an argument can be made for pass, 2♠, or 2NT. Remembering the adage that "TOX are for taking out" I would go with 2NT over 2♠

Good advice. But then, just tell them to automatically duck unless they already know the reason why they must play ace (setting trick, or get in to return partner's suit or some such valid reason). Agree. The rule I go by is: duck promptly, unless I have a specific reason to go up that I can clearly explain after the hand ;) Chant after me (it is a mantra after all ;) ) "Second hand low and don't be slow" I agree with your reasoning for when to snatch an ace. Players should be ready when declarer leads any suit in which you hold an ace and are in second seat. This is the essence of planning the hand.

Do you ever think of using stayman with a 52xy hand? Or do you think the transfer is automatic? IMO it is not!! I will use stayman with a 5 card major suit with what is IMO the right hand. I will have to remember this "tactical bid" and use it for an appropriate but rare hand ;)

since you are a passed hand I think this (2NT) is the most descriptive call otherwise I would go for 3♣

I have that one in my hands but I'm reading The No Trump Zone, The Catcher in the Rye & 1965-1969 Nebula Award winners (Short stories and Novellas).
