS6H9STD7CKC5D9DTD6C3DAS4]400|300[/hv]
  15. That is hilarious, and sad at the same time. I just hope the guy is hydrated and warmed up his vocal cords before reading off those 4000+ names (and with 24 days to go, who knows how many more people will sign up!). The best part is, I live close enough that I am tempted to give just so I can go chill out at this dining hall and eat me some potato salad! EDIT - I have never been on Kickstarter before, it's actually a very interesting website.
  16. A.) Sorry Mike, but count me too as one of the people who upgrade into 1NT. We have a good 5-card suit, and I want to avoid the cheap 1♠ or even 1NT overcall. B.) Having opened 1♦, we now have to pass (my vote in the poll). Unless partner has something like QJxxx or QTxxx, we'll likely have too many points in a Spade suit that we know will break badly, and either Clubs or Hearts will be wide open. I see +120 coming our way.
  17. It's ridiculous that GIB bids that way, but at least we now have an idea of what it actually has, based off of these two hands. When the auction goes (1m) - X - 2m ; 3m - 4om, 4om is a transfer to Hearts.
  18. Now I wish I could change the title to 4 ridiculous auctions. On the first one, GIB should be supporting a 5-card suit, NOT rebidding a crappy Heart suit. Also, GIB should leave 3NT alone, since 3NT denies 3+ ♥ and the jump-shift denies 4+ ♠ (not great on this hand, but on a slightly different hand). I bet 4♠ in the auction 1m - 1♠; 2NT - 4♠ is also stupidly unlimited. While 4♥ would also go down, it goes down 1 less trick, and in almost any other layout 4♥ makes while 5♥ is likely down. As it stands, 3NT is the best contract, but if I can't find out about the stopper(s) like I was trying to, then we can never play it!
  20. While I don't live anywhere close to LA (sorry mate), I am interested in playing some sort of Precision, and I do have grand ambitions.
  21. 1.) Yes, I bet it was Mitch Dunitz. I know MeckWell play it, as do most top partnerships. 2.) I have a limited experience with it (no willing partners), but it beats the pants off of standard in a regular partnership. Just be sure to talk about it and make sure you know what happens after the the transfer and acceptance or lack thereof. In particular, how strong can 1M - (X) - 2M-1 be? 3.) I have heard that it is GCC from several national TDs, so I take their word. On the ACBL Convention Chart, what I think covers it is either #2 or #5 under Competitive. Under #2, it says Conventional Doubles and Redoubles (technically, a takeout double is a convention) and all responses thereto. Based on this one, either side can use it after 1♠ - X . #5 allows Transfer Advances after an opening bid and an overcall by either side, like 1♠ - 2♣ . 4.) I have two links for you. The first link goes to a complex Precision Club system written up by Oliver Clark. What you want is called MOTOR, and it's on page 16. That page alone directly covers your questions. For using it in competition, Marc Smith wrote this great article on Transfer Advances. Basically, you can use the same exact methods even if your side is the one interfering. Jeff Rubens came up with the original idea, so some people call them Rubens Advances.
  22. Personally, I would open the North hand 1♥, because the hand is primed for a suit contract between the Aces and Kings, and the worthless doubleton. I'll overbid with it slightly. However, I don't mind it being opened 1NT, it does get across the HCP (for bean counters only) and the relative shape. To show how obsessed with Hearts GIB is, I was goofing off in Just Play Bridge on BBO and had the hand below. I didn't make the 3♥ bid, but that is what the bid promised. [hv=pc=n&s=sat75h64dakj97ck2&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1np2h(Jacoby%20transfer)p3h(5%21H%2C%202-3%20%21S%2C%2017%20HCP%2C%2018%20points)]133|200[/hv]
  23. Last time I checked John, a 4-3 fit is usually better than a 5-1 fit, and GIB would have still bid the same way with ♠AKQ and ♥Axxxx
  24. I bid aggressively, I admit, but unless the suit is AKQJ8, AKQJ9, AKQJT, or AKQT9, why the heck is it not passing 3NT??? [hv=sn=chasetb&s=S9742H9DQ9CAQ9764&wn=Robot&w=SQJ53HJ6DAK863C82&nn=Robot&n=SA86HAKQT2D75CKT5&en=Robot&e=SKTH87543DJT42CJ3&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=P1N%28notrump%20opener.%20Could%20have%205M.%20--%202-5%20!C%3B%202-5%20!D%3B%202-5%20!H%3B%202-5%20!S%3B%2015-17%20HCP%3B%2018-%20total%20points%29P2C%28Stayman%20--%29P2H%282-5%20!C%3B%202-5%20!D%3B%204-5%20!H%3B%202-4%20!S%3B%2015-17%20HCP%3B%2018-%20total%20points%29P3N%283-%20!H%3B%204%20!S%3B%2010-15%20HCP%29P4H%282-5%20!C%3B%202-5%20!D%3B%205-%20!H%3B%202-4%20!S%3B%2015-17%20HCP%3B%20rebiddable%20!H%3B%2018-%20total%20points%3B%20two%20stops%20in%20!H%29P4S%283-%20!H%3B%204-%20!S%3B%2010-15%20HCP%3B%20biddable%20!S%29PPP&p=DKD5D2D9DAD7D4DQD8S6DJC4SASTS2S3S8SKS4S5DTS7D6H2H9H6HQH7HKH8C6HJHAH4C7SQSJC5H5S9D3HTC3C9C8CKCJCQCTH3CAC2]400|300[/hv]
  25. Yes, I would bid 1♥ if I was at a normal game and not testing out GIB. Just like the hand below (I would open 1♠ at the club): [hv=sn=chasetb&s=SAJ832H9D8752CKQ4&wn=Robot&w=SHA8762DAK4CA9875&nn=Robot&n=SKT9764HQT3D9CJ62&en=Robot&e=SQ5HKJ54DQJT63CT3&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=2S%28Weak%20two%20bid%20--%206+%20!S%3B%2010-%20HCP%3B%209+%20total%293S%28Two%20suited%20-%20other%20major%20and%20minor%20--%205+%20!H%3B%2018+%20total%20points%3B%20forcing%294S%28The%20Law%3A%2010%20trump%20-%3E%20game%20support%20--%202+%20!S%295H%283+%20!H%29PPP&p=CKC5C2C3H9H6HQHKH5S2HAHTH2H3H4S3CTCQCAC6C9CJHJC4S5S8H8STD4D9DQD2SQSAH7S9DAS6D3D5DKS7D6D7C8S4DTSJC7SKDJD8]400|300[/hv] Now with GIB 'knowing' we have a 12-card fit, why the heck isn't it bidding on, especially with shortness and unlikely mirrored distribution?
