I don't necessarily expect GIB to take the finesse for 3NT+4, but it could at least CASH OUT FOR +2! IF GIB is going to force to game, it should bid its longest suit first. If not, then the correct bid is 2NT, NOT 3♦. It got cutoff, but I ended up %20--%203%20!S%3B%2015%20HCP%3B%20twice%20reb%29P5H%28Two%20or%20five%20key%20cards%3B%20no%20queen%20--%201+%20!H%3B%204+%20!S%3B%20biddable%20!D%3B%2013-18%20total%20points%29P6H%283%20!S%3B%2015%20HCP%3B%20twice%20rebiddable%20!H%3B%2016%20to%29PPP&p=C5C3C9CKD9D2DJDKCJCAC7C4HQH4H6HAS3SQSKSAC6C2H2CQHKH3S4H7D7DTDQD8DAD6S6D4D5H5H8HJS9S5SJS8S2H9STS7HTC8D3CT"]6♥-3. I can see a 1♥ opening on this hand if you can expect it to be that light. However, this hand easily fits into a 2♥ opening, and that's what I choose.
-
1.) I think 3♣ is clear - we are NV, both opponents are unpassed hands, and our partner should expect a wide range (i.e. this is at the really bad end). 2.) At these colors, IF I had a 2♦ available, I would flip a coin. Heads I would pass, Tails I would bid 2♦. Luckily I don't, so a clear pass for me. 3♦ looks suicidal.
-
The only time I would bid 4♦ with that is playing my fantasy system, where the 4♦ and 5♦ opening bids are swapped. Otherwise, I would bid 5♦, since we have no real defense to either Major.

I don't know how to evaluate the hand using the 4 C's method, but I have the document showing how Danny Kleinman would evaluate it, with his steps: 1.) 13 + 9(2) + 5(2) = 41 (or a good 13, since 41/13 = 13 R2) 2.) +1 for KQx(x) combination 3.) +2 for AKT (the 10 gets a point each for the Ace and King) 4.) -2 points for 4333 shape Now add up the adjustments and divide everything by 3. So we get 42/3, or a 'bad' 14 HCP. I am guessing that they added an extra point because the Ten (assuming it's a 'picture card', otherwise the King?) is accompanied by the Ace. Oddly enough, AKJ is the same as AKT in Kleinman's view. The Jack is worth 2, but this nullifies the +2 for the Ten accompanied by the AK. Also, you lose a point for a suit whose lowest card > 10 , but since the Jack has a King or Ace with it, it gains back that point. In KnR, the Jack replacing the Ten adds 0.25, making the hand worth 13.75 to them. Maybe we need to make one small change - if the suit is exactly HH10, that suit loses a point?

Initially I voted (a close) No, but I have changed my vote to a Yes, for three reasons. One, it makes rebidding easier over 1♣ - 1♠. I feel that I'll choose the wrong thing to do between raising on 3 and rebidding 1NT with a Max and partner passing with many hands that have great play for game. Two, I am eating up space so the opponents can't make a cheap overcall to find a good contract or lead not otherwise found. Three, if we have the values for 3NT but no Major suit fit, I want to guard the ♠Qxx because I expect a Spade lead. Only a true hand hog or a person looking for a swing might try 1NT on your second hand. It has nothing to redeem it, and I agree with Mike that it's only worth 13.

Why would the simulations be different? West should always be looking for 6♥, and bidding it once 2 KC + Q♥ is shown. Partner has a Good 5-5
chasetb replied to kgr's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I agree that Double should be penalty. I want to look for slam, but I am concerned that we are off two losers. I might just bid 5♥, with the possibility that we can stop in 5♠ if we are off two Heart losers - partner hopefully won't blow past 6♣ if there is in fact a stopper. -
A Heart is probably best, but because I much prefer black suits over red, I would lead a Spade before a Heart. I would also lead a Club before a Diamond, only because of my preference for black suits. Nigel's scoring looks accurate to be honest.

If Only the Jack Was The Queen!
chasetb replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I love how a few people said the West hand is suspect for 1♥, though I know Goren would have opened that hand. I know, let's add the Q♦ so it has 13 HCP, enough for anybody to open! Oh wait, that hand can't make 7... I know, let's add the K♣!! No wait, still not good enough, so I'll add the J♣!!! Unfortunately, I then am only slightly better than a 50/50 chance, which STILL isn't good enough for bidding 7... Eagles, your hand was very good, but you need to be able to count to 13 tricks before you bid that grand (70% minimum). You needed to find out if partner had the Q♠, the K♦, or the KQ♣, any of which is golden for +2210. I can tell you that I don't personally know of anybody who could find out that information. On top of that, most people short of experts never even THINK of bidding 7, so in borderline situations go low and make your 6 for a good result. As your situation illustrates, most of the field didn't even get to 6, because they couldn't even find out about partner's shortness and 2 KC, or just couldn't picture how to make 12 tricks. -
Double is definitely takeout, and I would pass here. I would also pass partner's Double because my ODR is so low. EDIT - Since partner bid 4♥ however, I am in a bind. I will take the low road by passing and collecting the game bonus. I have a bad feeling that if I bid 6, it goes Club ruff, ♥Ace for -1.

Does anyone have a link to Bridge2Symmetric
chasetb replied to Cthulhu D's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
It is times like this that I am so relieved that the Internet Archive Wayback Machine was created. Yes, you can still download a copy of Bridge2Symmetric, but it won't work without the license, which you have to buy: Bridge2Symmetric home page Download Bridge2Symmetric -
You should have just bid 6♠, hoping that partner had the nuts.
-
I am assuming that 1♦ is (3)4+ , so unlikely we will ever want to play in that suit. Therefore: 2♦ = Usually big hand with support, probably a fit with Clubs but could be a big NT hand without a Diamond stopper. 2♥ = Larger than average with Hearts, probably 6+ . After all, we can just bid 2♥ naturally on the first round. 2♠ = Pretty big hand with Spades. While borderline, I have an example hand of X then a Major below. I would also say that 2♥ and 2♠ should be limited to less than an opening Strong 2♣ (With HCP, IF it ever comes up), which you can do via 2♦ and then bidding the Major naturally. While not the most likely, a hand from a tournament awhile ago convinced me that I needed the Major as natural. Hearts play better than NT, and it's very likely if you bid 2NT instead of 2♥, partner will raise to 3, going down 1: [hv=pc=n&s=skqth4dt653cjt764&w=s874ht7532d2ckq83&n=saj9hakj986dkj4c2&e=s6532hqdaq987ca95&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=1dp1hdp2cp2hppp]400|300[/hv]

This clearly fits under a 2♥ opener, but I would open it 3♥ because of seat and vulnerability. I'm pretty sure GIB bids 4♥ with these kind of hands.
-
Definitely a pass with BBO randoms. With any very good player, I expect it to be takeout, but left in 95%+ of the time. With our hand, I would expect a double fit, but with no intermediate honors, the trump suit likely stacked against us (if I get to the right/longest suit), and two bullets, I am happy to sit for it. Give me a 6-4-3 hand, and that makes it more difficult.

Vampyr, I can't play Multi (stupid Mid-Chart and no partners who are willing to play MC), and I think it's clearly a 2♠ in both systems. It has 3/top 5 in Spades, a maximum in point count, and not really too much defense.
-
The 20+ description is awful, but for a change this hand actually applies by my count - 15 HCP + 3 (or more) points for running Club suit + 4 dummy points (4 trump with a void).
-
Unless 1NT promises a stopper, it is probably the best bid. I can see 2♣ working as well - just hide a Spade in with the Clubs. 2♦ seems silly on this 5-card suit.
-
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left?

I needed a swing in an indy, so I jumped straight to game (in the wrong suit as it could have turned out). Does GIB really use Forcing Passes, and regardless why didn't it crack 5♠? 1.) I know GIB is in the balancing seat, but I would much rather a 2♣ bid than 1NT. 2.) After RHO GIB rebid the Hearts, anything other than Pass shows 13+ points and essentially forces to game. Why is GIB jumping to game with a completely balanced hand? And why can't it bid 4♣ as Choice of Games?
